Obesity occurs at a much higher rate among the poor. Some folks might be trying to overcome that by choosing vegetables and lean protein with their SNAP card, but now the government is going to send them cheese and peanut butter instead? That doesn’t make sense to me. This is why I think that all public schools should provide, for free, healthy tasty breakfasts and lunches. And maybe for the lower grades healthy tasty snacks to eat as after school snacks. The key words here are tasty and young. If you get them young and the food is good then they should gravitate toward healthy foods as they get older and they make the choices of what they eat. My district does provide free breakfast and dinner to all students, and lunch to those who qualify. You would not believe the wailing and gnashing of teeth that goes on over that. About 90% of our kids district-wide are low income. I'm not going to say all the options are super healthy, but it does seem to be getting better.

I just can't fathom how this is seen as a bad thing. What are some of the complaints they voiced? I'm sitting here gobsmacked. That'd be like my husband, who has dedicated his education and professional life to helping the elderly through therapy, complaining about something that improves the quality of life of nursing home residents.

Oh, it’s not the teachers who complain. We’re all for it. It’s the conservatives who feel like it’s a waste of taxpayer dollars.

I try to shut my yap in political threads which are on internal USA topics I know nothing about, but emboldened by today's victory in SA, where we finally got rid of one of the most corrupt idiots of all time, I will give my 0.02c worth.
Food schemes initiated here with the intention of getting kids fed ended up, at best, as being wildly inefficient and wasteful. At worst they were corruption filled funnels pumping much needed money to cronies of the top guy. I hope this is not going to happen, but this administration has form, not so?

I was so concerned that if we couldn't even get teachers behind something like that then the initiatives would stand zero chance! The GOP complaining about allocating funds to help someone? Must be a day that ends in 'Y'.

There's a movement to block vote in the Republican primary to get loathsome Dan Patrick off the ballot entirely. The Republican challenger is much more education friendly. I would, of course, vote for the Democrat in the general election, but if I can't have the Democrat actually win, I'd rather have a Republican who doesn't see public education as a giant waste of money. This is also happening with local candidates.
