I believe it is SDI, State Disability Insurance, that picks up for unpaid leave, not ADA. At least here in California. I used SDI when I was off on maternity leave several years ago. SaveSaveBut that's at your state level. ADA is federal law. Since most states do not have disability insurance programs like California, they don't have those protections. In fact, I've only heard of California having a program like that.

We get 8 hours sick leave per month that accures with no limit. We can use it for our own sickness/ disability or preventive self care along with sickness/ disability and preventative care for household memebers. It's so helpful for doctor appointments. It is separate from our annual leave and paid holidays. We can donate sick leave to eligible employees as long as it doesn't make our sick leave bank fall before 80 hours. We can also cash out sick leave upon retirement.

However, I don’t think a retired person should take their sick time with them in cash. But I do think people should be able to accrue it to deal with real ill Why not??? I earned it...I was a great employee as a teacher. Over my 31 years where I retired from, I averaged 2-3 sick days per year that I took off. Many of those were for doctor's appointments etc during the day. Other than two maternity leaves and two funerals for parents, I missed about 15 days in 28 years for sickness or sick kids. Teachers I worked with took all 11 days offered every year for mental health days or sicknesses. Why shouldn't I get something in return for showing up and being there for the kids? I missed when I had to, but I was there because I knew that kids do much better with their teacher than a sub. I would have loved to have missed a day or two every month, but that just isn't me.
