Are there any special needs parents on this thread? I have every IEP for my sons. Do you keep those? I have 15 years worth of IEPs, multiplied by 2. That's a lot of paperwork taking up space.

So far I've kept the IEP paperwork for DD11 but I'm planning on scanning and keeping digitally instead. I don't know that I NEED to keep them at all - since they are in her permanent school file - but I like having them on hand in case I need to refer to them

We call this filing something in the garage. We shove things in a laundry basket and put it in the garage. Hahahha! I have tons of laundry baskets full of crap too! I am not feeling so bad with all of us having similar stories!!! DH does this - he has boxes and bags and totes of papers he hasn't had a chance to go through in case there's something important in there...after this many years, we obviously don't need the papers (many of which are junk mail to begin with) but...

I'm in! We are looking at moving this year and I am NOT moving all of this crap with us! My downfall is books, but the rest of the family has way too much stuff! We are going to purge room by room until we have nothing left. Okay...not quite that bad, but we do need a lot of stuff out of here. The bad part is DH REALLY wants to have a yard sale, so anything purged will be sitting in our garage until spring. BLEH.

This weekend, DH and I cleaned out the hall closet. I pulled out a desk lamp that apparently he had been looking for; it was on the floor under quilts, blankets, etc.
There is a local online auction company (League City, Texas). I started using them last year and love it. If an item does not sell, they donate it to local resale shops benefiting local charities. For me it is a win/win. Between my mom and I, we have made about $260.

I just ordered storage containers. Does that count for anything yet? I'll probably moving this year and it's just me and DS home now so trying to get a jump on it. Box up to save and ditch a lot/most. or I will be posting in December "maybe next year". LOL

It shouldn't be necessary, but if there ever was contention between you and the school district, they might be handy.

What do you do with underwire bras? That small drawer at the top of the dresser doesn't really fit them

I need this! I signed up for the emails and the facebook group for the lemon thingy. We unexpectedly moved the first weekend in December. We saw the new house Nov. 6, put in an offer the 9th, closed the 20th, they moved out the 29th, tented Dec 1, moved in Dec 10. So the whole purge before moving didn't really happen. We have been doing a pretty good job of purging as we are unpacking. I took a Suburban load to Goodwill this morning.
We still have some stuff - mostly books - left in the old house. They are boxed up and ready to move - but we haven't moved them yet.
The new house has a 3 car garage and right now there is stuff in 1 1/2 bays. Of course, it is mostly my stuff. We lost 2 rooms in the move - which of course were the rooms that my sewing stuff and craft stuff lived in. Now I get to share the guest room. So I am trying to figure out what the best way to store and work in the guest room is. We don't use it for guests very often, but on the off chance we need it I would like it to not be a nightmare to make happen.
Add to it that I am due with Baby #4 in March. And the other 3 kids are 6, 4, 21 months. So one box at a time!
I'm trying to get at least 2 boxes unpacked every day. Things have to go straight to a new home or in a donate box. Once I get all the boxes in the house done then I will start slowly tackling the stuff in the garage.
Yesterday I packed up all the Christmas stuff (other than the tress, dh has to take them apart for me and they will go in the garage). Now we have a closet in our front entry that has all the Halloween (we have a lot), Christmas, and Hannukah decorations in it and they are all organized! Small steps!

Just a quick question, are we all going at our own pace or is there some type of organizational plan in place? I guess, I'm looking for something along the lines of this week we work on "this area" or task like going thru Tupperware, junk drawer, etc. I do better with structure!
And I refuse to follow fly lady. It took me forever to rid her from my emails.

We went into our hall closet and got rid of so many coats that we didn't use or fit into anymore. I also got a bag full of long sleeve shirts, pants and sweaters that we didn't want anymore. It's so cold right now that I figured someone needed these things right away. Called our local church for pick up today. We will work on the rest of the closets this weekend.

What do you do with underwire bras? That small drawer at the top of the dresser doesn't really fit them I tend to wear the same several ones and keep them hanging on a hook on the back of the bathroom door, since that is where I get dressed and undressed. I just used some nice Command hooks.

Today I cleaned out our master closet and we can actually see the floor again! LOL I put a bunch of stuff up on our local Buy Nothing FB group and all of it is being picked up soon.

The group here is great for support, ideas and suggestions. For a more structured approach, there is a home organization challenge at Bowl Full of Lemons. She has a Facebook group for the challenge which I did join. However, I immediately unfollowed (and will check it out manually) because it totally filled up my feed! With over 85,000 members I can see why! If I run across another challenge I'll let you know.

