I do check, but I NEVER shuck it at the store. I've never understood why people do that.

But you would only be leaving it after opening it if it was a bad ear - so it's not rude for the next guy but actually a helpful public service! You might be surprised by how many people leave perfectly good ears of corn behind because of a few dark kernels or bald tip. I guess so!! It seemed like such a no brained to me! I just want it to not be rotten- I don't care about a bald tip or a couple Missing/bad kennels. I guess I'm ever considered that people would be that picky or spend that much time with it!

I rarely buy husked corn but I don't check it when I do buy it. My dad checks it though 🙂

Nope, don't need to. We get all of our corn straight from the farmer who grew it, and nine times out of ten it was just picked earlier that day. We've never had a single bad one.

At our local markets (stands) nope--never ever check and have honestly never had a bad ear!
Our local grocery store now have trash cans right next to the corn and you can remove the husks and take home totally clean corn so no risk there of getting a rotten ear.
Neither of these methods--peeking or cleaning can tell if the taste is bad or if you have old corn! 😆

Yes, but I just lightly peel back the top. And as long as it isn't gross, then I take it home with me.

I'm a peeler...but just the tip. I only do this at the grocery store and they are advertising "bi color" which is what I want but they inevitably mix up the bi color with the all-yellow or all-white ears. I've been burned WAY too many times.
If I'm at the farmer's market or stand, I don't peel.

I don't peel/check corn before buying. I rarely buy ears of corn though. I'm not sure why though because corn on the cob is really really good! I can't imagine shucking corn at the store. I am usually trying to get out of the store quickly and I would make a huge mess at the store doing that.

I used to check the tip, my dad always did so I did. Now I just buy it. Have never been disappointed. I just cut off the tip if needed. I will only completely shuck it at the store if I know I'm going to come home and cook it right away, it just saves me from the mess at home, but I will never not buy it once I shuck it.

I'm just jealous of all of you who have trash cans to throw husks in at your stores! I've never ever seen that in any store here. I'd love it to take off the tops of beets so I wouldn't have to deal with bringing those home with my other groceries.

At the farm stand, where I prefer to but it, its 75 cents for one, $3.95 for 6 and 7.95 a dozen. I wish we could get it for 10 cents an ear. Also, I'm in Massachusetts and we get good local corn for a very short time.

The last thing I want is an ear of corn that had someone else's nail (I'm assuming that's what you meant) in one kernel.

I DO pull back some of the husk, each and every time. I love to see worms in there, a sign that the corn is pesticide free. If it's good for the worms, it's good for me and my family/friends! I knock the ear of corn on its side and shake the worm out of there. Once in a while there is too much worm damage and I set that ear aside, but usually it's just a bit at the very top.

Heck yeah, I'm not a gambler. Corn is expensive!
I shuck it in the store. Lowe's Foods has a trash barrel beside the corn display. I don't want all the shuck & silk in my kitchen.

I miss the days of $1 or $2 a dozen corn, as a kid back in Illinois. On a good sale, at our local Frys, corn is 5 / $2, so 40 cents an ear- I'm not willing to pay 40 or 50 cents for a bad ear of corn, nor do I want to waste my time returning something like that to the store. That's why I peel back the very tip to check: for bi-color kernels,ou and to make sure it's not slimy / rotten. (which has happened.
