I beg to differ that "everything is fine". It is still Immensely fucked up that people got an alarm on their phone that they were about to die and they believed it. That is wrong on so many levels.

Scared us, for sure! My DH and I flew in last night, were slowly coming round having coffee with the TV news. He has a Cold War military service background. It was bizarre. We spoke to a senior naval officer on our flight who told us about the testing of the system last nov/dec, then we got the klaxons overriding CNN saying "this is not a drill". I think it might be time to go home to my hut in my sh17hole country- our next scheduled stop is Hong Kong though! See Delta Dawn 's thread.

I see your point. The local reps on TV are very reassuring and rational. Where are the bigwigs? White House? Incidentally, my DH is very skeptical about the explanation that "the wrong button was pushed at a shift change". He cannot believe there are no checks and balances.

My DH is still watching as I putter around unpacking. He reminded me that one of the very early reports said there was no suspicion of hacking. He cannot believe the "employee on shift change pushed the wrong button" explanation, for one simple reason- in the 60's it would have been a minimum of two employees, two buttons, two codes, two confirmations. Surely checks and balances have not gone backwards over the decades? Oh, while I am at it, forget about the WH/ bigwigs chiming in to chat to all the US citizens of Hawaii and elsewhere. 45 is playing golf, as usual.

When I lived there in the 50's and 60's, a neighbor down the street built an underground bomb shelter in his front yard. It was all the talk of the neighborhood. But, as my dad always said, living so close to Pearl Harbor, if someone bombed us, our entire area would be a crater.
What exactly are people supposed to do when they get this alert? With today's weapons, I'm thinking there isn't a place to hide.

Talked to family. They were about to go out for the day when the text alerts lit up their phones. They stayed home, packed a light bag in case they had to evacuate somewhere, and just waited. They eventually went to their morning appointment, and my cousin laughed because the parking lot was filled. Apparently not everyone took the alert seriously. But, this cousin has the attitude that there is really nowhere to go if they ever get bombed. Inside, she is probably scared, but she also knows there is not much they can do if it ever happens.

Yes, he was golfing!
Not ok, I am sure there are some people who are traumatized. Mostly kids .. Hard for them to understand the why it was frightening but it wasn't real.

I live on Maui. My phone didn't alert me. My Son called and told me about it. I had the TV on and nothing was scrolling showing this alert. Also, the sirens weren't going off. This would be our first alarm that we were being attacked. Shortly after talking to my Son the alert came on the TV but still no sirens. The siren part is what I was skeptical about. I did do what the TV was telling us to do, however. Stay indoors and find somewhere where there are no windows. Lay down flat on the floor. I kept the radio on which was playing music and not announcing anything. About 40 minutes later it was announced on the TV that this was a false alarm. They are still claiming that someone moused the wrong button on the computer screen and also verified on the next screen that yes they were sure. The reason why there was no sirens was because this was just a change of shift test so they did not activate the sirens. When they realized they had moused the wrong button, they had gotten the alert on their phone is how they found out, they began the steps to issue it as a false alarm.
They have already put in place where two people must verify before clicking the alert button. They are working on cancelling the false alarm announcements sooner.
I just hope no one suffered a heart attack because of this. There were several car accidents.
Because the sirens didn't go off I really wasn't panicked. I thought it was a prank at first but I did follow their directions just in case.

We are on Oahu and the aspect that made me think it couldn't be "the one" was the continued taking off of the big planes. I counted at least 4. Also, some of the local traffic continued, did not look panicky. No sirens on the street, after the cancellation there was a lot of police activity and sirens.

We eventually went out to pick up tour tickets, get lunch and so on. Hawaii is so resilient! Everybody is talking about this morning, some are solicitous towards the idiot tourists (us) and some are just getting on with their day. The one bar we passed is having a "no ballistic missile all day happy hour."

Confession time, peas. DH and I are on our swan song trip around the world. We discussed chucking the good old USA about a year ago, just when we were ready to push the button and buy tickets. I had to apply for a visa, high risk stuff according to the urban legends in my country. We debated "endorsing" 45 in any way whatsoever. We did not want to do it. I think I remember a brief discussion on a thread with our Norwegian pea, miominmio where she was equally conflicted about a long awaited trip to NYC. We eventually decided not to change our plans. I got a visa ( asked for 90 days, got 10 years!) and we planned to do everything we need here before we go off to see uncle Vladimir P. My DH and I has a date at Lubyanka and bunker 45 with a contemporary, his opposite number in Russia in the 70's with a similar job (fighter controller) and a similar life expectancy if the button had been pushed back then. We didn't think it would be a good idea to have those stamps in our passports before trying to enter the states! This morning, waking up in Hawaii, we had a weird moment. We sat and looked at each other as the TV klaxon went off and repeated "this is not a drill" for a couple of minutes, and we just stayed in, watching things unfold. What a wonderful world played as my Earworm. I don't endorse uncle V's politics either but I do want my DH to keep his date with the Russian officer of the same vintage and I want to see Red Square and the Lubyanka. Incidentally, that is the one visa I as a South African passport holder did not need to get. We had a great day in Washington DC, not planned but an accident of some scheduling changes. What a weird feeling when that was the day a very important vote took place. What a wonderful, weird time we live in. What a wonderful world.

