Hey Peas, I just got a phone call a few minutes ago from a local radio station telling me that I won tickets to see Theatre Calgary's production of A Christmas Carol This is an institution in our city and I'm really excited to go I've won a number of contests in the past ... makeup and perfume ... tickets to hockey games, etc. Nothing major but enough to keep me entering Do you often win things?

Yes, I have won 3 big prizes at crops (they give one at each crop) and there are often 100-200 people at the crop. I go about three times a year.

Go you!
I used to enter a lot of competitions, but haven't for years. I won several short trips, including ones to New York, Paris, and Rome, and a couple that were in 5-star hotels in the UK. I also won dozens of CDs, books, DVDs and games.

Not usually. In fact, I'm so used to not winning that I didn't even hear my name called at a company Christmas party for the grand prize, my table mates had to shove me to realize it was ME that won. That was 5 years ago and haven't won anything since either.

Not at all. I don't think I have ever won anything, save for a free ticket here and there on the lottery.
The only thing I am good at getting picked for is jury duty. It's the worst superpower ever.

I've won 3 contests on Facebook in the last year. A $100 gift card to a local boutique, a prize package that included a cookbook, water bottle and a few other small things, and a Lego/College Choice gift package. That was the best one, we got a Lego set, 4 tickets for Brickworld and $529 contributed to our College Choice account-a 529 college savings plan. I won each of them just by liking a Facebook post.

Almost never. I won a big prize at a crop once in over a decade of attending multiple events a year. DH and DD are both crazy lucky though. DH wins money and prizes all.the.time. And DD looks to be following in his footsteps, she has won the raffle drawing for one of three big Easter baskets at our local egg hunt two years in a row and there had to have been over a hundred kids there. I like to say the only thing I've ever been lucky in is love, LOL!

If I got jury duty pay from work, I wouldn't mind at all, but being self-employed, it hurt the wallet a lot. I went a few times because I felt civic obligation, but now I just get out of it. I've done my time, pick someone else. My family in general all get picked WAY more than anyone I know. My grandfather had been called 19 times at one point.

I am not lucky at winning. I have won some things but when it comes to winning random drawings and such I generally do not win at all. In fact, even if there is 100 people and 75 of them will win I will be one who doesn't. I went to a crop where everyone won something, and my name didn't get called. So the crop hostess had some left over item that she came up with for me. Now that's pretty unlucky. At a work swap once my boss knew I don't drink alcohol so what did he give? A bottle of wine. I generally enter things but winning - I wouldn't bet on it!

Yes. It used to be my hobby before I took up running. I had the same limerick that I've used many times to win things like $500 vouchers to stores or dinners out. I just change the words a bit to suit the competition. In the US I think it's called sweeping and people do it as a job. I really don't think luck has anything to do with it. Being different or what the judges are looking for is key. Like one competition for kids toys went like this. Tell us why your child deserves X toy. Everyone wrote about how special their kid was and their kids characteristics. I wrote. 'I'm Fred. I am six and three quarters. I like rocks. I like cars. I like new rocks and new cars...etc' It was written as Fred and the judges liked the originality. I don't even think you need to be a wordsmith. Just quirky.

I generally win nothing. Lately it seems if I win a contest it's for ODS involving Nascar. A few years back I won a favorite driver contest using his picture and my twitter handle was on one of the cars. Just today I won him a Sprint Cup flag that was used in a race. I never win anything that I really want...LOL.

I live in a city of over a million people so we don't get called often. My experience was very eye opening. I'd definitely do it again

I enter scrappy related contests frequently. I usually go a long stretch of winning nothing and then all of a sudden, I win a bunch in succession. The first one I won was a Ranger scavenger hunt (they gave a prize to the first correct email and then a random winner after that, I was the random winner) many years ago and I'll never forget it. I also find that I tend to win giveaways when I desperately need the pick me up. I consider it the universe's way of keeping the good and the bad in balance.

Ever since I was a kid I have won things both intentionally and unintentionally. I don't enter contests, because I won't give out my info to strangers or potential solicitors, but that doesn't matter. I win anyway. I've won televisions, money, huge spa baskets and all sorts of stuff. It's great fun.
ETA: I won the first football pool I ever entered and I knew nothing about football. People HATE me.

oh, but you never know when they will come to collect the cash and change out the drawer. hate it when that happens and all activity stops for a few minutes.

No, but DH and my youngest are so I always make them pick numbers or take the raffle ticket The one time I won a contest was during a Super Bowl event. There were hundreds of people and I won the grand prize, which was a grill. I was so excited because we desperately needed to replace our grill. Then they presented it to me. It was a giant football helmet that had Budweiser written all over it and you had to lift the face mask up to get to the grill We ended up giving it away to a guy who clearly loved the thing so much that he was asking the promoters where he could buy his own. He was over the moon when I told him we already had a grill at home and he should give this one a good home. He called his wife on the phone to excitedly tell her about their new grill. I can only imagine the look on that poor woman's face when he got home and showed it to her

I'm pretty lucky with drawings/door prizes. The biggest was $1,000 to a shoe store last year. That was fun to spend. I've also won a Blu Ray player with a surround sound system, a gift certificate for a condo for a week, a dozen decorated Elf on the Shelf cookies, a week of zoo camp for DD, a year membership to the local Children's Museum, $50 to Gigi's cupcakes, and $25 to Starbucks. In raffle drawings where you purchase tickets and drop them in the raffle item of your choice, I've won a painting, several gift cards, a kitchen aid mixer, and a few gift baskets. I also have won my fair share of smaller door prizes.
I don't win contests much, but in 4th grade, I entered an essay in a Father of the Year contest, and mine won. My dad got a great prize package full of gift certificates and stuff. There was a looooong dry spell after that where I never won anything, but around 2003, I started winning a good bit. I remember that time frame because I was going to Creative Memories crops, even though that wasn't my cropping style, and I won door prizes several times in a row.
I've been trying to win a big trip for years with no success though.

I used to be, but it has been a long time since I've won anything. I've won tickets, cash (the last thing I recall winning was money), CDs etc. The biggest thing I've won was a weeklong trip to Ecuador on a working ranch in the Andes Mts. during their roundup, that was part of an adventure travel show radio promotion.

I'm not, but other family members are.
My brother-in-law won a car.
My one sister wins raffles all the time. I can spend $20 on tickets, she'll spend $5, we'll put them in the same baskets and she'll be the winner.
My one sister-in-law wins every time she goes to the casino. She was complaining the one night that she ONLY won $500. I'd be happy if I broke even.
Another sister-in-law wins lots of radio contests.
