Good to know! Thanks! I am just transferring my old plates but the temporary ones stay on until the registration and title are complete. Oh, that's odd. Here, when we transfer a plate, it goes right on the car and we are given a temporary registration on the spot at the time of purchase. The new registration comes in the mail a week or two later.

In California all our new plates come from Sacramento. You can have them sent to the local DMV and pick them up there, or mailed to your house, but the local DMVs do not keep a supply of new plates on hand at their locations. I guess that is why it takes us longer to get new plates. And if you get personalized plates, you still pick them up at the DMV and trade in your current plates for the personalized ones.

I'm just jealous your dealership does this for you. Here we have to go into the DMV ourselves with the paperwork.

I don't buy new cars very often. Bought a new to me car 3 weeks ago. I am still driving with the temporary plates and registration. This seems like at least somewhat of a long time to me. I called the dealership to ask because I am going out of town next week and the temporary plates will be expired when I return home and I really do not want to a leave it in an airport parking lot with expired temporary plates. Got a call back from the salesman who made it sound like they didn't know yet if it would happen in the next few days. He did sound like he could get me new temporary plates on Friday if I need them. I just don't understand why transferring the title and getting the registration takes so long. I think a week or two is plenty of time, but I don't really know. What's normal? DO NOT leave it in any parking lot with expired temp plates in the state of NJ. Police drive thru parking lots and verify plates and inspections on a regular basis. Then they sit and wait til you get in and turn the key. Then they pull up & ticket you. Husband got a ticket when his brand retired car plates expired WHen the dealer took too long to get them. And no, the judge does not care that it was the dealership getting the plates and their screw up. You drive the car you took responsibility.

The good news is that they replaced the temporary plates with a new set. They actually expire tomorrow! And, I'm going to take dh's car to the airport anyway. I ended up dropping him off for his flight. I am meeting him there in a few days. I don't care about having temporary plates, as long as they are not expired.
I don't know why they can't just put my plates on while we wait for the registration. NJ does not make anything easy when it comes the motor vehicles!
Interesting to hear how it works everywhere else.
