President Obama is back! He was in Chicago for a meeting about his library and foundation. I know he's not the president anymore but somehow him being back makes things a tiny bit better. He had a big smile in the picture and I suspect a small part of him is enjoying the three ring circus that is the White House. Especially after that ridiculous press conference tiny hand's gave today. And I'm glad President Obama is living in DC because I'm sure trump is insecure enough it will eventually get to him a former president, with a 50%+ approval rating when he left office, is just down the street...

nice to know he's around and about. it's hard to imagine people still think Obama is worse than the cluster^&*$ that's in office right now.

I like it when Barack Obama smiles. That is all I have to add but his smile is sincere.

I think he'll be particularly beloved after being sandwiched between Dubya and Trump.

I'm surprised he has time to work on his library plans, while running a shadow government. The Obama conspiracies continue.

I'm curious--do you all think he was really an outstanding president, and he did nothing but great things for the country? Or is it because Trump's so bad Obama's been elevated that much more?
I thought he was a good speaker, a soothing speaker, but basically a motivational speaker. I don't think he was the worst president, but he certainly wasn't the best IMO.
Not asking to criticize anyone's feelings, just wondering what other people see/saw in him that I didn't. And if it matters, I did vote for him once, just so it's out there I am not, nor was I ever, anti-Obama.

I didn't always agree with how Obama approached some situations. I believe part of this political divide is a result of how Republicans treated him when he came in AND his reaction to them.
But the biggest thing is not so much the policies and different parties, but rather the personalities. Obama is educated, well spoken, intelligent, a diplomat. Trump is a loud mouth, sounds stupid, and is easily insulted. When you take into consideration the personal lives, Obama had no scandals. The last time we truly had a scandal-free family was Reagan or maybe the Bushes. I know the twins partied. I remember Malia smoking pot (was it ever actually confirmed?) at a concert.
With Trump, you have multiple wives, scandals every week, and is an embarrassment in terms of how he acts. I'm going off behaviors and personalities, not actual policies.

C-Span just released the 2017 Survey of Presidential Leadership by Historians. President Obama ranks 12th. I think it could have been higher if he didn't have a Congress where the Minority Leader in the Senate Mitch McConnell had said it was his goal to make this president (Obama) a one term president. Nothing good is going to come from statements like that. There is no such thing as a perfect president. None in the past were perfect and none in the future will be either. President Obama had his flaws but he is basically a good man that cares about others. In spite of what some on the right would have you believe. If President Obama had a Congress that was actually willing to work with him I think the country wouldn't be as divided as it is and a lot of the crowd that claims that they were "ignored" wouldn't be feeling that way. But instead you had White House becoming confrontational to work with a Congress that was already confrontational, a president forced to use Executive Orders and Executive Actions to get anything done, nothing coming out of Congress unless it was because of some crisis , and Republicans fighting among themselves that further stopped Congress from doing the people's work. What could have been.

I think we're heading down the same path now tbh. I do agree that Obama seemed to be a good man, a good husband, and good father. And I definitely never felt the need to mute the t.v. when he spoke, lol.

I agree with this completely. I think that Obama went into office willing to compromise but was faced with total opposition from the Republicans digging in their heels at every turn. I can't fault the man for resorting to doing what he had to in order to get anything accomplished at all. I think it's kind of a miracle that Obama succeeded in bringing us back from the brink as well as he did in spite of the mess he was *actually* handed and how much obstruction he actually faced. For Trump to say he "inherited a mess" just shows how completely out of touch with reality he truly is.

I went to the West Wing quite a bit this past year and one of my favorite things was always seeing the "jumbos," the most recent official photos of the President on the walls. I am super curious as to how the Oval looks now, but I can't stand the thought of seeing pictures of Trump all over the walls so I haven't been in any hurry to go. I think I'll just keep my good memories alive!

And if it matters, I did vote for him once, just so it's out there I am not, nor was I ever, anti-Obama. ....what everyone else said about him being a better speaker, no scandals etc. And in contrast to Trump, I never felt any fear when he spoke even if I didn't agree with him. DJT is combative with a thin skin that is easily agitated and will strike back with little or no provocation. He's unstable therefore I feel less safe with him in control. (so to speak- in control while being out of control?) Diplomacy is defined as: the art of dealing with people in a sensitive and effective way. Diplomacy is part of the job and needs to be used with people you disagree with as well as those of the same mind. Between the two I see one obvious winner. (duh) As far as total ranking of outstanding presidents, history usually judges better than the present but I would think Obama would be seen positively in the end.
