I take Nyquil...every single night of my life. It works, I got to sleep. If I wake up in the middle of the night and can't get back to sleep I take a bit more. I never pick up my phone or tablet because that just keeps me awake. I've talked to several of my doctors and none of them are concerned about the nyquil, they told me if it works to keep doing it. Just an FYI, Costco's Kirkland Signature OTC sleep aid has the active sleep ingredient in NyQuil. You could try that so you're not also taking all the other stuff you don't need if you're not actually sick.

I take 2 Benadryl every night and if I forget, I never get sleepy. I'll be looking at the clock at midnight wondering why I can't sleep? Course then usually about 2 or 3 pm I can hardly keep my eyes open.

For me, a book that I dislike can really do the trick. For me, one such book is Walden. My apologies to those who like it. When I was assigned to read it in high school, I couldn't ever stay awake when I sat down to read it. I just found it so boring and difficult to read.
Works every time.

Yeah. I'm of no help today.

I have stress/anxiety related insomnia. I can get to sleep, but I awake regularly in the middle of the night with some gripping fear of something undone, done wrong, or will go wrong and brood on it for hours. It's insane. It makes me feel crazy - and you know everything seems worse in the middle of the night when you can't do anything about it. And then I am exhausted all day long.
My mom told me this trick: count backwards from 100 - if you mess up, start again at 100 and go again. do it as many times as it takes. It's boring as hell and works for me fairly often.
I also pray and it is very helpful for me at those times. I don't even go to church, but I do believe in God and I find talking through whatever is worrying me (in my head/heart of course) works well, it settles me somehow. But I always start with what's right and good, the things I am thankful for. I feel like this sounds pious or something and I don't mean it that way (I am wearing a t shirt today that says "I love Jesus, but I cuss a little if that tells you something about me), but it's something I don't do often enough and in times of unrest, it works for me. I focus too often on what's wrong and not what's right so it does my mind/heart good to focus on the wonders of my life rather than the worries. If only I could do that all the time, I think I'd be a much more even keeled person.
Good luck. Not sleeping sucks.

Thanks for all the good ideas! I would love it if I could read in bed till I got sleepy, but when my husband is asleep, I can't have the light on. (He has zero problem sleeping. Sometimes I want to smother him with a pillow. ) I got about three hours of sleep, had a full day, and now I'm on the couch with my eyelids drooping. So at least I should sleep well tonight. I am going to try some of the sleep cures you all mentioned, too. what about a paper white or nook glow light? I can't read to sleep because I keep reading until the booj is done. Not really interested in Kindle reading. I have the app on my phone (I know it's not the same) and on my small laptop and I find it an unsatisfactory way of reading. And yes, there's always the danger of getting sucked in to the book and reading till the wee hours! That has happened to me hundreds of times!

I also like the Acupressure Mat and use it for 10 minutes right before bed. that looks interesting! I have a tough time relaxing sometimes- physically relaxing, I mean- as in relaxing the muscles in my neck / shoulders / back-- so something like this might help. Mystie, I'm glad you got through it okay; hopefully tonight's sleep will be more restful!

I've started attending church about three years ago, after 20 years away, and I definitely have mixed feelings about it all. For me it's that the church I have attended all of my life has had some changes in staff recently and I feel as though the entire feel of the church has changed in a negative way. One of my kids has asked to try a different church and I agreed, but I feel pressured to make a relatively quick decision on whether to officially switch churches right away or wait because my younger son will have First Communion next year and I need to decide if I want him to have it at our current church or not.
I hope sleep comes easier tonight---for both of us. Save

Your phone is too small to read books off of and both the phone and laptop emit blue lights that will keep you up at night if you are looking at it before bed, the kindle was designed to be better for eyes when reading than a laptop or phone.

I watch videos on YouTube. Wood turning sends me right off. Pottery is my latest thing, pots being thrown on the wheel. It's horrible when you get stuck in that cycle of not sleeping/worrying. I hope you can break it and get some rest. I do the same thing but with scrapbook process videos. I find Mercy Tiara and Nicole Jones's voices very calming. I hope you were able to get some sleep.

A movie on Netflix on my Kindle. I don't have to have the light on (like I would if I was reading) and my Kindle is small enough that I can snuggle down in bed with it. Sometimes I don't even make it through the opening credits.

I've read it's important to stay away from screens-computer screens, tv screens and even ebook screens. Something about the light keeps us awake. This is just what I've read-not sure how true it is. I do know from experience that watching TV keeps me awake rather than making me sleepier.
I read paper books "real books" and that seems to help. I do take a sleeping aid too. I got a prescription from my doctor for a med called Trazadone. If I don't take it I can fall asleep but I'll wake up again many times during the night and not be able to get back to sleep, lying awake for hours. That medication keeps me asleep. I've taken it for years with no bad side effects. It's helped me enormously.

I count backwards from 300 by 3s (300, 297, 294...) I never finish. If by chance that doesn't work after restarting when my mind wanders a few times, I get melatonin. 3mg usually works for me. Its in your system already so it isn't like I'm adding extra unneeded stuff.

In fact, my Kindle has a setting for "dusk" or something like that where the screen will turn a darker color... apparently so that the bright light doesn't wake you completely up? I hate it... it is like reading an old, faded sepia-colored book.

Watch ASMR videos on YouTube. I was doing my pea duty and reading all the replies before posting and wondering if anyone had heard of these. They are amazing! They are reverse videos - so watching a tomato being sliced in reverse (tomato slices going back onto the tomato until it's whole again), or a clementine being peeled in reverse. They are supposed to be very relaxing, and honestly, I find myself wanting to nod off while watching them. I keep waiting for a bout of insomnia to see how well they work in the middle of the night.

Last night I woke up several times during the night and was having a lot of anxiety preventing me from falling back to sleep. The first time I woke up, I mentally went over state capitals until I fell asleep. The second time I went over state nicknames. That didn't go as well, because I have forgotten a lot of them, and it actually gave me more anxiety. The third time I woke up, I went with European capitals. The fourth time I woke up, it was almost time to get up anyway, so I got up and got a head start on the day.

i watch documentaries. nature documentaries are great. so are world war 2 documentaries...something about the flickering black and white film. i find if i am "doing" something, i just feel more awake.
lately i have been listening to podcasts, they distract me enough from my thoughts that i usually can fall asleep quite quickly.
what i don't do is look at the clock or stress because i am not sleeping. i remind myself that laying there quietly *is* restful too.
i have had terrible bouts of insomnia over the years. ugh. i feel for you!
