@merge are you in Meyerland? A friend of mine finally left her house after the water got chest high. She is sheltering with neighbors who have a 2 story. Just next door in Westbury. We are almost all 1950s bungalows so 2-stories are rare. Can't think of any on my side of the street. That's the neighborhoods in which I grew up. Please stay safe and be sure to have a plan if you need to get out.

They just announced that IAH is closed until further notice. They had already closed Hobby earlier. DD was supposed to fly out to Chicago in the morning so that was obviously cancelled. Doubt she'll be going downtown tomorrow for work either since Memorial Drive is now a massive river due to Buffalo Bayou. Just talked to her and she said it is still rising. Apparently there have been sightings of armadillos swimming for higher ground. The things you see here! In all my years of living here, this is a first for me as far as the airports. Certainly they have closed due to weather, but not indefinitely. I know part of it is keeping them available for rescue personnel and equipment because there is a currently a no-fly zone over both for anything other than emergency aircraft. So, yeah... it's that bad.

I could handle swimming armadillos better than the alligators and swimming fire ants that are infesting the waters. Don't ask me how or when it happened, but I did get used to the alligators. Fire ants are a whole 'nother story, though. Let me tell you, one of the least talked about dangers with flooding are the balls of fire ants that float along in the water when the ground gets too wet for them. They form a ball to protect those on the inside and you do not want to have a personal one-on-one meetup!

Family in Manvel/Alvin area: 3 have water in their homes. So far, just inches of water, but......... Those same 3 homes took in water in 1979, but have been dry since.

I'm in Katy and we are still doing good. We live in the country and our ditches are really deep but still overflowing. The roof of our chicken coup collapsed but the chickens are ok. Our school district is closed all week as well.
As of right now, we are stranded and can't get out on the roads as they are all impassable. Thank you for your thoughts and concerns.

We are having serious wind (for us) and rain in SA right now, but NOTHING like everywhere in Houston. I have friends who have lost their vehicles, houses/belongings are on their way to being gone, too. I am heartbroken for everyone.

Watching Fox News they are in Dickinson showing regular people with boats being called in to go in and help rescue people. Interstate 45 is flooded. Dump trucks and buses are taking people off the boats to safety.
This sucks. I'm sorry this is happening.
Again everyone be smart and stay safe.

Watching Fox News they are in Dickinson showing regular people with boats being called in to go in and help rescue people. It's south Texas. That's actually a good plan. Neighbor helping neighbor is the most efficient way to get the most people to safety.

We went out for a drive around the neighborhood during the break, and to see if it was possible to get to DD's apartment. Other than branches down and a few uprooted oak trees, it was pretty calm up here. Nothing open except for 3 gas stations. Even Walmart is closed. We were able to get to DD's by going a back way that was open. Will add a few photos I took of I-10 in a few minutes.

Passing along this info:
If anyone has some free time on social media today and can get this information passed along to people in the Houston Area: The U.S. Coast Guard is conducting urban search and rescue in the city of Houston. If you are in need of rescue, call 911 or the U.S. Coast Guard Houston Command Center at 281-464-4851.
Do not report your information on social media sites!
Stay calm, do not panic. Do not go into the attic, rescuers from the air cannot see you. If you must go into the attic, bring an axe. Get to high ground immediately. Mark the roof to be seen from the air. Wave sheets, towels, to be noticed from the air.

I could handle swimming armadillos better than the alligators and swimming fire ants that are infesting the waters. wait- ants swim??? I can't remember after which Hurricane, but dh nearly died from a fire ant mound when we were outside cleaning up after. There were still trees down in the neighborhood so the ambulance was driving up in yards to get through. Scary stuff. articles.extension.org/pages/55543/protect-yourself-and-your-family-from-fire-ants-in-a-floodYes! Scary stuff! Flood waters will not drown fire ants. Instead, their colonies will actually emerge from the soil, form a loose ball, float, and flow with the water until they reach a dry area or object that they can crawl up on. Floating fire ant colonies can look like ribbons, streamers, or as a ball of ants floating on the water. These amoeba-like masses of ants contain all of the colonies’ members - the worker ants, brood (eggs, larvae, pupae), winged reproductive males and females, and queen ants. As the flood waters recede, these floating fire ant colonies will get onto anything that they come in contact with and are attracted to anything that might give them shelter until a mound can be re-established in the soil. This means that debris piles left from the flood waters or piles of items from flooded homes are extremely inviting to the fire ant. At this time a general, preventive treatment for controlling the fire ants is out of the question. Ant colonies or ants encountered have to be dealt with quickly. During Flooding Avoid contact with floating mats of fire ants. If you are in a row boat, do not touch the ants with the oars. When working in flood water, try to dress appropriately. Rubber boots, rain gear, and gloves (cuffed) can help prevent ants from reaching the skin. If ants contact the skin, they will bite and sting and should be removed immediately by rubbing them off. The ants will only cling to the skin if submerged and even a high-pressure water spray may not dislodge them. However, a spray made of diluted biodegradable dishwashing liquid may help immobilize, drown them. When returning to flooded structures, floating ant masses are occasionally encountered, even indoors. Reports of successfully sinking floating ants by spraying them with soapy water led to an assessment of using biodegradable liquid dishwashing detergent as a method of fire ant control in flood water (Barr and Drees 1992, http://fireant.tamu.edu). Two fluid ounces of Dove® dishwashing liquid mixed with 1 gallon of water sprayed on ants floating in a 5-gallon bucket filled with water caused 80 to 95 percent mortality within 10 minutes of spraying the solution on the surface. This is not a registered pesticide by the Environmental Protection Agency. With verification in actual flood water conditions, this method could be suitable for use by emergency personnel. After Flooding Be Cautious. Be aware that fire ants can be under anything. When debris is picked up, pay attention to what is on, under, or in it - especially if the debris has been sitting in one area for several days. Fire ants love to get under furniture, carpet strips, and old wood to re-establish their colony. Protect yourself . Wear gloves, long sleeve shirts, long pants, socks and shoes. You may want to consider spraying insect repellent (e.g. those products containing DEET) onto your shoes and lower pants leg. This may help deter foraging fire ants from climbing onto the legs, but may not repel ants defending their colony. If using shovels or other tools, spread talcum or baby powder on the handle. Fire ants cannot climb onto vertical surfaces dusted with talcum powder unless the surface gets wet or the powder is rubbed off. If fire ants are seen in a pile of debris that must be handled, use a shovel or other tool to avoid ant contact or consider treating the pile with a fast-acting household or lawn and garden insecticide. Aerosol spray products containing pyrethrins or pyrethrum derivatives (tetramethrin or allethrin) labeled for use on “ants” or “crawling insects” have a quick knockdown and break down quickly. Spray as many of the ants as possible. But keep in mind that insecticides can be quite toxic to aquatic organisms. Also spray surfaces and cracks of infested objects and debris. Come back after the product has had time to act. Fire ant bait products should not be used at this time. They are slow-acting and the flooded mounds will be disorganized and worker ants will not be foraging for food.

leftturnonly -- that leaves quite an image in the head! it's often in these catastrophic storms ya don't think of the critters and how they fair out and all that?!! I remember we took my brother to San Antonio when he was stationed there, they had warned us that they keep the dog food locked in a bin and the bowls up on a stand, because of the fire ants and other critters!! i hadn't even thought of the armadillos!! Anyway I hope you are all safe!! I can't even imagine just watching the coverage! My heart and prayers are with all those affected and hope relief comes SOON!!!
