I was reading a Facebook group this morning and someone posted that her 10 year old son, "bless his heart, wanted to see what would happen if he put a flame to it". It was sitting in a bowl with cotton balls and from the pictures she posted it completely burned up along with charring the wooden table it was sitting on.
She says she now has a "hilarious story to tell for Christmases to come" and she hopes her "amazingly curious and wonderful little boy will never play with fire again"
In the comments people were telling her she has a great attitude, is a super cool mom, and this is just so funny...
Am I the only one who thinks this is a crazy way to react to something like this??
Eta: At least she doesn't have to deal with the damn elf anymore...

No, you aren't the only one.
Since when is arson curiosity? What's next? Wondering what would happen to the family cat if it was microwaved?

At age ten? Yeah, this is the same mom who pooh poohed her son's harassment of my daughter, including threatening her and destroying her property, as "childish mischief."

Eta: At least she doesn't have to deal with the damn elf anymore... That was my first thought! But seriously-after all the fires that have taken place recently Wildfires, Cambridge, Oakland-I don't find it funny. She is lucky that the outcome of her situation wasn't a tragedy.

Yikes. That sounds freaking scary to me!
I thought that there were a few basic rules that most parents agreed with even from one generation to the next...you know, "look both ways before you cross the street", "don't run with scissors", and "don't play with fire".

I have a 10 y/o - if she EVER pulled a stunt like that, she would be down at the fire station finding out exactly what fires DO and why arson is WRONG. And if I had ANY hint that this was part of a bigger behaviour concern rather than just a stupid kid thing, she would be in therapy in a heartbeat
'eh no big deal'? HELL NO

I would be livid if my 5 or 7 year old did this, let alone a 10 year old. I mean, really? Fire is never a good plan. She's damn lucky it wasn't her whole house burning down because of his "curiosity".
It almost sounds like she was watching him do it? "Oh sure, go ahead, dear boy! Please satisfy your need to set our elf on fire."

IMHO this action is not acceptable at any age. Rather than posting the story & photos online, the parent should be securing matches (& other accelerants) in their home & getting the child help to protect him & their family/property. It's not a laughing matter, which should be obvious given the recent reports of loss due to wildfires, warehouse fire, etc.

Part of me smugly rolls my eyes at her mediocre parenting...
And part of me thinks a fiery death is a perfectly acceptable end to those demon dolls.

Wtf?!?! If one of my kids set our elf on fire IN OUR HOME the last thing I would do would be to take to facebook and praise their curiosity. They might want to look at that behavior a little more and think about whether there is something bigger to worry about. She's lucky he didn't burn the house down!!!

Lighting anything on fire in the house is terrifying. So much could go wrong. Starting around age 10, I taught my daughters how to use our gas range. They have a healthy respect for its power.

My kids will grow up in a world populated by the little pieces of shit they are raising. I've been puzzled at many of the changes in attitude when kids misbehave in some recent parenting generations. But I never understood many of the photographing and scrapbooking or facebook posting of many things that kids used to get scolded or punished for that they aren't now. Heck I don't even give my kid a ball and tell them to go play in the street (like our neighbors do) For us streets were for cars.

Does she understand that potential serial killers do stuff like this? I'd be more worried about my son's mental health and propensity to enjoy doing harm.

I saw that, too!
I can't tell whether she means that he set fire to the elf, or to the bowl of cotton balls that he was sitting in? Setting fire to the elf seems very creepy to me!

I saw the thread on FB where this is discussed. I am surprised so many commented like it was ok. WTF? The mom said in a comment she was upset at first, but then got over it. Weird.

So Sassenach and mom , did you reply on that Facebook post with your concerns? Sometimes everyone will agree just to "belong" to the crowd and not stand out. Some people need a wake up call! I would have told them on that post the dangers of this.

My youngest was fascinated with fire also. Thankfully nothing ever came of it and while I was always calm when we talked about what could happen, I do know that I was one match away from losing everything though. Kids just don't see the consequences of fire.
On a side note, I think the creepy Peeping Tom Elf would cause me to want to set fire to it. To me, he looks like a pervert.

Accountability does not seem to exist much anymore. I'd be upset about the damage, the potential tragedy, and very concerned! 10 years old, way old enough to know better! And I'd be terrified of a younger child did that! Momma is putting her head in the sand and just hoping things are fine.
