A situation I witnessed yesterday at the eye dr: Who should be seen first? The 1:00 appt who showed up more than 10 minutes late or the 1:15 appt that showed up early (was told to in order to fill out paperwork). Does anyone work at a Dr's office? Is there a policy regarding this? I was a bystander to the drama that ensued.

I don't work in a medical office, but I have been seen early, if the person before me was late.
My opinion - be on time or shut up and be glad they saw you at all.

The late person takes second place. Hopefully the Doc will be able to see her after the early person but if not, that's her issue.

In my old doctor's office, you signed in when you arrived. The next person on that sheet gets seen. So even if you are still filling out paperwork and they call your name, you are next. If your appointment was at 1 pm, and you arrived at 1:10 pm and someone whose appointment was say 1:10 pm, was there before you and signed in before you, they were seen before you.
Now, if you are at an office that have several health care providers, there is a chance that the person who arrived after you will get seen before you if their provider is free to see another patient.

I was turned away once at the dentist with my 2 kids in tow after being more than 10 minutes late (like it was literally 11 minutes but their policy is 10 minutes) and told to reschedule. So the 1:15 would be seen first after the 1:00 had been a no show after 10 minutes. Once they arrived the front desk would have to consider if they had time to fit them in during the 1:15 appt or would need to reschedule.

I have 20 minutes to do each patient. My 'late' window is 10 minutes. So if you are 10 minutes or more late, I will still do your scan, but you will sit and wait until I can find a spot a to work you in. Sometimes that means waiting two hours until I can find a moment to slip you in. It's up to you though. Sit and wait without bitching, or reschedule. Your choice. That's the rule if the next patient hasn't arrived yet.
If my next patient is already arrived, at about 5 after the late persons appt I'll go ahead and do them and then take the late person after.

I don't work in a doctors office, but I don't think it's as simple as first come first served. One patient might be a follow up, and can be examined in a matter of minutes.
Another might have called with an issue the office suspects will need a test or shot, and more time to examine.
It's not like everyone has equivalent appointments, like an auto oil change.

The late person forfeited their appointment when they were not there at the appointed time. That's the whole point to scheduling appointments.

A good reason to call if you're running late! I have not examined if my pediatrician's office has a policy. I'm usually there on time and have called when I am running late.

You can stay in the waiting room and if he has another person miss an appointment he will see you instead of them or you can reschedule. I love that he is rarely running behind! If I am to see him at 1:15 that is when I see him. I don't get pushed back to 1:30 or 1:40 because the 1:00 apt didn't show up until 1:15

if you miss your appointment slot, then you missed your appointment slot. No reason to make everyone else for the rest of the day run behind because YOU couldn't make it a priority to be on time. If the doctor can fit you in without screwing up everyone else's appointments? great, you got lucky. If not? sucks to be you - go ahead and reschedule and be on time next time.

How does one know the reasons other patients are there?
I currently am doing a weekly or bi weekly check with a nurse. I text her my arrival from the parking lot, and they call me in while she's got patients on the exam rooms. I've gotten some looks when I'm the last one in, first called. Just as I don't know other patients conditions, they don't know mine. It would be poor management to force me to sit in waiting room just because someone else signed in first for their 45 minute exam while I spend less than ten in the area where they do in take.

When ds was very medically fragile, and I knew we would be late to an appointment I would call and they would take the person after us and we would take their spot. We were never more than 20 min late but his stupid frickin cvl and tpn would occlud or blood would.back up or what ever and Id have to take care of that as it was his life line.

I generally agree with what others have posted.
I would only add that my irritation is that they expect me to forfeit my appointment if I'm over 10 minutes late (which I never have been) BUT I am generally not seen until 45 minutes after my appointment time. Why can't I grab a starbucks or wait in my car (away from sick people) if they are always running behind. My time isn't any less valuable than theirs.

