I was bit recently, GO TO URGENT CARE/ER NOW.Puncture bites especially have a habit of turning infectious...is your Tetanus up to date? Not sure? Get a shot too. The dog's owner should be paying for ALL of your bills (including your vet bills because of course, you're taking you dog to the vet too). Sorry to say but if you don't report this dog bit, it will escape again and next time might do even more harm.

If the dog has no history of biting with animal control, they will get a citation and a fine. If the dog does, then it may be put down. I am a total dog lover but there was no reason to bite you or your dog. My dh and both my dogs were bit by a woman walking her dog off leash. We reported, she paid any bills and there is a record of the bites. If it bites again, it gets put down. The stupid woman shouldn't have had her dog off the leash. She tried to say that my dogs provoked hers. Um no, my dogs were under control on leashes. Hers was not.

Not only do you need to go to the ER, you need to file a police report. What if the dog has attacked others? What if you had a small child with you? I'm not saying a dog should be euthanized for one incident, but how do you know how many incidents there have been? It's on the owner of the dog, not you. This dog sounds dangerous to me. Unprovoked, it attacked you both and did not back off. That's not good.

I would definitely go to the doctor to have it checked.
And maybe it is because I'm not terribly in love with dogs, but I would fight to have that dog put down.
What if it had attacked an elderly person or a child? It attacked unprovoked.
I'm sorry if it makes its owners sad, but if you don't control your large, violent dog, it is a risk you take.

My DH spent 3 days hospitalized due to a dog bite on his arm. Redness, swelling, drainage, hot to touch, etc...should be assessed for infection.

Hugs, River. My pup and I were attacked while walking a few years ago but only Bella was bit. I've always been thankful that the other dog's owner took full responsibility and was as horrified as I was. Both Animal Control and the police need to be contacted. Please let us know what happens.

Go to Urgent Care or ER. They will report the dog to Humane Society and before you get home, you'll receive a phone call from them.

I was just finishing up an antibiotic course for a sinus infection, yesterday was the last dose. I know all antibiotics aren't equal, but hoped it would help. The intense pain 3 days later should give me a kick in the tail. My DH thinks I'm being silly and need to suck it up buttercup. Guess I'll give him a kick in the balls and get it looked at. Well I have to say your DH isn't so darling!

I pray you are at the ED right now. That really needs medical attention. And I am a huge dog lover too but not at the expense of my life or someone else's. Animal Control needs to be involved. Please update when you can.

I would also go see a doctor immediately also.
I have been bitten by dogs twice in my life. Both times were pretty good bites but did not need stitches. Both were by dogs where I knew the owners and both were (positively) current on their shots.
The first one took a good hunk out of my @$$. I never did go to the doctors for that one, but it took a long time to heal because of the location. The second one I did go to the doctor to have it checked and get antibiotics. I was not required to report the dog/owner and I did not do so. I knew that the owners felt terrible and were making sure that this didn't happen again. But if it was a random dog/owner that I did not know I would not have hesitated to report it.
I hope your woulds are okay and that you feel better. Getting bit is traumatic and scary, but I was also so sad for the families that owned the dogs and how it affected them. Sorry you are having to go through this.

Please update when you can. I hope you are okay really! But yes any open wound with a dog or a cat should get checked out even if it's minor!! You just don't know. Even if you know the pet. @river I really hope you are okay! The dog needs to get checked out too, if it's dangerous, that could be scary and happen again. I know you sound like you're worried about the owner and his family is upset and something happening to the dog, but you don't want another situation either. That way if you get checked out - that part of it is out of your hands.. if that helps at all. HUGS! Rest well and take care.

I wouldn't mess around with that wound and would be in the ER getting it checked over. And I don't go to the ER for every little thing.
And by reporting it, you may just be saving someone else's very life around a dog like that. What if he had snapped on a child??? Dear god.

Please go to the doctor right away. My friend was bitten by a feral cat he was trying to trap to get spayed. He ended up in the hospital for a week and was home for another two weeks on IV antibiotics. Cat scratch fever is more than just a song...

If River went to an ER, I would be willing to wager a latte that they put her on I.V. antibiotics, which is why she hasn't checked back.

How awful. I am so sorry this happened to you. I agree with the majority... time for a trip to the doctor to make sure you don't have an infection.

You need to protect yourself!! go to the Dr right away and REPORT THAT DOG!!! I made that mistake and did not report a dog attack on my little yorkie. The dog came into my back yard and attacked her. It was a neighbors dog three doors down. They promised they would never let him out again without a leash...sob story etc. Guess what two months later the dog killed my neighbors poodle!!!
Edited to add.... my dog was put on antibiotic for his bite... you need to go

Please go and get checked right away even if you think you are okay. A gal at work, this summer, was separating the two dogs in her own home and got small bite. This happened after work, by morning swollen. By the time she got to work it was hot, red and a line already started. She went from work to urgent care. Was sent to ER then surgeon. Surgery done immediately. She has had A total of three surgeries. She has had a bunch of PT. Her finger can not bend or lay flat. It is ugly and looks painful though she said it mo longer hurts.
It was a small mark from her own little healthy dog
Please don't take any chances and get seen.
PS. She didn't blame her dog. But from that point on that dog was aggressive towards the other dog. She no longer has the dog.

I wouldn't care if this was a little poodle or if it was a pit. This needs attention. Get checked out, call animal control. No dog should just attack like this. And the dog owner should pay your medical bills for you.

How scary for all of you!
I think it's shitty & irresponsible of the dog owner to guilt you into feeling sorry for the dog. You and your dog were attacked on your mother's property. What happens when your mother walks to her mailbox next week & is attacked by that dog w/no help to assist her?
I too am a dog lover, but health & safety takes precedence before feeling sorry for a dog that attacks.
Hopefully you have been treated at ER, along with your dog at the vet/animal hospital. Why do I have a feeling this "protective" dog has bitten before?!

I agree with everyone that you need to go to the ER. You need antibiotics, dog's mouths are full of bacteria. My son once had a small puncture from a dog, it looked fine to me (no redness or any other sign of infection) until a day later my son showed me pus pouring out of it after he'd picked the scab.
The fact that the dog attacked completely unprovoked proves to me that he absolutely needs to be reported. I'm a pit bull lover myself, but any dog that attacks unprovoked is a disaster waiting to happen. And your neighbor absolutely needs to pay your medical bills!

The dog attacked you and your dog, unprovoked, on your Mother's property?
Here's what I would do ...
- Go to the doctor and get my arm checked out. (ASAP!)
- Take my dog to the vet and get it checked out.
- Make a police report and include the neighbor's info that helped locate where the dog lives and your Mom's info as a witness.
- Contact animal control to report a vicious dog that bites without being provoked outside of its yard
- Send an invoice to the owners for my medical and vet bills
I get it that it is a beloved family pet. But, what is you were a defenseless child with a little dog that wasn't as fast as yours? As you described the attack, I could see the results being much worse!
I could also see that dog attacking its own family's children in the future! And at least if you reported it action could be taken to protect them.

Hope you are getting medical attention! If you still have not reported the bite, think about your mom getting out of her car and the dog attacking her. Or even your mom just walking out her door!!
