Pia thinks she's an outside dog, I think that's the Akita in her, but as I mentioned in the AZ heat thread I don't let her go out there and sit like she does in the evening it's still too hot. If it's too hot for our feet it is for theres. She goes to the vet on Thurs for shots and nail trimming I'm going to have them check her pads they look rough already. Even our so called 'grass' is too hot.She does like icecubes! And the pool, it just needs to get clean right now. But she usually sits on the steps. She's swimmer too. I'm sure you have already been to the vet, but mushers secret or even coconut oil is great for their paw pads... I'll cuddle with our dog in the evening about once a week and just rub the oil in his pads for him. Took him a while to relax and allow me to do it consistently.

Dogs need their fur to stay cool! Do not shave your dogs in the summer! We go around and around with this with our snow dogs/northern breeds So many people do not realize that the double coat is like insulation, warm in the winter and cooler in the summer. And our Samoyeds have pink skin so they can sunburn and overheat I know people that live in Florida, Arizona, California successfully with their Samoyeds/Malamutes/Huskies and they do not shave them. They do have fans and A/C, but we have that for our dogs even in Washington

Don't forget to fill their water bowls every day. I do mine at night before bed, so I am not rushing in the morning.

Gail, I love that you post these kinds of warnings/helpful suggestions each summer/holiday season for our pets. Thank you for doing that.
Riker is a "wherever we are" dog. Inside or outside doesn't seem to matter to him.
It's hot here right now. Not as hot as you all get it but for us, it's damned hot. We're walking him in the morning and evenings and not during the day.

Thank you for this thread!
My doodle is 11 1/2 and is not tolerating the heat well at all. It's actually an issue for both of since she is my service dog. I am very lucky that my husband is able to run errands for me if I can't get out because it is too hot for my dog Phoenix. However if you know someone who has an older service dog, who is on their own, I would encourage people to ask if they need help in case they are in the same situation.
It's great to see people on this board who love their animals so much and want to help others too. You are the best!
