Is it fun for folks that don't ride? Anyone been there at Christmas time? I have two sons in college and a 7th grader, so that may be the only time other than the steamy summertime. Thanks!

For Harry Potter fans, there is a ton to see and do besides the rides. The rides also have really great queues that you could walk through, even if you don't ride. It is, of course, more fun to ride, but I know some folks have trouble with movie screens and spinning - Universal's rides are not friendly for those folks. Do your kids have a break in October? With kids that age, I might try to hit Universal during Halloween Horror Nights, provided everyone can handle scary.

Hi and thanks for your reply....I've heard it's not big-people friendly and my 22 y/o DS is 6'2/260lbs., so he might not be able to fit. I don't ride for the reasons you mentioned with spinning and strange lights (I get migraine associated vertigo), so I'm cool to walk around while everyone else rides. Good to know there are great queues to see on foot. My boys have different Fall Break schedules unfortunately. They would like the Halloween Horror Nights.

My coworker just went with her family and said the immersive experience is like going to a whole other country and it's done so well you would have a blast without riding a single ride.

The rides vary with what you can take. If you can't take something on a ride, signs will let you know and you will be given free use of the lockers. We sent someone to get in line while the other one put stuff in the lockers. I refuse to let people line jump when they do this, so be warned that the locker person may not find the rest of the group. Guess you would have had an argument with my group since we following the staff rules. The staff kept announcing that only one person should go to the lockers and they would be able to catch up with the group.

When we went the staff told people to have one person go to the locker, but the rest of the group was supposed to wait for that one person and then joined the line. FTR i would probably not say wanting if it had just been starting out, but rather after we'd been in line for 30 minutes and were nearing the front.

We went January 13th. It was perfect. The weather was in the 60's and the crowds were manageable. You would think the crowds would have been non existent, but 1/2 of Brazil was out for a school break. It is great for people that don't ride. So much to see. Some of the rides are quite tame and it is more like sitting in a metal box and having the box move a little while 3-D pictures go zooming past you. There actually aren't a ton of rides in either park. It is mostly the scenery, stores, and shows all around.

I have ridden at that weight and shorter, and I don't think 6'2" is tall enough that the shoulders will be a problem.

For Forbidden Journey, people who are concerned they might not fit, should sit in either the outer two seats on the magical bench. They are a little bigger than the two inner seats. They also have a test seat outside, and there is one inside that they will pull people aside to check if they think it will be a problem. My Dad lives in Orlando, so I have been at Universal several times during Christmas. This year, for the first time, the Wizarding Worlds of Harry Potter WILL be decorated for the holidays, and they will have a projection show on Hogwarts Castle. The park does get busy. We always try to be there 30 minutes before park opening. They will let guests into the front part of the park where the main store is. About 10 minutes before, they will start letting people into the guest areas. After 10 AM the rides get substantially busier. So if the park opens at 8 you have 2 hours to cram in as much as you can. So do rides first, shows when it's busy. The park will start emptying out in the evening to do a few rides too.

I've been twice just for Harry Potter and you're all making me want to go again! DH won't go along with it though. He goes someplace once and he's marked it off for good. Except his Mom's house. Never gets tired of being spoiled by her. LOL
Maybe I should plan a girls only trip.

You can do the HP worlds in a day depending on how crowded it will be. We rode everything we wanted to ride but did not ride the "big" HP roller coaster. Can't remember the name.. You MUST try the butterbeers. There were three of us and we tried all of them. I enjoyed them all but loved the frozen one and I usually don't care for frozen drinks. You also must do the wand ceremony at Olivander's. My 17 dd got picked for the ceremony and we really loved that!! She did buy a wand, too. It was kind of fun to go cast spells around the parks but probably wouldn't do that again. My biggest tip.... minimize what you carry into this park. For more of the rides, you have to store your belongings in a locker and the locker rooms are a NIGHTMARE!!! They will accept credit cards at least. They just don't have a lot of space in them. Just let one person manage the locker situation unless you have a lot of stuff. There is just not enough room in those spaces. I almost had an anxiety attack for real. Bottom line, this would be a good day to leave the big camera at home and wear shorts with lots of pockets. I did have my big camera because I wanted those cool pics of Gringott's, etc. It was quite a walk from the entrance of the park to the HP worlds so be sure you are wearing comfy shoes. You will also need park hoppers because there are two worlds you can visit. We didn't do anything else at Universal so it was a lot of money to spend I thought but we did enjoy it. Oh gosh we were going to carry a backpack with snacks, water and then put our big camera in it when we rode rides. My husband was just planning on holding the backpack in between his feet or in his lap on the ride can you take your packs on the rides? We didn't have issues with the lockers. We carried the wand, large camera and backpack and it fit in the locker. Most of the rides they do not want any extra items on and there really isn't room especially when feet dangle.

We went last year. Dh had to put his backpack in a locker but I was allowed to take my smallish, crossbody lesportsac on all of the rides. It hooked over me, didn't affect any seatbelt / restraint and wasn't at risk of fallinf off. Dh didn't pay for the lockers (I don't know why someone was talking about credit cards in the locker rooms) and there were no line ups / no locker issues. We were there in May so maybe that is why??
We arrived 30 min before opening. 10 min after we got there we were allowed into the main gate. Everyone settled closer to the big HP ride. When the barricade went down everyone ran. Literally. I grabbed hold of both girls because I didn't always them to get hurt while we flew to the ride. We waited 10 min the first time. Then went back and waited 15 min. Little dd wouldn't go again so I waited with her. When Dh and older dd got back from riding again neither of them would go with me again. They both felt sick. I was on the verge of sick. So we left there.
I'm the mean mom who wouldn't buy my girls a school cape. They were so expensive. Some people there were buying the patches to sew onto imitation capes at home. Good idea!!
We did the wand experience. Dd was picked. Was so cute. Then we were allowed to buy her wand for $50! It is a piece of wood! The interactive wand experiences around the park are neat except there is a line up to use your wand so you basically watch everyone else use their wand while you're waiting and then you go up and use your wand when it's your turn - but there are no surprises because you've already watched what happens 25-50 times while you were waiting.
The candy store was cool. The butter beer was gross. We bought some because we are major Harry fans and had to try but couldn't finish.
The main ride was amazing. Unfortunately it made me a bit sick but if I went again I'd go on it again. Just to see how the technology works and to experience it - for a fan - was cool. If you' suffer from motion sickness at all, be warned.
