I know I said I was giving up politics and the news between now and the election, and mostly I have. But every once in awhile I get sucked into some stupidity like this one. This woman on FB, who I don't know because she's just added for that evil Family Farm , posts something about how we have to elect Trump because Hillary will "change the constitution and take away our rights". I couldn't help it and I said "you do know that the president can't just change the constitution all on his/her own?" She replied back "yes, Hillary will do away with the 2nd amendment". I said "She can't! Presidents can't just change parts of the constitution all on their own. No one person can." She replied back: "Yes! Hillary will! That's why we need Trump!" I know, I know.... do not engage. Do not get involved. It's pointless because these people will not listen, will not go do some reading to find out things like how the constitution can be amended, will not engage in any truthful intellectual pursuit. ugh. I have a pint of Talenti gelato in the freezer, I think I'll go eat it. I have to eat it up before my dh gets back tomorrow because I don't want him to have any.

It's hard not to get sucked in. I had to hide my Wyoming relatives until after the election.

It is utterly pointless to engage with people like that. If they had the ability to reason and think for themselves, they wouldn't be listening to that kind of stuff in the first place.

I hear you, I have engaged a couple of times and I know I shouldn't have but some people make such nonsensical statements that it's hard to keep quiet!

I would post an article about how the constitution can't just be changed and try to leave it at that. At least then I can feel like I am trying to educate rather than just argue. Probably doesn't work well since they won't read it, but some people will.

I see it from both sides and I just hide those posts. It's amazing what each side will believe or say about the other.

I don't want to hide the person, but I have done the "hide posts from 'insert name of idiot douchebag website here'" thing about eleven billion times in the past 3 months. I should have hidden the entire interwebs by now!! One person I know posted 17 in a row from different idiot sites the other day. I did hide that person, no loss there.

What I hate is the people that posted that stupid meme about women liking 50 shades of gray so obviously we like having our vaginas grabbed. That crossed the line for me. I tried to reason with my bil but it didn't do any good. If you want my respect, don't defend rape culture.

I have hidden more posts in the past few weeks than I can ever recall doing previously. I look at it as a public service so I don't start arguments with friends and family. In fact I have hidden one niece's entire family from view. They are ultra conservative and even the most mundane of comments on any of their posts is met with fury, so I have hidden them away. My lily white great niece is convinced she is racially discriminated against. My niece's husband is a birther and my niece just goes crazy if I dare post anything in response to his racist, sexist posts. I may just leave them there for all eternity. It's easier than continually reminding myself to not comment on their posts.

Ugh, I can relate. It's so hard to not engage when people post every conspiracy they can find. My coworker does this and believes it all. Anything I post to debunk the lie is is dismissed as a lie. I don't understand that mindset at all.

I think many people watch Fox as their primary news resource and get hella bad information from them. I make sure that I try to watch election information from multiple sources. I try to hear it all. I believe about 1/5 of each source. I swear watching Fox is like getting your information from The Onion.

I had hid and unfollowed so many people in the last 4 months. Not so much for politics but for stupidity. I got to the place of what's the point so I deactivated a few days ago. I would like to stay away for a few months and then narrow my list to less than 20 people. But I do love the private groups on FB. I will miss that part

I will miss that part I deactiveated mine a couple months ago, told everyone I'd be back Nov 9th. I had previously gone from around 250 "friends" to about 40 closer friends only and family, but I think when I get back on I will even get rid of family that annoys me too much, or ones I'm not close enough to care about what they are doing. I want facebook to be a fun way to keep up with what people I actually care about and would want to see in person again. I realized this year that there was to much drama involved with past coworkers, old schoolmates, acquaintances, etc (basically people I really didn't give a shit about, but felt obligated to have on there). I went through the list and figured if I saw them across the street and wouldn't make the effort to cross the street to talk to them, I probably didn't care enough to stay involved, even if it was just online. It was freeing!

Sadly, there is a tremendous amount of fear out there on both sides, during this election.
The other day I was in a store and I heard an elderly black woman telling a store clerk that she heard Trump will bring back slavery. This was a genuine fear on her part, and I felt such sympathy that she would even have to think about such a thing. It is the same thing for the other side, who fear Clinton will allow a floodgate of terrorists into the U.S.
I have hidden posts on Facebook so that I won't get involved in it. But I will admit there are times I'm tempted to say, "Come ON. You can't really believe that?!"

I am always surprised at how little people know about our governmental processes. We had a thread here recently where we talked about civics classes (or what would be called civics now) and it is being taught in school, so in theory, people should already know that the president on his/her own can not just change the constitution on a whim. In fact, the process required to amend the constitution is actually IN the constitution. I would think that people who are concerned about someone messing around with the system should have at least a working knowledge of that system. Instead of engaging, maybe you can start posting this link ad nausem and save yourself the headache. This is how the amendment process works, and notice the president has nothing to do with the process at all

How sad, that I knew where they vacationed and what their kid wore for homecoming but didn't even speak to them. I am making my circle smaller in real life also.

I sit on my hands a lot. Last night I found myself arguing with a Trump supporter in person. He said that McCain was not a war hero because he was a bad pilot that allowed himself to be shot down SaveSave. I, a lifelong Democrat, found myself defending a litany of Republicans. Truly, I was shocked at the lack of respect and just plain deranged arguments. How could somebody say that about a man who served his country?

I will be so glad to have this election over with. I have had to unfollow a couple of my friends (and after tonight perhaps a couple more) until after the election. Although I am not sure that it will be any better after the election.

a perfect meme for this logic. What does it say about the political party that continually uses demonizing, shaming and ridicule in an attempt to sway or even silence the other party?

a perfect meme for this logic. What does it say about the political party that continually uses demonizing, shaming and ridicule in an attempt to sway or even silence the other party? Demonizing like saying that we want to make it legal to "rip babies from the womb" at 8.9 months? Shaming and ridiculing like calling us libtards and saying we want to open up the borders to everyone in a big free for all? Like that? What DOES that say?

No one here has ever said that about abortion. No one here has ever called anyone a libtard, that's already been debunked. And Hillary is the one that said she herself dreams of open borders.

You should know, why don't you tell us your secrets? Just one of the little pearls of sanctimonious Republicans patting themselves on the back over the liberals. You give as good as you get Gia, so don't go pretending to be butt hurt now.

a perfect meme for this logic. What does it say about the political party that continually uses demonizing, shaming and ridicule in an attempt to sway or even silence the other party? It doesn't really matter in this thread, because that wasn't my point for starting it. I was merely talking about how I actually got myself involved in a conversation that revolves around willful ignorance by the one who started it on Facebook. I mean, it is willful ignorance to continue to insist that Hillary alone can change or do away with the constitution, wouldn't you agree? A small bit of reading would explain to that person what she should already know about how our democracy works. Since she seems to refuse to do that, then that's why I call it "willful ignorance". That's the point of this thread.
