Its hard to say what you would do in that situation but glad it was a good turnout. Scary! I just saw a commercial for the app, wondered how well it worked. I hope it keeps people safe.

Glad to hear that nothing was taken.
I have been suggesting something like that to DH. I'm going to show him your post.

Wow!
We installed the ring doorbell last year and have enjoyed it. Can't believe they put tape over the camera part.
We had someone ring our bell when I was home alone with dd 8. The guy said he was from the gas company and needs to come through our house to measure our metre in the yard. I tell him we've lived here for 6 years and no one has ever needed to come through our house because our metre is viewed by the lane. He asks about 4 more times very insistently. I refuse. I didn't even open the door. I was yelling through it. I should have used ring to view him but I was caught off guard and didn't think of it.
He eventually left.
Last summer there was a home invasion on my mom's street where the guy said he was from th gas company so I knew better than to open the door.
I called th gas company and they said I wasn't due for a metre measure for 2 weeks. They sent me the schedule for measuring so I'd know when to expect someone in the lane. I also called and reported it to police.

Sorry this happened to you. I've been thinking about one of those Ring doorbells. The more stories I hear like yours, the more sense it makes. Definitely go to the police and let them know what happened. My DH works nights and leaves the neighborhood after 10pm. One night, he saw a couple kids dressed in all black walking through our neighborhood, then a third came walking out between two cars parked in a driveway. He called the non-emergency line and reported it. The officers had been looking for those kids for a couple of weeks and got them the night DH called. They'd been going through the subdivisions around us and stealing from cars. They wouldn't break glass, just walk up the driveway, try for an unlocked door and take from the open cars. Your report will let the officers know that they are looking for a male-female team of two, that they ring the bell, then put a piece of tape over the camera when they can, and use window wells to get into the house. As for your window wells, have you tried one of the custom window well cover makers? They offer different products, including ones made of aluminum. They might be able to make something lightweight for you, or one that splits in half so that you're only having to lift half of the cover at a time. windowwellexperts.com/window-well-covers/?gclid=Cj0KEQjwy4zLBRCOg6-4h6vs3cUBEiQAN-yzfqZbrLmBe1ECwfGB-GfNKyciEu99xXHPFj1CLQfrVqAaApcZ8P8HAQ

Gosh, I'm glad everyone is ok!
Yes the police want to know. Why don't you just call them. Schedule them to come to your home when your dh is home.
**Don't forget to take the tape off the camera....although I'd leave it for the police to see.

I would have peed my pants if I saw someone climbing out of my window. That must have been a frightening experience!

I had to Google "window well covers LOL! We don't have those here so i had no idea.
Lots of people in my Nextdoor group post pics from their home security cameras. I have to say that the Nest camera is by far the clearest out of all the postings. The detail is amazing.
