I've been using chomp sms and it has every feature I've been wanting in a texting app except one. I cannot mute or turn off notifications for group texts. What I can do is set separate notifications for different contacts, turn off notifications for contacts, and customize the design of the app. This one missing function is starting to be a dealbreaker for me. What do you use and more importantly, does it let you mute group texts?

My office uses whatsap but I don't think I can set different notifications for different users. But I can mute it so no notifications come through.

I don't want to mute all notifications. Just for this one particular group. At times my phone is constantly going off because of it. I finally blocked everyone but would honestly like to get group messages-just not a notification every time one comes through.

It mutes the ap, not the group/contact. It hasn't been a problem for me because I only use it for one group; when they get chatty about something that doesn't involve me I can just turn it off until the run out of steam. So it might not work for your needs.

I just use the native app for texting. For group chats I use Facebook messenger. You can mute specific chats or the whole app. I mute the sound for the whole app but allow the pop-up bubble. When I mute a convo there is no bubble either.

I've never used a separate app, just the one that comes with the phone. No complaints.

I use whatsapp because I have friends and family living in Europe, Latin America and the U.S and I can text/talk to them for free Whatsapp does let you mute a specific group chat. You'll still see the notification number on the app icon but you won't hear the phone alerting you everytime you get a new message from them until you unmute the group. You can mute the group for up to 1 year.

I use Textra, which I love, and I know for single conversations I can mute it, and that includes a conversation that is a group. However, I don't know if you can mute the group itself. Like if someone started a new convo, then it wouldn't be muted. I think that would have to be at the contact level.
ETA: For each message thread, you can also change the notification settings. Like vibrate but no sound, etc.

Update. I decided to stick with chompsms and set my default notification to silent and set a separate notification sound for everyone else. This was working great until my last two new contacts. I set a notification for them just like I did for everyone else, but it's not working. One is my daughter and there are times I need to know right away when she texts me so this is a dealbreaker. I emailed the company and they gave me some things to try but after doing all of their suggestions (including uninstalling and reinstalling chompsms) it's still the same. I'm ready to just go with a less customizable app with better features. I'll try textra first and if that doesn't work for me, I'll try whatsapp.

Also WhatsApp here because it's free and easy to use.
