We get a lot of slugs on our front porch when it rains. We may or may not see them but the evidence is there. I am just glad we don't get banana slugs like they do closer to the water. They are about 4" long and really gross! The banana slug is the official school mascot of the University of California, Santa Cruz (aka hippy school!). Just thought you'd like to know. niece will be a freshman banana slug in a few weeks ! banana slugs....never even knew they existed until she got into that school. lol

My son goes there and let me tell you, the number of banana slugs he sees is nothing compared to what we get! I live in the SC mountains and sometimes there are dozen a or more around here. I think they're fascinating and have been known to put out salad scraps for them. I've found them everywhere: looking in the upstairs kitchen window, in the washer, on my cutting mat downstairs, and once when I went to scoop bird seed out of the bag, a giant cold banana slug fell onto the hand in the bag and startled the crap out of me. It turns out we had a few living in the box where we store critter food - they even laid eggs, which was pretty cool. Did you know slugs are born hermaphrodites? A couple years ago I bought a young banana slug into my classroom as a pet (evil science loving teacher that I was - a banana slug was not covered by the restricted animals list they created to make it impossible to have a class pet). It was a fascinating addition to the science area. He lived for years and got to be humungous - over 11" long when he stretched out in his tank!

They are about 4" long and really gross! I love Banana Slugs. They are my undergrad university's mascot. I used to find them on the way to class in the woods. Eta: I should have read the whole thread first and realized that lucyg already mentioned our dear Banana Slug at Uncle Charlie's Summer Camp (our university's nickname). These guys are yellowish green and may or may not have spots on them. We just leave them alone as they are an important member of our ecosystem. I don't know why there are so any at the top of the stairs other than it rains a lot and they are very protected by the trees. It is quite cool just above the beach and they seem very happy there. If I encounter one again I will take a picture. I think this summer has been really hard on them as it's been so dry. I see them more when it has been raining or it's cool outside.

My nephew is a 5th year senior. I only know about the banana slug mascot thing because I had to take him to his orientation a few years ago when his parents were out of the country. I was very impressed with the school ... I like the small, individual colleges set-up. And it's a great location. ETA elaine

I must be weird.
I hate bugs and am easily grossed out.
But I think slugs and snails are adorable.
I'd set the iron on its side in the back yard bear mud to give the little guy a chance to crawl out.

I like banana slugs. Not a fan of them inside however. Sometimes they get in our front hall which is not fun

I've watched too many crime shows. I read the title and thought, "Who shot at her iron?"

An 11" long slug is the thing nightmares are made of to me! I did a shudder just reading that!