The thing is, Hawaii is part of the United States of America. Period. What happens there, happens to the other 49 states and 16 territories! We are all Americans. The POTUS should have been on this like butter on rice - a factual detailing of the incident to the news media and a calming speech to the ENTIRE COUNTRY!!!
Even after the error was discovered, we should have had something to ease our minds.
But he was likely trying to choose between an 8/9-iron instead of choosing which soothing words to send to the world.

Seventy-six years ago this past December, before Hawaii was a state, FDR was on the radio speaking to the Nation with disastrous news, but also reassurance! Where was today's president with our citizens facing a threat? Playing golf!

Not finding anything from dt directly, there may be something I did not see/hear. The White House did respond. We know it was NOT a test, but an error. White House: Hawaii false alarm 'purely a state exercise'BY JULIA MANCHESTER - 01/13/18 03:03 PM EST The White House said Saturday that President Trump was briefed on the false emergency alert that went out in Hawaii warning of an incoming ballistic missile threat. "The President has been briefed on the state of Hawaii's emergency management exercise. This was purely a state exercise," White House deputy press secretary Lindsay Walters said in a statement. Individuals in Hawaii received a mobile alert earlier in the day, reading "BALLISTIC MISSILE THREAT INBOUND TO HAWAII. SEEK IMMEDIATE SHELTER. THIS IS NOT A DRILL." Hawaii officials such as Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D) and the state's Emergency Management Agency quickly tweeted that the message was a false alarm. Just received this alert in Hawaii pic.twitter.com/VCHwRdG9Bc — Amanda Golden (@amandawgolden) January 13, 2018 HAWAII - THIS IS A FALSE ALARM. THERE IS NO INCOMING MISSILE TO HAWAII. I HAVE CONFIRMED WITH OFFICIALS THERE IS NO INCOMING MISSILE. pic.twitter.com/DxfTXIDOQs — Tulsi Gabbard (@tulsigabbard) January 13, 2018 NO missile threat to Hawaii. — Hawaii EMA (@hawaii_EMA) January 13, 2018 However, 38 minutes elapsed before a second alert saying it was a false alarm went out. The initial notification caused panic and confusion across the state, and Hawaii lawmakers have called for officials to be held accountable in light of the incident. Trump was briefed on the incident while in Florida for the holiday weekend. thehill.com/homenews/administration/368907-white-house-hawaii-false-alarm-purely-a-state-exercise

Trump’s response to Hawaii missile snafu proves he can’t be trusted with more nukes: New York TimesTOM BOGGIONI 14 JAN 2018 AT 13:12 ET In a cautionary editorial published after the citizens of Hawaii were thrown into a panic over a mistaken alert announcing missiles were incoming, the New York Times said the President blithe response was a reason to not entrust him with an expanded nuclear arsenal. Following the frightening announcement in Hawaii on Saturday morning, the president was reportedly advised about what was going on, but chose to continue to play golf instead of, at the very least, attempting to quell the panic by using his heavily followed Twitter account to dispute the warning. In fact, long after the warning had been debunked, the only statement issued by the White House stated: “The President has been briefed on the state of Hawaii’s emergency management exercise. This was purely a state exercise.” Three hours after the alert, the president finally tweeted: “So much Fake News is being reported. They don’t even try to get it right, or correct it when they are wrong. They promote the Fake Book of a mentally deranged author, who knowingly writes false information. The Mainstream Media is crazed that WE won the election!” with no mention of Hawaii. The Times called the president out for it. www.rawstory.com/2018/01/trumps-response-to-hawaii-missile-snafu-proves-he-cant-be-trusted-with-more-nukes-new-york-times/He said NOTHING!

Every single person in Congress, and honestly in this country, should be calling him out for his lack of a response. Whether we (and he) like it or not, HE is the president of the United States. It is part of his job to provide comfort and reassurance and FACTS to the people in this country when things go wrong as well as when things like a missle attack actually happen. He is supposed to act like a competent leader in situations like this. To give a guiding voice and plan of attack on finding out just what went wrong and how it’s going to be prevented in the future. Instead, he couldn’t even be bothered to get off the damn golf course, let alone tweet out some mediocre form of reassurance to all if the people in Hawaii who actually thought they were going to be killed.
He has failed epically in acting like a leader his weekend. I cannot even imagine what his response would be if this had been an actual attack.

OMG MOMENT! Trump: 'I love' that Hawaii officials took responsibility for false missile alertBY JACQUELINE THOMSEN - 01/14/18 09:16 PM EST President Trump made his first public comments since the false alarm of a ballistic missile heading toward Hawaii, saying he thought it was “terrific” that the state took responsibility for the error. “That was a state thing but we are going to now get involved with them. I love that they took responsibility. They took total responsibility,” Trump told reporters Sunday.“But we are going to get involved. Their attitude and their — I think it is terrific. They took responsibility. They made a mistake,” he continued. When asked what he will do to prevent a similar false alert from taking place, Trump didn’t answer directly but said, “we hope it won’t happen again. “Part of it is people are on edge, but maybe eventually we will solve the problem so they won’t have to be so on edge,” Trump said. He added that he will “see what happens with North Korea.” thehill.com/homenews/administration/369002-trump-i-love-that-hawaii-officials-took-responsibility-for-falseWE will get involved NOW because Hawaii took responsibility?!?!?!?!?! And when will he ever take responsibility for his actions!!!
