I watched it and thought it was great! I love the soundtrack and have it downloaded on my phone.
I never really listen to what the critics say.

I don't want to steer this thread to politics, but I know you and I are on the same page politically. For me, it was the kind of celebration of humanity that I'm missing these days. Combine that with just the beauty of the movie itself, the uplifting music, the great acting, and it was just a joy to watch. A wonderful escape. I cried happy tears. And these days that's a welcome experience. Sounds great! And yes, I have found myself seeking more escapist entertainment this year (well, mostly. I still watched the Handmaid's Tale, lol). Looking at my top books of the year, a lot of fantasy/speculative fiction which I normally don't read a lot of. I wasn't sure about seeing this movie-- I love Hugh Jackman and singing / dancing, but wasn't sure about spending the $$ to see it in the theater. But after reading these posts, I think I will spend the money this weekend. I need some uplifting escapism!

I went to see it! It was fantastic. I loved it and am glad I saw it on the big screen. Not quite up there with my beloved Moulin Rouge but close Hugh Jackman is incredibly talented and amazing (and hot) however he will always be my beloved Wolverine

Ok, this makes so much more sense now that I've read it correctly. "Showman" not SNOWMAN. I'm such a dork.
I think I want to see, too but aren't in a hurry. Maybe after the back to school time..

I told dd we'd see it (mostly due to a mutual Zac Efron crush ), and based on the reviews here we went tonight. OMG--I loved it so, so much! Already have the album going on Spotify and am planning another trip to see it again. ETA: While the entire cast did an amazing job, I think Keala Settle was absolutely incredible and really stole the show. Can’t get enough of “This is Me!”

Our whole family went last night and we all LOVED it from the very first second. It's joyful and puts a smile on your face. The dancing was incredible (I saw Alex Wong in there if you watch SYTYCD). The cast was amazing - I loved his two little girls, the "freaks" were such a tight group of singers and dancers, and Hugh Jackman was born for this part.
I think the critics were looking for more depth and seriousness to the story, while audiences are looking for a great musical escape. Sort of like the theater critic in the movie.
ETA This is one for the big screen -- the details of the spectacle wouldn't be as clear on TV, although I plan on buying this one.

Our local critic loved it - but warned that if you're looking for the true story, or want character development, you're not going to get that in this movie. She raved about Hugh Jackman and said pretty much what others have - that he was born to play this part.

I have seen it twice now. I've been waiting for this movie to come out for ages. I admit while I loved the spectacle, I was disappointed the first time. I wanted a bit more. I still vividly remember the Broadway show Barnum with Jim Dale. That musical had ebbs and flows that the movie was lacking. I wanted even more! I wanted more than fabulous musical numbers and costuming.
Just saw it again with my DD, the dancer instead of with dh, the movie addict. I had thrown away my expectations and hopes and just enjoyed it. Especially loved finding details I missed the first time.
I really hope they have a DVD with the cut scenes and other views of the musical numbers. Because DD worked with Cirque this fall, she had several friends who are in the movie, at least in the credits. Couldn't spot any of them. These are aerial artists, acrobats and dancers. They are probably blurred in the the distance but she couldn't tell.
Even though I criticized the movie for every song being a showstopper, I love stoppers and I am thinking about getting the music to sing along with in the car when I need that sort of music!

I just got home from seeing it and absolutely loved it!! Totally uplifting. I am wondering why critics have been so harsh with it. The only thing I could think of was maybe the critics writing these reviews are not people who grew up watching musicals and understand that they are a bit cheesy and that people just spontaneously burst out in song to share their feelings. I grew up spending afternoons at my grandparents and they loved musicals. So I spent many of those afternoons watching My Fair Lady, The Sound of Music, Funny Girl, Oklahoma, and so many more. Maybe they just don’t get it.

I will go. I saw Hugh Jackman on Broadway in The Boy From Oz and had no idea of his musical theater background before that performance. So I will go see any musical he is in.

Saw this today with my husband and 13-year-old granddaughter. I told my husband to watch the trailer before I bought the tickets to make sure he wanted to see it, but he decided not to preview it...I didn't mention that it was a musical. As soon as the first song started, he said "uh-oh". LOL But we all really, really liked it. It was totally entertaining from start to finish. Hugh Jackman was fantastic.

Just got back from seeing it with dh and wanted to report that the peas were right- it is a good, fun movie. We both enjoyed it. Dh isn’t usually into musicals so much although he sings himself but he said he enjoyed it and “ what’s not to love about singing and dancing?” When I asked him what he thought afterwards. Our theater was full and there was a rousing round of applause at the end. I’m going to get the album on Spotify right now.

I'm so glad to read that so many Peas and their families have enjoyed this film as much as we did. DH and DD2 have both been playing the soundtrack over and over. maryannscraps, thanks for the heads up. Alex was one of the best dancers ever to appear on SYTYCD and one of my personal favorites; I didn't know he was in this, but I'll be watching for him now.

I have tickets for the whole family to go tomorrow, including DS’s boyfriend who is NOT a musical theater nerd like my own kids. I will report back if the movie converted him or not .

Saw it yesterday w/the family. We LOVED IT. My favorites were the cinematography and choreography. The younger set is planning on buying the digital album. The story is just enough to move you from number to number, but that was fine w/us. So so beautiful to watch, especially the amazing number w/Zac and Zendaya.

I will go. I saw Hugh Jackman on Broadway in The Boy From Oz and had no idea of his musical theater background before that performance. So I will go see any musical he is in. I saw him in a PBS performance of Oklahoma years ago, and pretty much had the same reaction. I saw The Greatest Showman a few days ago, and would also like to see it again. I loved his performance in it, but was a bit disappointed in the sound quality in the theater- part of it was the fact that I wasn't familiar with the lyrics, so had a hard time understanding some of them, and part of it was I think the sound was set a bit too loud in the theater... I think before I see it again, I'll buy the soundtrack and listen to the songs again, and also read the lyrics. That way I can focus on the visuals instead of straining to figure out the words being sung.

The reviews I’ve read have all been very negative. Tickets are too expensive to go to a bad movie. I’m really disappointed because I love Hugh Jackman. We have a nice big screen TV so this will definitely be one movie I will rent. Go to Rotten Tomatoes and look at the reviews. A lot of the critics didn't like it because it was historically inaccurate. The audience score is 90%. If you love Hugh Jackman you WILL love this movie!

I liked the bit at the very beginning of the movie where they thanked the viewers for coming to the theater to see it on the big screen... it definitely was a 'big screen' experience, for sure!

It was loud at ours (you could feel the seats vibrate with the dancing), but the words were clear as a bell. In fact, DH who normally can't understand lyrics, even commented how easy and clear they were.
