Oh, if we're including days off, I think I might have you all beat Start Sept 6th Sept: 2 early dismissals Oct: 3 early dismissals Nov: 2 early dismissals, 2 full days Dec: 2 early dismissals, 6 full days Jan: 1 early dismissal, 2 full days Feb: 2 early dismissals, 1 full day Mar: 3 early dismissals Apr: 1 early dismissal, 6 full days May: 2 early dismissals, 1 full June: 3 early dismissals Last day is June 9th. That's 18 full days (Christmas, Thanksgiving, Spring Break, MLK Day, Presidents Day, Good Friday, Memorial Day) and 21 early/half days. Honestly I wish we'd go to year around, give the kids a couple weeks a few times a year and get rid of this on again, off again, crap. We get almost a full 12 weeks in the summer, but that's too long, the kids are bored and getting into trouble. And I thought we had it bad! That's insane. I guess I would rather plan to have my kid home for the whole day than all those half days. That would drive me nuts. If you double up the half days and look at it in terms total days out, it's 1.5 days more than us (we're out 27 full days).

We have a 2pm instead of 3.15/3.30 dismisal every Wed., 4 noon releases, 10 teacher work days/PD days. Plus holidays and breaks! They have 10 TWD before and after school starts.
I know when I taught, 20 years ago we had the same number of work days/PD days. It felt like too many.
The thing that I hate is this year they are all on Wednesdays. Last year we were able to book all our weekends away on Noon release or TWD as they were all on Friday or Monday.
I hate the calendar this year.

1/2 day on the 2nd Weds of every month (I think Dec or Jan are exceptions), but we get the Friday of conference week off (so 2 per year). The school calendar is a huge point of contention every year. They used to do the teacher inservices (the 1/2 days) on random days during the year. Now at least we can plan consistently. And our elementary/middle school calendar doesn't always align with the HS (a different district).

Our high school has more half days than the elementary 7 middle schools do. The elem. & mid. have the same number, which, not including weather related half days or early dismissals, is typically around 8 per year. That's the last day of school, the 3 days preceding Thanksgiving, Winter, & Spring break, and a few days for conferences.

I teach at a k-8 school. Every Wednesday is early release, we have a week of conferences as early release, there are 2 days in February for conferences also.

We have either one or two. I can't remember if the last school day before Christmas is a half day. The last day of the school year definitely is. Our half days get out at 10:30 or 11 - insanely early.

Not a single one thank goodness!! That would make it very difficult for working parents.
What is the reason for half days? It doesn't make sense to me.
ETA: I just remembered, on the last day of the year they finish at 2:30pm instead of 3:30pm.

None. But don't even get me started on how many WHOLE days off they have during the school year! School starts on Aug. 29. Sept: 1 day off Oct: 4 days off Nov: 3 days Dec: 6 days Jan: 3 days Feb: 1 day Mar: 6 days Apr: 1 day May: 2 days Last day of school is June 1. Yep, that's right, they have whole days off EVERY.SINGLE.MONTH. I don't think they go more than 3 weeks without one or more days off. Two of my kids have 15 total whole days off. My daughter has 15 whole days off, early release *every* Friday, and 4 other early release days! No wonder she started a week earlier!

My kids' school is grade 7 to 12 and they have zero half days. Once a month, they get out 35 minutes early for staff meeting.

Half days can still count as full days (if they are late enough-feed lunch to the kids) so each school district doesn't go below the required number of days per year the kids are in school. We go by hours, and late starts still count as full days (for snow) so the year doesn't have to be extend. I do feel sorry for working parents.

Elementary and middle school is 8:00-3:00 M-F
High school gets wonky: M - 7:55-3:11 T - 7:55-3:11 W - 7:55-1:58 considered half day T - 7:55-2:35 F - 7:55-3:11
I don't think any of our schools goes 3 weeks without a day off. 27 days off this school year from August 10th - May 25th. The kids are very happy with this!

The only early dismissal days our kids get are exam days at the secondary level. They get out at 12:30, usually the last 2 or 3 days of the semester. Elementary gets no early release days.
My senior gets out at 12:30 every day this year - this is going to be a problem . . .

despise early dismissal!!! Just take a full day off at least. What a pain to find someone to help with children for a half day! At least we could plan something fun like the zoo if it was a whole day!

The school my son works at has no half days. They tried having half days but they are a charter school and so many kids come from areas that are not close by that they had such low attendance on their half days they didn't meet the criteria to count it as a school day.

We have six early dismissal days (half days) - one per six weeks.
And 23 days off counting Christmas break (10 days) and Spring Break (5 days).
Our district switched to instructional minutes this year as opposed to instructional days.

We have two early dismissal days - one the last day before winter break and the last day of school is a 1/2 day. That's it. When we lived in California the kids got a half day every Wednesday and I hated it. Seemed like such a waste. Maybe there is some benefit that I couldn't see.

I think it won't change the number of days families go away.. it just means they will miss school, where in the past they could arrange family events around the school schedule, and for younger kids the families now have 10 Wednesdays to either take off or arrange child care. Which for a lot of people is their entire vacation. It is a smallish charter school so there is not likely to be options. The reasoning was that the teachers would be more productive if they were on Wed. rather than Friday. I hope so, the previous schedule was pro-families. Time will tell.

I think the half days are bad, but we needed the kids in school those half days regardless what day it was. I don't know why parents chose not to bring them in on Fridays, but would bring them in on Wednesdays. Two weeks of missing reading lessons was a big deal in our district. They also found that half days on Fridays meant that teachers would take that time off too. Personally, I think the 1/2 days should be combined and turned into full days at the beginning or end of a quarter (or semester). We have a high percentage of parents who are military and had to have daycare taken care of at the beginning of the year. Our school also has before and after care. It isn't cheap though.

Total is 6 half days and 32 full days off.
Aug: 2 half days (29th and 30th) Sept: 2 full days off; 1 half day off Oct: 1 full day off; 1 half day off Nov: 5 full days off Dec: 10 full days off Jan: 2 full days off Feb: 2 full days off Mar: 1 full day off Apr: 7 full days off May: 2 full days off; 1 half day off June: 1 half day off (last day June 9th)
I'm not sure what we are doing for care for a lot of that time. We don't have that much vacation.
