I think Asheville and D.C. are both great options! I would wait until she's 21 for Nashville - I think 18 is a kind of a "bubble age" there. Not necessarily that she'd want to drink even then, but finding live music or other things to do in the evening will be easier at 21.

If you are driving from Chicago, I would consider a Rt. 66 trip to California! SO many cool landmarks along the way. You'd end up in SoCal instead of San Francisco though.
But I love San Francisco, too. So much to see and do. Have fun whatever you choose!

since I live in san francisco, I would recommend it. tons to do in town, or with 4-5 days, could go to yosemite or tahoe (reservations needed for yosemite super early).. if you want alcatraz, reserve 90 days in advance. great museums, music concerts, great eating.
if you do rent a car, never ever ever leave anything in a car when you park... if nothing else, drop your suitcases with me while you visit the first or last day..
the weather could be 50-70.. bring a jacket for our microclimates the temps can vary 20 or more degrees from one neighborhood to another.. and the fog could be in in the morning and afternoon.

What about New Orleans? I really love the quaint pace of the town and there are several plantations in the area to visit. And the food there is amazing. I know you said no nature, but we did a bayou walk in the Jean LaFitte park and it was fascinating. It's flat terrain and you can see all sorts of creatures and imagine the area 150 years ago covered in swamps. Can you just imagine exploring that! And you know there are tons of little shops to explore in town.

Boston, Nashiville, Cape Cod, San Antonio. I actually really liked San Antonio, (we had to move my brother there when he got transfered to the base there). The River Walk, Alamo.. tons of shopping.. I'd like to go further south to Corpus Christie, with the hurricane though I don't know how bad that area is? Same New Orleans. I've always wanted to go further south. Have you guys been down to any of those areas?
I was thinking DC but that's a lot of Museums and monuments like NYC. lol! but I love NYC. DC is on our bucket list as well. Does she like the bigger cities or the smaller towns? Cape Cod is a lot of fun even if you're not a beachy person!

I found Niagara Falls to be kind of meh--definitely would not want to spend 4-5 days there.
I also think 4-5 days is too long for Austin (particular for the under-21 set), but you could add on San Antonio, which is a couple of hours south, or go north to Dallas. There are some cute shops in Waco near the Gaines' place, and lots of fun little town squares to explore along I-35 between Dallas and Austin.
My girls love New Orleans, but again 4-5 days might be hard to fill for the under-21 set. I've only spent a few hours in Savannah, but would love to go back and explore a bit more.
San Francisco sounds like a great idea for her.

Great ideas! Keep them coming please. We have a family trip planned for the summer to bike around Traverse City and to Mackinac Island so yay that that is a great place to go. Looking forward to that. She went to DC for her 8th grade trip but I’ll ask if she wants to go back. We could definitely go to the Canadian side at Niagre, littlemama . What makes that better? Anything else to do there? Austin sounds like a great idea, too. And we have family in Dallas, whom Id love to see again. The Canadian side has the Horseshoe Falls which are more interesting to look at, in my opinion. I haven't been in many years, but I know they have tons of things to do.

Can’t go wrong with San Francisco!
So many great things to see, awesome food, lots of cool shopping and the public transportation is so easy.
Another idea is drive 101 from San Francisco to Los Angeles and stop a few places along the way.

The american side of Niagara Falls is kind of ugly, not much to do or see there except look at the wrong side of the falls all the touristy stuff is on the Canadian side If you go to Niagara Falls, definitely go to the Canadian side. and take a day to go to the Botanical gardens, and visit the Butterfly Conservatory - it is wonderful! There is a cute little town with cute shops near there, it was fun to have lunch overlooking the river, and then and shop! I cannot remember the name of the town. I'm not sure that I'd want to spend 5 days there, though.
Memphis or Nashville would be lots of fun! SaveSaveSaveSave

Boston! It's a beautiful city, the Freedom Trail is interesting, there's shopping and there's some great food. If you decided you did want to see the beach, you can take a day trip to Cape Cod. You could also go to Salem if she'd be into that.

I was going to suggest Gatlinburg/Great Smokey Mountains. We also enjoyed our trip to Yellowstone.
I would love to go to San Francisco.
We have been to Niagara Falls. The American side has a few good tours. We really enjoyed the cave of the winds (where you get to go right up to the American falls. And of course you have to do the maid of the mist. The American side is more of state park kind of place. The Canadian side has the cheesy stores and shops. They have the wax musuems and the spinning restaurant with a view. We also visited Niagara on the Lake and Toronto when we went.
We are planning a trip to Oregon. We are going to visit Portland, stop at the beach, and hike to all of the waterfalls. There is also Mt. Hood and crater lake. We may also head up to Seattle.

SaveSaveNiagara on the Lake is the town youre thinking of it's a cute little town with great shops - and a whole bunch of amazing wineries!! That's the only reason I ever go to the Niagara area, not the cheesy tourist stuff - although that is fun to try once in a while too

you currently can not drive from SF to LA on highway 101.. it is closed south of santa barbara where the mudslides ruined the road.

I would fly from Midway to Buffalo on Southwest Airlines. Rent a car in Buffalo. There is so much to do on the Canadian side of the border. www.niagaraparks.com/visit-niagara-parks/plan-your-visit/deals-packages/The Niagara Parks : WONDER PASS $ 25 regular $59.92 Save 60% Journey Behind the Falls Niagara's Fury Butterfly Conservatory Floral Showhouse Two-day WEGO Access Two-day Falls Incline Access Valuable bonus coupons BUY NOW Niagara on the Lake is a pretty town. There is shopping at www.outletcollectionatniagara.com/You can also shop at the www.fashionoutletsniagara.com, on Military Road, very close to the Canadian/USA border. I would advise to do your stuff in Canada first, and then do the American stuff, to simplify stuff at the border crossing. PM me if you want more details. The $ is favorable to American guests in Canada, as you will get approx. 20% more for you dollar in Canada.

Toronto is a great city. You can fly to Toronto and explore then hop on the GO train to Niagara Falls which is about 1.5 hr away. Yes. Toronto has it all. Shopping, museums, sporting events, touristy stuff (aquarium, art galleries, markets etc). Niagara is an hour's drive down the highway and the Canadian side has a huge touristy area. However, it is a tad expensive. You could also go to Niagara on the Lake which is a beautiful little town with lots of shops and history.

brookeq you had me at waterfall hikes in OR. We did a waterfall road trip from SoCal to Portland a few years ago. It was a blast. Of course the Colombia Gorge is full of waterfalls, but there are also beautiful falls near Salem OR at Silverfalls park. If you are looking to hit the coast from Portland, Cannon Beach is due west and beautiful. If you go south along the coast, there are a lot of waterfall hikes.

There is nothing wrong with the American side of the falls. There is almost no development and you can get up closer.
The Canadian side is fun, but way over developed

I can't believe I forgot to say Fenway Park! It's probably my favorite place on earth. You can just take a tour, but I'd absolutely recommend seeing a game if you're a baseball fan. There are some great restaurants right there too. I LOVE the steak tip salad at The Cask n Flagon on Brookline Ave, which is right around the corner. Newbury Street & Kenmore Square are really close too.

I haven't read all the replies but wanted to add Portland. You could also rent a car and drive out to Cannon Beach. It's a neat little town and has the famous Haystack Rock that people get there pictures taken with. Also you could drive a ways out of the city and see Multnomah Falls...that was really cool.
