Two for me this week:
Longbourn (Baker): A retelling of Pride and Prejudice from the perspective the downstairs staff. I really enjoyed it. Yes, it's predictable because it follows the plot of Pride/Prejudice (with a few twists), but I became very fond of the characters. If you never read Pride/Prejudice, it might not be quite as fun. The author assumes you know the Bennet family and their idiosyncrasies.
The Underground Man (Jackson) A fictionalized account of the life of the Duke of Portland. The story unfolds thru his journal enteries. Wonderful point of view novel because he is quite eccentric and a hypochondriac. You do have laughs at his expense but also a lot of compassion for him. Very good read.

Thank you to the pea who recommended The storied life of A.J Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin. This was a great story. I really enjoyed the pace of the book - it could have gotten bogged down in so many issues but thankfully didn't. It was funny, honest, sad and had a few surprises. If you love books or bookstores you might like this one. I'm reading this right now for my book club. I like the mini book review that preface each chapter.

Glad to see a couple of good reviews for Landline. I got a sample on my kindle and it felt a bit whiney which was so disappointing after the brilliant Eleanor and Park. I will give it another try.

I finished What Alice Forgot, If I Stay and Thirteen Reasons Why.
I loved What Alice Forgot, If I Stay was just o.k and Thirteen Reasons Why kinda left me wondering where to rest of it was. I am reading Sharp Objects now I'm reading Sharp Objects right now, too! I'm liking it so far. I've read her other two books and enjoyed them, so I thought I'd give this one a try. She has a knack for writing about dark subject matter...and I eat that stuff up in my "reading world"! This week I also finished The Light Between Oceans and Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?. I really enjoyed The Light Between Oceans. I think many of the peas have read it already. Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me was a fun, light read. My husband and I have been watching The Office on Netflix, and I wanted something fluffy to read, so it fit the bill. Also finished 11/22/63 on audio. Really liked this one, too! I was surprised that it was 2/3 of the way through the book before the JFK stuff really started to be the main focus. It was a great story, though!

I am still reading Teh Shell Seekersand enjoying it very much!Oh one of my all time faves! September is also excellent. Read ALL FALL DOWN by Jennifer Weiner. Story of a young mother's addiction to pills. Fast read, but really held my attention. Another good one if you like her writing. Also read THE HURRICANE SISTERS by Dorothea Benton Frank. Excellent, fluffy beach read.

I read If I Stay and thought it was okay. I also read Colleen Hoover's latest, Ugly Love. It was good in that it kept me interested in the story and I had a hard time putting it down. But I would describe it as a modern day bodice-ripper - it was good for what it was but it's certainly not going to win a Pulitzer.

I've been reading 1927 by Bill Bryson. I have learned a lot of historical details of events that took place during that year and decade that I didn't know, or knew very little about. I loved the book when I first started reading it but getting through the last 1/3 feels like a chore so I don't think I'm going to finish reading it.

It's been a busy couple of weeks...
I read Carl Hiaasen's Bad Monkey - fun, light, snarky fun. Also The Secret Lives of Bees - totally not my style but I enjoyed it. I started a new thriller series - Alex Berensen's The Faithful Spy - about a spy who infiltrates Al Queda prior to 9/11 and has trouble re-assimilating afterward. Pretty good, looking forward to the rest of the series. And finally Heather Gudenkauf's One Breath Away - I wasn't impressed. It seems like people love it or hate it - I didn't love it.
Just started Maeve Binchy's A Week in Winter. Looking forward to something light and sweet. Also tee'd up for the week is Alex Berensen [HASH]2 - The Ghost War.
I saw Daniel Silva at a book signing and have The Heist on the shelf, but I'm holding it back as a reward for when I finish budget season.

I had to hop in and tell you peas that I know Rainbow Rowell! well, knew her. I had her in an intro to theatre class at the University of Nebraska. She was funny and quirky and sweet. We sat by each other every class, and walked to and from class together. We had a bit of a crazy teacher, she (the teacher) loved to tell the story about how she used to be a stage hand on a play that Kim Catrell was in, and that she had to pick the black jelly beans out of her candy dish every day. She said Kim was a real witch lol. I always wondered what happened to Rainbow, I knew she had been a writer for the Omaha World Herald, and then one day I saw a tweet about a book from Rainbow Rowell! Well, there can only be one of those, right? . She told me her parents were hippies lol. I don't have Facebook or I'd look her up to say congrats. I'm so happy for her success!!

I'm still working on the first Outlander book. I like it, but so far it's just going kind of slow. I've been working on it for over a week, and my kindle says I'm at 20%. Gonna take me forever at this pace! I'm 14 books behind on my Good reads list, LOL 5 Game of Thrones books put me way behind!

on my walks i listen to The Baroque Cycle by Neal Stephenson, a trilogy i've read twice. this time around i've been able to completely savor the language - it really makes a difference when you listen to something as opposed to reading it!! i'm currently reading another of Stephenson's books, Anathem, because i never did finish it the first time 'round. it's so very good.
i also recently read the first two Strain books by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan, and i'll read the third soon. good quick reads and it's fun to see how the show is parting ways a bit from the book. (and sometimes infuriating!)

i read Secrets of Sloane House - I had to force myself to finish it. I actually bought for my kindle by accident - oops - not sure how but it happened so I thought what the heck I'll keep it and read it. I did not like it at all. Started Joyland a few days ago and as always S. King does not disappoint! One more post and I'll be a "throbbing member"

I gave it 4.5/5 stars *but* it's not intense, heavy, award-winning reading. I picked it up looking for steamy fluff and that's exactly what I got.

I read two last week: How To Kill A Rock Star by Tiffanie DeBartolo4/5 This book is high on my list of good reading. It's mainly a love story between Paul and Eliza but it's not simple by any means. Filled with wit & wonder, it's a story about a relationship that is new and easy and then it becomes intricate and complicated. It's drawn-out and forever, spiraled into itself until it's so tangled and knotted that it cannot become undone, even when it seems it should have ended. I saw another reviewer call the characters "human" and that's the perfect way to describe everyone in this book. There was nobody unlikable, even if at times, they *%^!ed up. Everyone played an integral part of the story. Everyone was human, beautifully human. They were like real-life friends. Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover4.5/5* (See my disclaimer in my post above. I read this book in two sittings (would have finished it in one but it was already 3am. Hated to stop!) After my last string of recently read books, I was looking for something magical and young. One of those take-me-away kind of stories. This fit the bill perfectly. It won't be for everyone. The main female character, Tate, (really disliked her name but oh well) kind of comes across a bit like Anastasia Steele at times. But I picked up the book wanting this, so I enjoyed it. What I was not expecting were the tears falling from my eyeballs toward the end of the story! The main male character, Miles, is amazing. <3 If you are looking to read about love & honesty in a new adult type of setting, look no further! Right now I am reading The Girl Who Chased The Moon by Sarah Addison Allen and Uncovered by Emily Snow.