Our pediatrician's office will take the next scheduled appointment before taking the person who is late. Their policy is to call the next appointment at the 7 minute mark. If you're scheduled for 1:00 and you're not there by 1:07, but the 1:20 is there, the 1:20 sees the doctor at 1:07. If you're there by the 1:15, they'll put you in the 1:20 slot. But, if you're more than 15 minutes late, your appointment is cancelled and you're charged for the no show.
The ENT that YDS has been seeing for the last few weeks won't see you if you're late. No grace period. The appointment has to be rescheduled. But, if you call ahead and they can swap your appointment with a waiting patient, they'll do that. They charge $50 for a no show. We do sign in and have been seen early when there was a no show. That patient showed up after we'd been taken to the exam room, which is directly behind the check in desk, and could hear her pitching a fit when the office staff told her the appointment was canceled and the slot filled by someone who arrived early for their appointment.

So, yesterday's fiasco:
I was at the eye doctor with my son to pick up his glasses, get them ffitted properly, etc. We weren't waiting for the Dr (one Dr practice). There was a (seemingly perfectly normal and pleasant) 40-something woman sitting near us. I heard the entire conversation when she came in, new patient, 1:15 appt, was there a few minutes before 1:00. She finished her paperwork in a couple of minutes and was sitting there chatting with me here and there. She was on her lunch break from work. At 10+ after 1:00 (didn't check the time) the 1:00 appt walked in. She didn't vocalize any reason or excuse, just signed in and said she had a 1:00. Woman 1:15 makes a remark to me about her being late and how she better not make HER late.
Not a minute or two later woman 1:00 was called back. Woman 1:15 was NOT having that! She stood up, walked to the tech, and told her she was here first and that she was next. The tech asked what time her appointment was, she told her 1:15, and woman 1:00 lost it. She yelled that it wasn't even her appointment time yet (it was probably right at 1:15), she needed to sit her ass down and back the F off. The tech just stood there wide-eyed looking at the receptionist. Woman 1:15 didn't say anything, just walked past woman 1:00 toward the hallway of rooms. The tech then said she needed to wait til she was called, to which she replied, "it's my appt time, so you need to call ME."
Everyone was loud at this point, and I guess the Dr heard and came out to the hallway (there was a wall behind the receptionist area that blocked my view, but I could sure hear it all! They were both told to leave and the police were called. They were out in the parking lot still yelling when the police arrived!
I have to say, this was certainly a first for me! I have never seen an argument break out in a waiting room! Question about the sign in sheet, though. If everyone is taken in the order they signed in, what stops a 1:15 appointment from coming at noon (if that works better for them) and just signing in?!

Well that's just awful! But I will say the receptionist was wrong to bring the late person in making the next person late based on what has happened to me as I said again, the policy I have been told is if you are more than 10 minutes late you must reschedule otherwise it creates a domino effect for the entire day. She should have told Miss late to sit down and taken in the 1:15 woman. That's too bad there was enough drama for the police - and yet another reason why I tell DH on a regular basis there is no way I will take a job as a reception person at a Dr office, I would not want to have to deal with all of that.

We used to have the very best insurance. We were always called as soon as we came in the office, no matter who was sitting there. Oh hell I miss that insurance. You can not believe how I miss that insurance.
On that not The office should stick to the schedule. Altho we all know that getting back into a room doesn't mean that you will get seen any faster.

OMG! I've never seen that happen before!
As for the sign in sheet, if person came in at noon for a 1 pm appointment, they'd have been told that their appointment isn't for another hour and to come back. they wouldn't be seen.
For single doctor office, I'd guess they'd have to stick to the schedule pretty tightly. I've only had to deal with clinics with multiple drs and multiple exam rooms. The schedulers usually schedule the appointments based on what type of appointment they have. That's why some offices are such sticklers for lateness. You throw off their whole schedule.
In your scenario, late person should have been second. Her appt was at 1. She was 10+ min late. Technically, she should have been rescheduled. I bet the office will change their policy now!

I think both women were in the wrong and in the end, if they had to leave and police were called, they both missed their appointments, lol. And to your last point, I was wondering the same thing. If you take the person who is early or signed in early, what's the cut off for people coming in early to sign in?

I have been the late person. I insisted they take the other patient in first, and waited patiently until they could work me in.
