Oh yes, I have a rookie question for all of you that participate in races. The race I am considering says the following:
Does this chip start your time when you cross over the start line? What I am thinking is that for most of these races, there are thousands of people. I could see it taking some time just to cross the start line to get going. I realize that once you cross, you are still probably in a mob of people that are very close together making it hard to get up to your speed.

Yes typically in the races I've ran the start time starts when you cross the start line. There is a thing called the chrono tracker on the underside of your bib. Also at the 5k, 10k and 15k you cross a line and it marks your time.
For the Disney race at each mile it stated the time but it really only applied to the first corral since that's when the time started. For everyone else it was the net time.
I did have a slow mileage time for about the first 2-3 miles. It was crazy packed and hard to run with that many people around you, stopping and going whenever.

eebud - I did a search for the Hot Chocolate 15K & it looks like it's held in different cities? If that's the one you're looking at, it says walkers are welcome as long as you maintain a 15 min/mile pace which sounds like no problem for you. Almost all race sites should have a FAQ page that lists the time limit or pace requirements. As long as you can meet those it doesn't matter if you run, walk or crawl to the finish line. And, yes, with chip timing your time starts when you cross the start line. Depending on how big the race is there could be a substantial difference between "gun time" and your chip time. Course time limits are based on the last person to cross the start line, not the first.

Thanks for the info! I am looking at this Hot Chocolate race. Dallas Hot ChocolateI read a bit more and it looks like it starts each corral 3 minutes apart to help break the people up some. I assume this is probably normal? The only walks I have ever done were very informal (company type walks/runs). It has also been a very long time. The last time I did one of the informal company walks, everyone started at the same time and if you were at the back of the crowd, you had to hustle extra hard to catch up. LOL Looks like this race requires a 15 minute mile. That is definitely doable even if I slow down some the 2nd half of the race. It is not a cheap race but you get a pretty cool jacket. LOL

I love the Disney photos -- great job!! The Minnie Mouse socks are the cutest things ever. I managed to walk with my sister and the dog every day last week -- yay! We had some gorgeous weather and went around our reservoir. So pretty. This week I've run/walked three days for 45 minutes and it felt great. My hip wasn't bothering me at all. Another yay! I'm going to continue the myrtl exercises, add a few yoga moves, and slowly increase the run/walk ratio again. I like to run -- it always feels like I accomplished something hard. I've been going around my neighborhood this week, so I get a LOT of hills. Going from the end of my street up to my kitches gives me 10 floors on my fitbit.

I love the photos of elaine and anna banana at the Disney half!! So cute!! Candygurl, did you have any photos taken? Would love to see you too. I think I need to find last weeks thread because I think I missed Candygurl's comments on the Disney run. I have continued with my power walks. I seem to be stuck around 12:30ish per mile. Maybe that is the top speed I am going to get or maybe if I had someone with me who walked slightly faster, that would help me get my pace up a bit more. I have been trying to get in 5 power walks each week which means mostly Monday through Friday. I am sticking to 5 miles or slightly over each day because my feet seem to not be in too much pain at that distance. I can go further but I will pay for it more the rest of the day. I did a few searches for 10k races in my area to see if I could find something close by that allows speed walkers. I missed one 10k. But, I also couldn't find anything about whether or not speed walkers were allowed. I would love to try a half too. I know a 10k is not a problem because for a while, I was doing a 10k almost every morning. There is the Hot Chocolate run/walk in February. It is a 15k. Maybe I will do that for my first one!! I have some friends who walk this one but they are sllllloooooowwww. LOL As long as you are moving on your feet without wheeled assistance, and are at the stated minutes-per-mile maximum pace (usually somewhere between 14 to 16:00 minutes per mile), it doesn't matter whether you run, walk, or even skip your way throughout the course. At 12:30 minute miles, you will be allowed to walk whatever race you want to. You go, girl!

LOL I doubt I can keep up a 12:30 pace for a full 15k but if I could complete it with a pace not too much over 13 per mile average, I would be happy. I think I will definitely have to do this. There is a date around mid-December when the price to sign up is cheapest. I am going to put it on my calendar so I don't forget.

Took yesterday off from everything.
Goal today was to run ONE mile. The last time I actually ran was June 10th, serious slacker here, and it was 3km. Although I did not run consecutively today, I ran four miles total (I only kept track of running miles), I walked as well, but have no clue how far that may have been. Really need to be out there by 6:00 a.m. though, because we (DH and I) did not get to the park until about 7 and it was ~*HOT*~ already.
Yesterday, I early registered DH and I for the Great Aloha Run which is in February, we have done it the past two years, it is an 8 miler - Aloha Tower to Aloha Stadium. But I really want to be better prepared for the Ka Iwi Run coming up in October.
I don't normally run hills, anyone have pointers for hill work?
How is everyone else doing?

I've registered for the Hot Chocolate 15k race! So much for taking a break lol! I texted my brother the pic of the medal and he's signed up too:)
Glad they are sponsoring Ronald McDonald House, my sister and parents had to stay there for about a month and it's a great place for patients and families.

I downloaded Jeff Galloway's app and tried it out today on the treadmill. It was fun -- I like to add different things into my workouts. Keeps me from being bored.
I was a little surprised that my "run" part was so fast -- I usually set the treadmill to 5.0, and they had me going 6.4! I had to turn that one waaay down. I went at 5.6 so I could still breath. It felt good. Thanks for the recommendation.

