Mine is mounted on the wall but not super high up, it doesn't change the viewing angle. I have a small stand that goes underneath that holds all the peripherals and the cords to the tv and boxes/games/etc go through the wall so you don't see any cords. I don't know that there is a real benefit to mounting the tv on the wall I just prefer the look.

I am one of those "tacky" people ( am I the only one who was offended? ) who have the tv mounted on the wall. It is over the fireplace and the components are on a small shelf beside my fireplace. I was very happy to get rid of a big heavy piece of furniture to hold my TV.

Our family room has these great recessed bookcase/cabinet units along two walls. The center one on the longest wall has a perfect space for a huge TV... so that's exactly where it went. There's plenty of room there too for all the peripherals.

We have 3 TVs mounted around our house. The family room tv is above the fire place and has the heat deflector below it. The box is in a built in unit to the side of the room. The other two TVs are in rooms and both have pieces of furniture underneath them. I think the tv looks funny with nothing below it - it would look like a store or a nail salon or something like that. The furniture below is decorative and functional, and makes a room feel warmer.
The tv on the wall is very clean looking - all wires are hidden and it doesn't stick out as much.

We are getting ready to build. Our tv will be mounted over the fireplace, which will really be the only choice. They are putting in a flexible tube behind the wall that opens to one side of the fireplace so that all the cords can be out of sight. I am a bit apprehensive about it being up high. But I think I will be glad they are building in the cord tube ( or whatever you call it).

Ours is mounted. It's just above the height if a light switch. A sound bar is mounted right under it. Then we have a coffee table underneath to hold the box. I like it, and it's easier to change up the tables underneath instead of having to drag the whole table and tv. One of reasons boyfriend mounted it was because it doesn't fit the stand that our other tv fits on. And another reason was I think he wanted to show off his TV set up skills
