Update 2/13: Just getting home from the ER. Ughhhhhh
It is a DVT (blood clot). They started me on a six month treatment of Xarelto, and told me to follow up with my surgeon tomorrow.
I was in a bed in the hallway the whole time. Doctor may have dropped a F bomb when he saw how long everything was taking.
I am so nervous about all of this!
Thanks everyone for encouraging me to just go.
******************************************
Background: I had surgery on my knee last Wednesday (2/8). Simple procedure. Removed some loose bodies. Not much pain.
Fast forward to yesterday. I feel like I have a Charlie horse in my calf. Pain is sharp and throbbing, especially when I move my ankle or try to stand. There is no swelling or redness in the area that I can tell.
We are in the middle of a "blizzard", and my doctors are not in, called primary care and orthopedics. I'm assuming the er is open.
Have a follow up tomorrow at 10. I want to wait it out, but DH wants to go to er.
Has anyone had any experience with this?
Sorry it got so long.
Thanks

I would definitely go to the ED. You need an ultrasound to rule out a thrombus. Please don't wait any longer!
Sincerely,
A concerned former ED nurse

My gut feeling says go to the ER - you do not want to mess around if it's a blood clot.
Please update and let us know how you are.

My DH has had a few DVT.
I wouldn't chance it myself, simply because you just had surgery. The likeliness that it is a clot is much higher. If you go to your doctor tomorrow, they will probably send you for ultrasound then anyhow, delaying their appointment. If you go today, you can have the ultrasound results already.
My husband's clots didn't swell his leg too much, the pain was the main indicator of them.
It could be that you are just walking different and the altered gait is causing the pain but I would go to the ER. Sorry it isn't the answer you want, I hope it's just muscular!

When I thought I might have a blood clot in my leg the doctor said he'd rather test ten and have it be negative than to miss one.
Did you call you doctor and review your symptoms?
Good luck and I also hope it's just a muscle.

Please go. I knew someone who had a blood clot after minor knee surgery. Key word: knew.

Definitely something that needs to be seen straight away. Hope it turns out to just be muscle pain.

Every situation is different, but my Mom had same symptoms as you and ended up with blood clot from the knee down to ankle that resulted in vascular surgery. She described as a bad charley horse that never went away.
I would not hesitate to get to the ER. Hoping for the best!

I am just seeing this, and you've updated once - but I am so glad you are going in.
I had blood clots in my legs that traveled. They felt like a Charley Horse for the first day or so, then my skin got warm.
Please update how your ER trip goes. I am concerned for you!

We are in the middle of a "blizzard", and my doctors are not in, called primary care and orthopedics. I'm assuming the er is open. Even when doctors are not in, someone is on call and can take a phone call. In this situation, knowing there is a snow storm, I would have wanted to speak to someone for a brief phone evaluation before heading to the ED on the off-chance that they thought it was not an issue.

I had knee surgery (very serious) and 4 weeks after, when I stopped using the CPM machine, I had the same thing. I had 2 DVT blood clots behind my knee. They were not in danger of traveling to my lungs because of where they were but they had to be addressed ASAP. I was not hospitalized and they resolved within 4 months. My dad is a cardio thoracic surgeon and he said it would be okay for me to wait. I waited 2 days until my follow up. If you wait one day, you should have been okay.

ER ASAP
A friend's dad passed away 5 days after knee surgery. He collapsed at PT. A blood clot that travelled. Just....gone when everything looked ok.

Homan's sign is a test you could do,(google it) though it's definitely not conclusive, but it's our go to test. From what you have said here though, even if you would have called and talked to someone I am sure they would have had you come in. Just from your description. Good luck.