I've been MIA but finally ran/walked 3.2 miles today Do you find that Map My Walk is accurate? It said my average pace was 12:11 mins/mile. I was having lots of trouble with my asthma today so I walked more than I ran.
I love the Disney photos - congrats to all that participated. I looked at the Disneyland 5K schedule for May 2015 and IT SOLD OUT! The only thing available is the 1/2 marathon and that's 94% sold out. Wow

Me and my running buddy ran in the District this morning. I'm the one in the RWB tank. I was planning on 5 and she wanted to do 7 so we did 7. It was crazy humid running along the Potomac, and I hit a wall at about 5 miles. Luckily, she had some candy in her pack that gave me enough sugar rush to finish the last two miles. I wasn't planning on running long today so I wasn't prepared fuel wise. I also have to rethink my breakfast strategy before a long run. I have been eating rice and scrambled eggs which is really easy on my stomach, but I seem to burn through that around mile 5. I KNOW i'm not supposed to try anything new before a race, but I might need to do a bagel sandwich next weekend just to make sure that I have something in my tank. Hitting the wall is no fun at all.

sbartist…this was about the time I was feeling every bit of the ungodly humidity. I figured I better stop and catch my breath so we decided to snap a photo because the view was so neat. The poor tourist that took it almost got hit by a car 'cuz he kept stepping the road.

I did my 10 this morning. I knew I was going to need help getting through the heat & humidity so I changed my intervals. Instead of running my usual 2:30, I ran 2 minutes and walked 1 minute instead of :30 seconds. I was 10 minutes slower than my last run on the same route, but I managed to run all my intervals with no extra walking, so that was a moral victory.

I have read in more than one of Jeff's books that he feels that treadmills are ok to train on but know that they are historically known to be about 10% off. So, it may be that that treadmill is calibrated waaaaay off and in the opposite direction of what you'd expect.

Mine calibrates at the beginning of almost every power walk. What I don't find as accurate is if you look at your pace while you are in the middle of a mile. That seems to be off. But, once you hit each mile, it seems to be right on. I googled this some to see if others were seeing this same thing and it seemed to be fairly common. Almost everyone said they thought it was right on at the end of each mile though. One thing I am wondering is what does Map My Fitness consider the difference between a Walk and a Power Walk? I was logging my Walks as just walks for a long time then I noticed they also had a power walk. Since I am a fast walker, I switched to Power Walk but I don't think it really matters.

I don't use this app, but I do use a Runkeeper & I would guess that they list it that way as two separate activities so you can keep track. Like - say you walked your dog & wanted to track the walk, but didn't want that time in with your fast walks because the pace would be so different. Maybe you can sort your activities by type?

Good point and you are probably right. I tend to only map my walks when I consider it a workout so I guess I didn't think about that. I do try to remember to wear my Fitbit Zip as much as possible so it tracks all mileage including walking around the house. I don't wear it much on Saturday or Sunday most of the time, especially in the summer, because I tend to spend a lot of time in the water.

I laced up my Hokas today and did my first run since the half marathon. It was heavenly to run without the cast, although I have to be careful because that wrist still hurts a lot in a number of positions, so I have to remember to keep it straight with a loose fist throughout the run. I only did 3.5 miles, but that was enough for today; I'll bump it back up to 4 on Tuesday. The Army 10 miler is next month!

I guess I might have to do a bit of a jog here and there to get out of the mob of people but generally, I will not be running. I wish I could run. I have tried but my knees can't take the pounding anymore. I think I wore my knees out back in my skating and hockey playing days. LOL Plus, I am not a spring chicken anymore, as much as I like to think I am.

I love the pic you posted, Kymberlee, of you and your running buddy with the Washington Monument in the background. You look great - I'm sure I'll taste your dust at the ATM. LOL! I need to get myself downtown and run around the monuments some weekend. During the big races, it is way too crowded so that I find myself watching the ground and runners so that I don't run into someone and don't get to appreciate the sites.

Congrats to everyone that got it done today! You are all an inspiration to me, and heaven knows I need it.
After yesterday's, stop and go 4 miles, waking up today was so not fun! Aleve was my friend.
My DH and I planned to go back to the park and run again this morning. Today's goal was to run a 5k without stopping. Although it was not pretty, I did it. My sensor told me when I was at the halfway point (2.5) and I kept going and waiting for it to say 3, 3.5, and I had not heard anything and seriously contemplated walking. I hit the button on my iPod and my sensor said 3.9, so I knew I could finish the 5k. I really could have run longer had I wanted to, but my goal was 5k, and that's good enough for today. When we got back home, my aching body felt like I had run a marathon! I know the soreness will subside when I continue to pound the pavement, so I just need to get out there and do it.
Thank you all for the motivation.

Thanks elaine. Running the monuments is pretty cool. Did you know there was a program called Run with a Ranger that the US Parks Services do 2x month? There are different routes each run and the ranger gives a historical talk regarding the various points of interest that the runners pass. My friend did it raved about it. I think the one she did was about The War of 1812. She said there was a ton of little known facts about the city that she learned. Super cool if that is your thing.
