It is the apostrophe. House signs. The Smith's. I want to politely tell them it's wrong, but will they really believe me. They are selling tons. Ummm.... I thought that was OK on something like a house sign because what it's really saying is "The Smith's (House)" only the word house is dropped. This is still incorrect. Smith's is singular possessive. Smiths' is plural possessive. If there is more than one Smith then the latter is correct. It is Mr. or Mrs. Smith's house, but it is the Smiths' house collectively.

My last name has 2 s at the end of it. Does that make it like Adamsses? I know that's the wrong spelling but I don't want to write my last name down. The possessive would be Adamsses' house? I can't remember! Yes, you are correct. It would be Adamsses for plural and Adamsses' for possessive. My last name also ends in a sibilant (but not s) so I had to look this up after I got married to know the right way to spell it! For plural Adams, it would be Adamses, not Adamsses.

Her example was the last name Adamss - not the typical spelling because it's not her real last name -- she just used it as an example of a double s at the end

i totally know what you mean! MIL bought a personalized sign with a plural of her/our last name and the whole apostrophe/plural thing looks like a 5 year old pluralized it. i cringe when we drive up to her house at christmas and i see the sign outside.

A lovely article about Yo-Yo Ma's stadium concert in LA showed up in my FB feed recently. I really wanted to share it, but it had a couple of errors in it that made me want to give the copy editor a swirly. One of them was "pour" when it should have been "pore" (e.g. "Cellists pour over the scores..." Uh, pour WHAT over them? LOL), and I can't remember the other one. I don't even want to look it up, because it'll just make me mad all over again, but it was a similar thing. I couldn't share it because I was too irritated. I feel the same way about memes with gross errors in the copy. Some of them are perfectly funny/appropriate/wonderful, but I just can't deal with the uneditable errors. I might start twitching if I had to look at that all day, too!

LOL) As a big reader and someone who prides herself on good grammar and spelling, I will admit that I didn't know it was 'pore'. I always thought if you study something carefully you 'pour' over it. Mind you, I don't think I have ever used that phrase in written form in my life.

Feel free to flame me all you want- I 100% acknowledge I might be wrong. I'm just saying that this isn't one of those errors that set my teeth on edge. I work at a school, and I saw a new sign in the parking lot on the first teacher institute day of the year. "BUS'S ONLY" I about had a heart attack and ran into my principal's office as soon as I walked into the building. "OMG you HAVE to take that sign down RIGHT NOW." Got a special mention at the school-wide staff meeting for that one. This would not be right because your family is The Smiths, not The Smith.
