We are visiting Rehoboth Beach for the first time. We took a chance and booked a condo. It's very nice but is on Route 1 near the outlets...major traffic! We are used to staying at a place in Surfside Beach, SC that is on the beach and very quiet but wanted something with less of a drive since we are taking my parents with us. DS was dying to see the beach so we went straight down to the beach. It's....ummm....not our cup of tea. It's very crowded and the people were....not our cup of tea. I have no idea how to say it nicely. We like more quiet, more space, less drunks, etc. Does anyone know of any beaches close by that are a bit more off the beaten path? We are going to try Cape Henlopen State Park, because they have a large fishing pier and my ds loves to fish. Other than that, we are at a loss. I checked trip advisor and the beach I went to is "highly recommended". Any suggestions to save my trip?

Cape Henlopen is definitely more quiet. You could also try Indian River Outlet which is south of Rehoboth. Not sure if Dewey Beach or Bethany Beach might be less crowded.

Fenwick Island used to be nice and less populated - we summered there several times. It's been over 20 yrs though so have no idea what it's like now. Good luck!

My sister-in-law has a house near Fenwick Island and we've vacationed there many years. It's pretty quiet, but still close enough drive if you want to check out the action at the Ocean City boardwalk.

I should add that I love Rehoboth but it can get very crowded and life in town after 9pm can be quite rowdy. The traffic along Rt. 1 is horrible! If you are used to a more quiet vacation check out Lewes. It's a quaint quiet town. You could also check out the beach there, although it's the bay. And by all means, get Grotto pizza!

I'd go to one of the parks, like Indian River Inlet or Cape Henlopen. It's $8 to get in for non DE residents. I personally prefer this much more than the boardwalk beach areas like Rehobeth or Ocean City. There is a bath house (bathrooms!) and a snack shop. I like Indian River Inlet over Cape Henlopen unless I'm camping there.

I'm just floored. Rehoboth is one of my favorite places in the world. I've spent a week there every summer for most of my life. I just got back last week.
Drunks? Seriously? Where? Maybe on the boardwalk late at night but I haven't encountered many there, either. That boardwalk is the most wholesome boardwalk I've ever seen. Very family friendly. We go there because we feel so comfortable bringing the kids.
It IS very working class, if that matters to you.
I don't think the beach is crazy crowded, either. Maybe there are a lot more people there now than there was last week? You were at the beach near the boardwalk? I'm boggled. What you are describing is nothing like my Rehoboth Beach.
I would suggest Cape Henlopen. As someone else said, it is 8 dollars a car but it there isn't a lot of people. I was just at the fishing pier. I was wading in the water on the beach by the pier and horseshoe crabs kept running into my foot. There is a tiny nature center near there that has large aquariums of all of the fish native around there. I had no idea that there were seahorses on the Atlantic coast. Also dogfish is another name for sand shark and rockfish is another name for striped bass. Also news to me.
I wouldn't like it if I were out by the outlet malls, however. We rent a house a block and a half from the beach/boardwalk and hardly ever drive anywhere. We go because you can pretty much get everything you need walking.
While you are there I'd recommend going to Dogfishhead Brewery, on Rehoboth Blvd. The 60 Minute Ale is fabulous and last week the catch of the day was butterfish, which I never heard of before but I swear it was the best fish I've ever had in my life.
I also recommend going to Dos Locos for their crab quesadillas. There is a huge amount of crab in them- it is a "don't miss" every year.
Fischer's popcorn has a caramel corn dusted with crab seasoning. It might sound weird but it is amazing.
You need to get an orange/vanilla swirl cone at Kohr's too.

We are going to Rehobeth in August for the first time mostly to see the original Dogfish Head. We have a local branch that we go to weekly. I just had a World Wide Stout - my favorite of theirs. Anyhow, dh wants to visit the mother ship, so we are trekking up in August. I was distressed to read the OP and hope that our experience is more like yours!

