We don't have snow days, but we do have built in hurricane closures. I can't remember how many, but we always use one or two and some years way more. The built in days are excused, anything more than those I can't remember...but I want to say they add them on to the end.

We are in MI. We have a lot of extra days built into our schedule fo account for snow days. I have kids in two districts and neither district has ever had to do any make up days and we have A LOT of missed days generally, because most schools will call it if it's too cold or back roads are too icy, too. In fact, it seems we've had more cold or ice days than actual snow days the last few years. Oh yeah, Maybe three years ago, they did tack on an extra five minutes onto the school day the last few months in my younger kids' district, because they used up all their allotted days. I believe the plan had to be ok'd by the state. The last few MI winters have been mild and as a result few missed days. Of course, they don't let them out of school early if they don't use all their allotted snow days. We are in MI also and 4-6 years ago we had so many snow days they took away one professional development day, tacked one on to the end of the year, and got 'excused' from the state for making up 1 or 2 days. I remember because it messed up an annual trip to Cedar Point on the day after school gets out dds go on. Our district builds in 5 or 6 days and we do not get them back if they aren't used.

Probably around the time you are talking about we went over as well- by a few days even, but we never had to make up. I'm thinking at that time all three kids were in the same district and IIRC the district received some kind of waiver from the state. I was told MI schools had to choose whether they wanted to report in hours OR days back around the time they pushed the start of the school year back. Our district chose hours and added 5 extra mins a day on day and that helped make up the difference. Not sure how true that is... It came from a teacher but you know how rumors go. I think maybe schools report by hours AND days now in MI. Again, I might be wrong.

We live in the middle of the USA. I think our district allows for 2 days before we have to make them up.
Then, we have two days off in addition to spring break. If we go over the 2 allotted days, then they take from these two days off before spring break.
Then, If we go over that, they add days to the end of the school year. We don't get a ton of snow, but sometimes ice. So far, since my girls have been in school, we haven't had to use them.

I'm in New England. We have five days allotted for snow days. If we use less than that, it shortens the school year. Any more than that extends it. We've already used all of them. This. I'm in MA and we've used only 3 days thus far.

We have designated days on the school calendar that say weather make up day/holiday, so you know from the beginning of the year which days will be the makeup days of there are snow days. If there are more snow days than make up days the district can ask the state to excuse days. Spring Break is never used as make up. This is how our school does it too. My kiddos will be in school on Monday as it's being used as a make up day.
