I'll go first. Can't share this even if I exclude SIL because there are just too many other family members that I would also need to exclude.
My MIL is coming in for Thanksgiving and is supposed to stay with SIL today through Wednesday. Dh is supposed to pick of MIL on Wed from SIL's house and drive to the cousins for Thanksgiving. Dh and I usually stay in a hotel the night before bc of the long drive. I was coerced into working, so I am not going.
SIL moved this past weekend. DH asked her probably 3 times if she wanted us to take MIL first because of the move. SIL kept declining. See where this is going? SIL just called and asked us (told us) to pick up MIL and have her stay here instead.
In the meantime, dh and I had a movie date scheduled for this afternoon. Tickets were already bought and are nonrefundable. Yes, technically I could go alone, but my house is a DISASTER area!!!! Seriously. I thought I had until Thursday night to prepare and planned to get started this evening and thought I had Tuesday and Wednesday. My craft room is the spare bedroom and has become quite the dumping area. I did not clean up after my last few projects either and was planning to move my sewing stuff in there. My sewing stuff in all in the dining room where there is more room to work. I spent the weekend working on several projects (dancewear) that I needed to get done and mailed today.
I am thrilled to have time to spend with my MIL (I do like my MIL <3) but to pick up and put away 2 rooms, plus the kitchen, family room and clean the bathrooms in 2 hours is too freaking much! I was supposed to have MORE than 2 days to do all of this. Dh is trying to help but that pains me because I will never find anything again. LOL. Plus he has to leave for the airport in a bit.
AGGHHH!!
Oh, and why I am wasting time here? I'm typing while I am eating lunch. I had planned to come home from the gym, shower, eat lunch and then go to the Harry Potter movie (can't think of the name in my panic mode!)

Can your DH take your MIL to the movies? Then the tickets aren't wasted and you have more time to clean. Or will she get in after movie time?

Let her help clean the kitchen and vacuum. Or just bag it and spend the day rugelach. Then invite me over.

I love my MILs (DH has a mom and a s-mom), but I do feel they are a tad judgey about things, so I totally get your panic. However, at this point, I think you're just going to have to fess up that you've been crafting/sewing like a madwoman and thought you'd have TWO DAYS to prep for her visit.
I'd clean the stuff that indicates general cleanliness, like bathrooms, floors, and the kitchen. The messiness can be blamed on all your (Very Important And Very Immediate!) projects.
A glass of wine is in order, as well.

I agree with TheOtherMeg - clean the bathrooms (or better still, have DH clean the bathrooms), touch up the kitchen, have a glass of wine, and apologise to MIL that you've been busy with projects and with the late change in plans, the house isn't finished |

I hate last minute changes too. I'd be tempted to tell SIL that you already made plans since she declined your offer to take MIL several times just to make a point. Either that or set into speed cleaning mode.

Lol. Taking a quick break. Dh cleaned the bathroom that was the worst and will do the shower when he gets back. Other bathroom can get away with a quick swiff of the floor. Movie is in 30 minutes and he just left for the airport. SIL called after the plane had already taken off.
Making big progress in the bedroom. You can walk in it now. Lol. Floor is almost done and then I can take the surfaces. It will be presentable. Kitchen isn't but at least the stove top and the counter on that side is clean. Ahhh back to work

You're a far better sister in law then me. I'd have told her we already made plans since she didn't say anything when we asked her 50 bazillion times and the soonest I can get her is tomorrow. Feeling your frustration.

Taking another break. Bedroom is done. 2 bathrooms are presentable though dh needs to clean the shower closest to the bedroom. I am exhausted now. Eating Bugles before I tackle the kitchen clutter (I need to expose the actual table). I think the dining room is a lost cause at the moment. I wish he could just pop in and visit SIL, but they live at least 2 hours away from us. Truth is that MIL prefers to stay with us, but does put in time there to spend some time with her grandson. The good news is that my MIL loves to shop and I am sure we will go out tomorrow for a nice lunch and some shopping.  I will be rewarded with a lovely day tomorrow. Maybe we will even get to the movies. <sigh> |

Ugh - I *hate* when YOU can clearly see how something's going to go down, but other people refuse to see it and then expect you to make up for their lack of vision. At least she's someone you don't mind spending time with!

It seems as though you have it mostly cleaned up.
If it were me, I would make a quick joke about the clutter and let her know how happy you are to see her.
I doubt she is going to come in with white gloves.
However, I would be slightly torked at sil for the last minute change.

Honestly if I had non refundable tickets to the movie I'd have told SIL that your not available until after dinner on that short if notice and SIL could pick up MIL and entertain her for dinner then drop her off.
But alas you've already went with it so have a great visit with your MIL and don't sweat the craft/sewing stuff. That was necessary and will be picked up as you can.

I'm sorry you're so disorganized. My house is always company ready. I get all my dusting and vacuuming done every morning well before noon and so my afternoons are free - if I'm not out lunching and shopping with friends I'm curled up on the couch with a good book and now that cold weather is here, a fire crackling in the fireplace.
I always have my refrigerator stocked with food just in case we get unexpected guests.
When I get an unexpected phone call regarding guests coming, I need 1.5 minutes tops to pull down the covers of the guest bed in a most welcoming way and put a pitcher of fresh ice water on the nightstand. Oh, I also fluff the pillows in my living room.
Just kidding. I'd be stressed out worse than you were. Kudos to you for getting everything done. I love seeing the affection you have toward your MIL. Enjoy your time with her!

However, I think I might have traded (some of) those things for a MIL who enjoyed my company. |