I'm sooo jealous...!!!! My fave beach is right next to Rehoboth---it's called Dewey.....the last time we were there, yes---it gets crowded, but there weren't any drunks or anything weird. I've always heard that Bethany is even more family-friendly; so you might want to visit....it's only a few miles from Rehoboth .... OMG....and YES--like someone said above---Make SURE and get GROTTO pizza and Dolle's Caramel Popcorn, a sub (grinder) from Louie's, and OMG----french fries from THRASHERS!!!! I seriously love Grotto's plain cheese pizza SO much, I would pay to have it Fed-X'd to me....there is just something about it.....!!!!!!!!!!! By the way, the BOARDWALK is sooo much fun.....I have soo many happy memories!!!!

Rehobeth has never been my favorite spot, but it is easy to find great food and have fun on the boardwalk.
It's been a bunch of years, but Dewey, Bethany Dunes, Fenwick.... all had less people. I know at least Bethany Dunes has been developed more, but still, nothing like Rehobeth.

I'd avoid Ocean City MD. It was named the most dangerous town in Maryland!

We just got back from Bethany. It's called "The Quiet Resorts" for a reason. lol. We actually stay in South Bethany, which is logically enough south of main Bethany. There's nothing there but houses along the beach and various small stores and restaurants up and down the highway. But we get a house right on the beach so there's a block between us and the highway. It's VERY quiet, and it's mostly families or couples on the beach during the day. For the first time ever we had one morning very early a group of loud college-age kids on the beach. I'm sure they'd been up all night and somehow decided to stop at Bethany. It never happens, but this time it did. I was deciding to get up and look for my phone to call the police and before I could get out of the chair they showed up. Quiet restored. lol. We drive up to Rehoboth only for the outlet malls there. We go to Yankee Candle, the Corelle store, and a few clothing stores, mostly because there's no sales tax in Delaware. But otherwise we stay on our peaceful beach, and maybe just go into main Bethany for ice cream in the evening. That's lovely also -- more people of course but the boardwalk is small, no arcades or rides or things like that. sigh...now I want to go back to Bethany. Oh and South Bethany is right next to Fenwick, that others were talking about on this thread. South Bethany doesn't allow dogs on the beach during the summer but Fenwick is a state park (or national park?) and does allow them. So we try to get a house on the south end of South Bethany and take our dog down there every day.

We went to Cape Henlopen State Park yesterday. It was gorgeous! It was crowded but the beach is wider than at Rehoboth so it didn't feel as cramped. We are early people so we were there at 8:45 and gone by 2. We ate oysters at Fin's Raw Bar last night and are planning to get some Grotto pizza today!
We met a woman in the market who owns a house on Dewey Beach. She recommended Bethany Beach as well, so we drove down last night after dinner to check it out. It's beautiful! We wrote down several phone numbers for rentals while we were there and plan to go there today for the beach.
This is definitely an exploratory trip for us to learn more about the area!

We use Sandcastle Realty in Bethany and they've never steered us wrong on anything. They have a LOT of properties there, and they've always been very responsive when we've needed anything for the house. I would recommend them.

I'm glad you had a better experience today. I love the area so I hope you end up having an enjoyable experience. The best time to go is in the fall. No crowds, no hot and humid weather, a lot less traffic.

Bethany beach is going to be packed this week. We decided to take a day trip to that beach around the 4th with our almost 1 year old. Omg, it was soooo crowded. It looked like there was some pretty fun stuff to do, but it was too crowded, I was too pregnant, and the baby was too fussy. After a few hrs we got back in the car and just drive back home to VA.

Oh, yeah, with it being the week of the 4th it's probably a madhouse there. If you go into town to watch the fireworks just be prepared to sit in traffic for an hour or more trying to get back to your condo. We did it one time and vowed never to go into town again for the fireworks.

My mom grew up with a summer home at Bethany Beach. It was a special place for our family for many years. If you are looking for rentals there for next year, Hickman real estate is the company that has been there the longest.

Go the other way on highway 1 and go down Broadkill Road. When you reach the end there is a small general store and public access to Broadkill beach. Very quiet, but you'll have to park on the road.
