I looked at dd's other classes, her two honors classes weigh tests at 80%. Her math is not honors, it's general 6th grade math, they don't even have honors math for 6th graders. Her teacher does not have a webpage, I can't find anywhere in writing that explains the 90% thing or the school grading policy. At back to school night I thought it was stated in a slideshow that all the math teachers presented together that 70% of the grade was from tests but it was one slide in a whirlwind 10 minute presentations and it didn't click with me what that meant.
DD already claims to hate math, if this is really how to the school does things, we are in for a long 3 years or I'm going to have to start researching tutors and homeschooling.

If 90% of your grade comes from tests there should be more than 1 test! That's ridiculous. There will be more tests. I have had classes where only tests counted and the entire grade was dependent on a large paper. So, it happens. It is a rough lesson to learn. However, better now than later. I assumed that this is the end of the marking period and there would be no more tests. I have had classes like that also, but not in middle school. I still think it's ridiculous.

Many schools are going to a scale of weighting tests and assessments at a higher percentage over daily work. That said please have your child check with the teacher if this is correct with her class. Sometimes the numbers entered into the system are incorrect by accident. My kids have had that happen. The teachers we have had are always great about explaining the system and or fixing it if there is a mistake. Jr. High school students are capable of being there own advocate IMO.

I don't really like how DD's grades are calculated. Tests count too much, though not 90%. What gets me is that a couple of times she has had an overall grade of, let's say 90. Then, she gets a 95 on a quiz. That 95 drops her formative grade by a point or two, which drops her overall to an 89. Confused the heck out of me the first time it happened.
