Sudden, severe, steady pain (9.5/10) around McBurney's point (right side abdominal, midway between navel and iliac crest (hip bone)). Lasted 5 hours until painkiller kicked in, then came back 3 hours later until I took another painkiller. When that wore off, the pain returned steady at about 2/10 with twinges of 4/10. 2 days after, pain was steady at 3/10, and has remained the same 6 days after original attack.
No other symptoms except shock. No rebound pain, fever, tachycardia, raised blood pressure, referred pain. No pain under shoulder blades or at the back. No nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, bowel spasms. No discharge, bleeding. No pain passing water. Not pregnant. The pain is steady, not peristaltic.
Urine and blood tests came back normal. No signs of infection.
But the pain persists. The only added symptoms are exhaustion and a short fuse! I'm waiting for a pelvic and abdominal ultrasound.
Any ideas?

Mine did not react in the traditional way.

Gallbladder attack. They last for HOURS and are wretched. The severe attacks cause intense pain and sometimes even narcotics cannot reduce the pain.
If you had pain at a 9 out of 10 you need to get your butt to an ER, and not be trying to treat that with pain killers at home.

Was your pain at that point librarylady? Mine is nowhere near my ribs, middle or side, no referred pain to shoulder blades. I'm inclining towards stones, but doesn't it go away? Until the next attack? |

pierkiss I was at work at the time (at a GP's surgery) and was recommended paracetamol. Then I went to my own GP who prescribed an opioid and sent me home. The local hospital was on black alert so not taking any new cases and the next nearest hospital is an hour away in the next city. I didn't try to treat myself.

I’ll just throw this out there. My dad had gallstones. I told him, drs told him, etc. didn’t want to listen and have surgery to have it removed. He kept having attacks. Finally he had a massive attack that lasted for several days. Mom basically threw him into the car and took him to the ER. Dr said gallbladder had to come out ASAP. Dr got in there and the gallbladder had turned gangrenous! He had a bunch of complications post op that could have been avoided if he had gotten it taken care of sooner.
Do not let yours turn gangrenous. Get it looked at and removed if need be.

When I hear McBurneys I think appendix, but you don't have the associated blood work for that. Honestly - I think you should drive the hour to another hospital and get it evaluated. Constant pain at that level is telling you this needs attention now.

Could be an ovarian cyst rupturing. I had that 10 years ago - couldn't breathe with it, and had other symptoms. The pain also subsided immediately afterwards and other than being a bit sore the next day, that was the end of it. I have to say, the pain was the same and was in exactly the same place as then, but this time was cycle day 23 of a 28 day cycle. Is that possible? Off to Google... SaveSave |

But I realise everyone is different so I'm keeping an open mind. Yeah, it doesn't work like that in the UK. You can't just rock up to a hospital and request treatment. You have to wait for a referral and triage so that they can decide who is most at risk and treat them first. I've got an ultrasound on Thursday. SaveSave |

Sounds like a kidney stone to me. If it is stuck, try drinking tons of water and then lay with your butt as elevated as you can to help dislodge the stone. If not a stone, as a previous poster mentioned, it very well could be an ovarian cyst that burst.

I wonder about appendix too - and I say that because my husband recently had his out because it showed up on a PET scan looking for other things. His appendix was very inflamed, but his temp was normal and no blood work showed anything, and he felt absolutely fine. He had had what we and the doctor thought was about of diverticulitis a couple weeks before and was treated with antibiotics for that. In reality, it was probably when his appendix perforated, and then it sealed itself over. |

I'm thinking either ovarian cyst or kidney stone. With my kidney stones, I'll start with severe pain in the ovary area instead of in the back.

I had no idea I had a kidney stone, until I had abdominal pain. I thought it was the appendix. It was found on a CT scan, stuck in the ureter.

It could be gallbladder. My pain was lower in the back. You need to ask to have a test to run dye through your system. I had an X-Ray of my gallbladder and they said it was fine. I had gallbladder disease without the stones. It was only working at a 25% capacity.

Thanks everyone. I'll take some of these questions to my scan.
So we've had kidney stone, gall bladder, ovarian cyst and appendix suggested. That was basically the extent of my Googling. It's so difficult! And neither of the GPs I've spoken to have made any suggestions at all, other than that they don't think it's life-threatening. Which is comforting! But it's frustrating to have something that doesn't tick enough boxes to diagnose anything, but is definitely there. It will be interesting to see what Thursday brings.

I wonder if it could have been nerve pain, which can be very intense. Perhaps a nerve got trapped or twisted somehow? I currently have a nerve on my foot that, if touched, causes extreme pain. I wonder if you could have had something like this in your abdomen? In my experience when you've had nerve pain you can be left with hangover type pain or aching afterwards.
Is your nearest hospital not taking patients because of the flu outbreak? I was reading that it's causing a lot of problems in the UK.

I was reading that it's causing a lot of problems in the UK. Not flu specifically - we haven't had much of an impact yet. Most of our NHS hospitals are just full up permanently. We have a problem with the NHS: more people going in than coming out. Yes, I've had "hangover pain" before, but it only usually lasts a few hours, or a day, tops. I often get that mid-cycle after ovulation pain. This attack was Wednesday 2nd 3rd Jan. I had the hangover pain the following day, in addition to feeling as if I'd been beaten with a stick, from tensing up with the intensity for 5 hours the day before. On Friday that changed to what feels like steady right-sided ovulation pain. It's now Tuesday 9th and the pain still feels the same. I'm now cycle day 2. Your poor foot. Is that from an injury? RedSquirrelUK, no not from an injury. I have no idea what has caused it. It's not a big deal, I just try to be careful not to let the other foot touch it. It's weird. Man, I do hope you get some answers soon, and permanent relief. Is the hospital situation just as bad all over the country, or does it really depend on location? I hate to see the NHS having problems. I really don't want to see the UK, or any other nation with single payer universal healthcare, move towards a US type system.

What date did this start? I hope it's found out what is causing the pain. In the meantime I'll share my insights on the emotional healing side of it. I looked up in my Feelings Buried Alive Never Die book about cysts asking to release sorrow and stones to release anger. With the Moon in its waning phase for the next week, it is known as an inner time of emotional release. So my suggestion while you are waiting for the tests to be done and the results, is to spend some time and feel into what you may need to release emotionally. I did it intentionally for the first time the other night about missing the connection I used to have with my dad. (The Moon was in Libra (relationships) at the time and felt easy to feel into the emotions about my dad and bring them up and out. I put on his favorite band and looked at old pictures and the tears came and I just felt the flowing of those emotions come through. Now the Moon is in Scorpio (hidden truth) and I've been on a Oprah's speech inner exploration of this hidden truth of feminine empowerment. A big one is about the myth of crying shows weakness. Yeah, that's over and done with Anyway, maybe some of this helps you in some way |