Today was a test for me. I'm canceled subscription boxes, and did not buy the Target beauty box. I'm fully committed to declutter and organize. This means not bringing in new things into the home unless they are necessary.
When I want to buy something I will ask: Is this needed right now? Will this improve our home or lives? If the answer is no, I won't buy it.

Oh, there is a blogger that has a great declutter calendar that would be right up your alley if this is what you're looking for. Ugh, can't remember name of course, give me a minute I'll google and see if I can find it for you. Lots of great, easy to do declutter tasks that over a year would make a huge difference in a home. I had DD11 go through the kids' DVDs - she pulled out a handful she was okay donating and then DH decided to keep 3 of them - I think 3 or 4 ended up in the donation box BUT it's a start...

beaglemom Yikes! You are a busy woman. For your guest room / craft room, I would consider a wall bed that is in a vertical position when not in use. My MIL has one in her craft room. It's great.

Yesterday, I went through the hallway bathroom .... Ummmmmmm, there were bath toys in there from when the kids were BABIES! My youngest is almost 13! LOL! When I cleaned out my closet the other day, I purged a bunch of shoes. I ended up dumping out the basket in which I keep summer sandals and flipflops when out of season. In the bottom of the basket were a couple of pool toys (those diving boats/subs and water balls thingies) and there's no telling how long they've been there. My youngest son is 16 so it's been a good many years since they were in my pool bag. Out they went! I helped today to pack up a house for the auction company I work with. Every clothing drawer had all kinds of non-clothing stuff in it, too. All the dressers and furniture with feet had pottery, knick-knacks, and glassware shoved all up underneath it. The closet shelves were so full it rained down like an avalanche when you tried to get the stuff down. And the kitchen? Don't even get me started. --------- Every time I help clean out a house for an estate auction, I am that much more determined to go home and get rid of more. (That, and I have to strip down and take a shower the minute I get home. All the dust, grease, dirt, and years of funk from their houses -- yuck. Don't be that person. Have only what you treasure and take care of it.)

I'm in! I was able to get rid of 2016 things in 2016 but stalled out at about 500 last year so I'm hoping to get back on track in 2018. My DH and I have just come up with a long-term plan for downsizing, and even though it's fairly far out in the future, I know I will need as much advance time as possible to actually make it happen. We have a lot of things we can sell, and we need the money.
My goal: getting rid of 2018 things this year. My challenge: I live in an old house with no storage, so I have to dig through things in order to be able to get rid of things. There is no swing space for processing a purge. I think I'm going to have to combat that by being less of a perfectionist and by making more frequent donation trips. Like, donating half a bag instead of having to fill it up to get it out of the house.
My other challenge: DH. He has a very hard time getting rid of things...he has an even harder time getting rid of things he's already kept through the last round of purging! It's like they've gained value in his mind, because he decided to keep them once. And he wants to see all of whatever it is before he's comfortable getting rid of one of them, even if it's a particularly ugly specimen. Well, with the aforementioned storage issue, I can hardly ever round up *all* of the [insert overly bountiful item] at once. And he never has the time to do it himself. So, they *all* stay. I'm going to look up Peter Walsh again. We used to love his show and it might resonate more with DH now that we know we're going to move into a much smaller space at some point.
I don't have a game plan yet, but I know I need to clean out my office and pantry, so I will probably be focusing on both of those areas for the time being.
Thanks for keeping this going! I hope we can all inspire each other.

artsydaisy can you keep a permanent donation box in the trunk of your cars? Gets it out of the house immediately and when you're out running errands you have it with you.

That's the hope! I found one I love that has a craft table that comes out of it when it is vertical. We need to sell the other house first, then I can plan my dream room!!

OK, I went through two boxes of books. I ended up keeping enough books to fill one box and have another box of books I'm taking to donation. I'm just getting started on book sorting, but every little bit helps, right?

I've just requested 2 of Peter Walsh's books from the library - and there are several requests in front of me. I guess everyone has the same idea at the start of the year, lol.

I just ran out in 5 degree weather to buy 24 more of the 12x12 art bin type paper storage containers—I’m in my crafty room organizing and purging!
Our local craft shop had Rassaog type carts for $25 too!

You know, I resisted doing that in the past because I didn't want to junk up my car, but I'm at the point that I'd rather junk up my car than have space for it in my house so I will give it a whirl. Thanks for the fresh perspective!
