nd she didn't get sick for TWO WEEKS after she got home. Usually surgical infections start soon afterwards--she travelled with a drain and was walking around with it for *two weeks* before getting the infection. While earlier infections are more common, this certainly is not unusual either, especially with drains in place. I've known people who've had cosmetic surgeries such as reconstruction that include a tummy tuck (tissue transfer techniques) who've had nasty infections much further out. Mycoplasma is one that is more common with later infections than the typical staph or gram negatives you see with an earlier infection.

My dentist who I've gone to for 35 years told me he knows 3 dentists that retired and now practice dentistry across the border in Mexico. Their patients are mostly Americans.

This is exactly what I thought about when I read the thread title. Yikes. After reading that letter - yikes! that is awful.
I'm a bit surprised she is not having any problems with her insurance company covering the current problems she is having related to the procedure done in another country.

the only american we met at a resort in dominican republic in february had been to DR several times for dental work and a bone that needed to be reset or something. he spoke *very* highly of the experience. i don't remember specific numbers he quoted but my jaw dropped.
i would certainly want to research things thoroughly before i might feel comfortable.

I just read that a few days ago, also. So.....with that fresh in my mind, I would say to research, research, research before you make arrangements. Your health/mobility isn't anything to mess with.

OK I'm a Brit so we don't have the financial issues with medical matters that you do, but if I have something which has an excessive NHS waiting time I will be heading to Bangkok Bumrungrad hosp. My brother was in there following a heart attack and required an op to fit stents. I flew out to look after him. The place was immaculate, doctors spoke excellent English, treatment was fast and effective and bang up to date. I did almost have heart failure when I was given a bill for over 1 million baht for ICU, surgery, 2 weeks inpatient, food, meds and all other bills, but luckily it was less than £20,000 in fact.
A substantial number of the patients are medical tourists from USA and Asia.

This isn't really medical tourism, but as of 2016 our dental plan is actively encouraging members to use several clinics in Tijuana. There are no copays or deductibles if we use those clinics over the San Diego based dentists.

I know 2 people who have had breast implants in Thailand. Personally I wouldn't do it. Well, I wouldn't have implants full stop, but certainly not in Thailand. I've read too many horror stories about breast implants and cosmetic surgery that went horribly and sometimes fatally wrong overseas.
If I lived in the US and faced the possibility of bankruptcy (or significant health risks) because I couldn't afford treatment, then I would have to consider it.
I work with a Vietnamese guy who still has family in Vietnam. There is quite a bit dental tourist industry there, and he told me that the guy who runs one of the biggest dental clinics there in an American. You'd have to feel safe going to that particular clinic. Hey, maybe I might get some work done there when I go to Vietnam next year!
