We have a hanging light fixture above our kitchen table. The light fixture isn't in the middle of the table. If we had a specific size table it could be but ours is large so it just doesn't work in the space. We want to get a new table and my dh suggested getting a plate to cover the larger size whole. At first I thought that is crazy and won't look right. I pictures a detailed, ornate one but after looking online there are some plain white ceiling medallions. It would be my pick for the space but I can't see how else we would cover the whole. I am not open to patching it and repainting as that would look like a repair (btdt) and even if someone was amazing I am not open to repainting 4 areas of ceilings. They all flow together so there is no cut off point. If anyone has ever had this issue what solution did you find that worked well? Thanks!

Before you do anything make sure that there are supports in your ceiling where you want the light to go. I want to hang a light over a table in our basement and can't. There aren't any supports for it.

I've seen lights with the chain from the light swagged over to a new hook. There wasn't an attempt to hide it. I would probably do that before I put a big focal point on the ceiling and then hung a light 6" away.
We're military and have lived in 14 houses in 24 years. I don't know that I've ever seen a light for the table in the proper place. It's one of my peeves.

We had the same situation. We got a new light and had it installed maybe six inches away from the original leaving a hole in the ceiling. We kept saying we would get it patched, then we got used to it and did not notice it (but I'm sure everyone else did.)
It was probably that way for 5+ years.
We ended up having some other work done and the guy patched it and feathered it. The patching/paint and it is not even noticeable. It did not take him long and did not cost a lot but it was done along with some other work.
