I've lived in both and like things about both. I have the opposite opinion, I like being able to cook dinner and talk to my husband while he's watching TV or on the computer at the same time. I wouldn't be happy not having a table to eat at though, it's unclear from the OP whether there will be a table in the kitchen or no table at all.

it depends on the space, size/space - some open spaces can be made into "rooms" and made to feel homey, others not so much.

I love it. The noise doesn't bother us and we can watch the game while cooking or cleaning up.

The thing to realize is that a house that is designed as an open plan house can easily have walls added without doing to much damage should the next owner want to remove them. There is flexibility. Very good point. I love mine. Our kitchen, dining room and living room is open just as you described with the bar the separates the living room and kitchen. I don't feel closed in with this plan or like I have been banished to the kitchen. And when we have company, everyone is together nobody what room they are in. I'm glad you like it! I was also thinking of how it would go if I have company and I do like the idea that even when I am in the kitchen I could still see and speak to guests. I never had guests over often at my old condo and one of the reasons was that there wasn't a good amount of visiting room. Most of the square footage was in the bedrooms. If you live alone, your open floor plan might work better. You can put a sofa table behind your couch and at least one end table. A rug under all your main pieces will tie it together. Around here, condos are in such short supply, if I were in your place I'd just have to adjust to this issue if the unit met my other requirements. Yes! I was thinking of a sofa table behind the couch and the coffee table in front with an area rug. It will designate that space "living room" in my mind. There are only two condo/townhouse complexes in my town. The one I moved out of I would never want to live in again. The other one that I'm looking to buy in is much nice but sadly units only come available a couple of times a year. I've decided to put an offer in and not let my indecision on the floor plan affect me. I can make it work.

There's a very small space in the kitchen for a table if I get one that can go flush against the wall. Other than that a table will have to go in front of the sliding glass door in the large open room and I won't like that much as I'll be using that door as my primary entry way.

Here's a photo from the online listing. There's more of the room off to the left and behind the camera's view but it gives a good idea. Attachments:

We have one, and I love it. Me too. Ours is a modified split level with an open floor plan. I like that we are all in the same space (7 people in my family, plus a 21 year old that is living with us for the year) and can spread out enough to do our own thing but still are "together." I will say that you need a quiet dishwasher. And we often turn on closed captioning on the tvs (there are 2, at different ends of the space) so we don't have to blare the tvs.
