Decades old Watermans. What do you mean, drafting mechanical pencils? Lead holders that require a separate lead pointer or just a good mechanical pencil? I don't have a clue what the difference is. I'll have to ask my child when they get home from school.

Wow, everyone, I'm really loving all of the replies. I appreciate all of your posts and info. for us to check out.
I think my biggest concern is going to be ink bottle storage and pen breakage/explosions.

i prefer to use mechanical pens with BOLD lead. the more delicate lead like .7 or smaller breaks on me too much because i'm so heavy handed.

Apparently it's got a thinner point so you can get closer to a straight edge.

I love mechanical pencils - use one daily. Also love writing with fountain pens, have several, but don't use them all the time, but will bring it out from time to time.

I *LOVE* fountain pens! I have several Pilot Metropolitans, & Jinho pens. The Jinho are nice and extremely cheap. My favorite pen that I use everyday is the Pilot Demico Vanishing Point in Champagne. It is divine! I have a bunch of ink as well in all colors. My husband uses a Lamy. He has 2. I highly recommend Goulet Pens. They are fantastic!

My niece was over this weekend and brought her newest pen that she purchased from Goulet Pens. It's the new, limited edition one that just came out. What a beautiful color.

hmmm... sounds like I might need to get a drafting mechanical pencil, too! I like writing with a really fine point. After this thread got posted, I got out both my fountain pens (which had sadly dried out from disuse, ), cleaned them out, refilled them, and am now using them regularly- I had forgotten how much I like writing with them! They're so much easier for me to write with-- since the ink flows easier, I don't have to press down hard, like I do when I write with a ballpoint pen-- my wrist hurts after writing a lot with a ballpoint pen (and the fountain pen ink colors are so pretty!) ETA: this pen is absolutely gorgeous!! Namiki Yukari Maki-e Milky Way pen... (fixed link)

I have a couple of the Metropolitans--a white one and a green one. Plus another brand, the name is escaping me, in a pretty burgundy. I love pens! Yet, the fountain pens are a relatively new acquisition/burgeoning obsession. I was looking at one that was $160ish and contemplating spending my Christmas money on it. Sense took over and I closed out that website. I've been enjoying using the fountain pens on assignments and notes at home, though. They are my new go to for greeting cards.
