What a good thread. I've heard this song a million times but didn't pay too close attention to the details other then that I knew it was about a suicide.
I'm at the hospital with my dh who just had surgery this morning. He's fine and is eating now. Googling this and thinking about it kept my mind occupied for awhile.

I think what is so great about the song is that it is open to so many interpretations.
I always thought Billy Joe helped the girl cover something up. Maybe she stabbed a lover after she found out he was married and they were throwing the knife off the bridge. Billy Joe thought she would love him forever for helping her, but she only loved him as a friend. He felt used so he jumped off the bridge.

I am curiously fascinated by this thread.
And now I'm going to have to rent Ode to Billy Joe on Amazon Prime.

I would have said the song was about an unrequited or forbidden love before reading this thread. Obviously I need to pay more attention. And I have to say Robby Benson has aged nicely. He was too pretty for my taste back in the day. SaveSave

I have never heard that song ( it is on the instant hate list now) before today. Never again
Nor will I watch the movie.
I can honestly say that if a movie had one of the best pack in it or dear bobby I have never seen it.

I don't think I've ever heard that song. I haven't see the movie or book. The whole thread is confusing.

I loved the song and the movie. Had a big crush on Robby. What's the name of the movie? Is it the thread title or did the movie have a different name? I'm sure I missed the name of it in this thread. Then someone mentioned the book.

Yes the name of the movie is "Ode to Billy Joe" found this discription online: A drunken encounter traumatizes teenage Billy Joe (Robby Benson), who loves a girl (Glynnis O'Connor) in 1953 Mississippi. I didn't know there was a book.

He and Billie were in love. She got pregnant, which was a real Problem because her parents would never let them be together. She either miscarried or did a home abortion ( this is what they threw off the bridge). Having lost the girl and the baby, he jumped. That isn't how it happened in the movie. In the movie, he jumped because he had "been with a man" and was ashamed. She was not pregnant but she let the town think she was so she could save Bobby Joe's reputation. They threw (rather dropped) her doll off the bridge. I suppose the song, itself, could be interpreted differently though The song is the authority.... And that's my interpretation .....the movie came later .... That is their story.... I like mine better.

I really liked that song for awhile and never wanted to get in on the speculation Some things are just best left a mystery so I never read the book, or watched the movie, etc. But the whole idea of the song, casually discussing a teenager's suicide over the family dinner.. they didn't even realize the daughter was close with the victim. You get the sense that there's more to the story and want to try and fill in those blanks. Oh well. Hey maybe we can solve the identity of the You're So Vain character! All these years and I never realized it's about a real person? Or is it. I actually think that's one of Carly Simon's very worst songs but I'm not above singing that refrain to certain people when appropriate

Now we go for syfy movies and end of the world movies. And comic book ones. You will not catch me at movies like gone girl ,war or murder/slasher movies.

It would probably be appropriate to confess that the song from Ice Castles was my wedding song in 1982.

Yeah, Robby Benson is about 10 years too old for the Brat Pack. But if you equate that label with teen angst movies, I get it.
