We have cable internet and use the modem that the cable company set up. The problem is that the signal doesn't reach the whole house. It is not that the house is big at all, we can't even get a signal in the family room that is right below the room that houses the modem.
I have looked at range extenders but someone else suggested that we hook up another modem to the existing one - we have one already so that would mean less money to spend. I have used a range extender and it is pretty easy to hook up but I like the idea of not spending any money. I just don't know how to set up a second modem - the instructions I have found so far assume you know a lot of terms that I don't!
If any one can explain it to me in really easy steps, I would be very grateful! Or if it is just better to get the extender, I'll do that.

If you hook up a second modem, you are going to have 2 SSDI numbers to connect to do different systems, aren't you? An extender would seem to make more sense and cause less issues.

I'm no expert but are you talking about a modem or a wireless router? I know sometimes a modem contains a router. Have I confused you enough?

You are asking about the wrong device. You connect a wireless router to a modem in order to use wi-fi in your house ( router v. modem). I don't know anything about using two routers together though.

We have a modem from the phone company. Hooked to it is a wireless router we bought or we could have gotten it from the phone company too. There are different levels of routers available. Some have a larger transmission area.

See how lost on this stuff I am?? Yes I meant router. And hooking two routers together. And I think the answers here have made the choice much clearer - going the easy route and getting the extender!!

I just purchased a new router because the old one wasn't carrying the signal to my second floor. I decided on a new router rather than an extender because the first router was at least five years old.

We just did this a few days ago! We have U-verse and the crappy router they included with it. We've had issues with range (small) and speed (glacial). I went and bought a better router, plugged it into the modem and set it up, and our internet is smokin'! LOL I had to leave the original router because the wireless cable box downstairs has to run off that one, but all our computers and devices now run off the new router. The cable company's modem had more than one ethernet plug on it so this wasn't a problem. Finally I have usable internet in my office on the other side of the house!
All I needed was the new router and a laptop with an ethernet cable to temporarily hook up to the new router to configure it. Done in five minutes.
ETA: If you're having speed issues, the extender won't solve those. An old router can slow your internet speed.

Another problem is when people put their router in a room next to an outside wall. This sends half the signal outside. We had this problem so I put a piece of foil next the router to try and keep the signal from going outside. Seems to have helped. I've got a new combo modem/router from Comcast that I'm waiting to get the go-ahead to install.

So now I am back to getting a faster router... Speed is an issue as well so the extender is out. Thanks so much for the advice!!

We have to pay an $8/month rental fee to Time Warner for our modem. Anyone just buy one? Any problems doing so?

What router do you have now? We have a multi level home and no problems with our older linksys model # e3000
