You asked, so I counted! I have 48 in their original McCormick bottles. And several more mixes and rubs, etc. I keep them in a rack like this on my pantry door. Top is baking like vanillas and nutmegs and cinnamon. Below that are baking powder, soda, yeast, knox, extracts. 4 racks of various spices, then one of vinegars and oils. Ok, before I ready your post (where is says "a rack like this") I thought this was your pantry. And I will say with all honesty that I am relieved it is not. Same. I was scrolling down silently hardcore sipping the haterate.

I have the wire “step” type things in my cupboard and I made a diagram that I printed as to where each spice sits on the shelf. The diagram is taped to the inside of the spice cabinet

I have a drop down spice rack - I love it! I got it at the Container Store.
It holds 18 jars and is exactly the right size for me
Sorry having trouble posting photo from my phone

We use the Elfa system from The Container Store. This is the generic photo from their website. Our top 3 shelves are narrow and hold regular spices alphabetically. I like low maintenance so they stay in their original jars unless I bought them from the bulk bins. The bottom 4 shelves are deeper and taller. Shelf 1: Mixed spices and spice packets Shelf 2: Fats/Oils Shelf 3: Vinegars Shelf 4: Sweetners & Alcohols (like agave, honey, maple not sugars, etc). Eta: I think this is the less wide version they have. Lots more spices can fit than what is shown there. Am upstairs now but will try and remember to take a pic when I go down later. This can go on a wall or door. Ours is on the door, so we lose zero space from the pantry. Attachments:

scrappinghappy, you win! this is pretty close to my method. i like to get all matching jars. i buy bulk spices at the grocery store and put in my matching jars. you do need a few larger containers for a few things, so i have a few larger (non-matching) jars as well. getting spices from bulk is the best way to go because you can buy just a little for a recipe instead of a whole bottle that you will let sit there and go bad. i get my jars (clear with black lids) from big lots. i need to find some that are smaller for less used spices.

I also have the Spicy Shelf, and I LOVE it. Everybody in alphabetical order, and it is so easy to go down the rows and see what I am low on when it is time to make a Penzey's order. Then in the open area in front of the Spicy Shelf, I have some over sized items, jar of molasses, box of kosher salt, etc. My husband was very skeptical when I told him I wanted Spicy Shelf for Christmas, he thought it would be a piece of junk, but it has been wonderful! Highly recommended. But if you put other things in the closet, doesn't it make it difficult to get to the spices?

I put them in the small jars from Penzy’s (clear jars, black lids). Then I alphabetized them on a Rubbermaid double-lazy Susan. I label each one with the spice name and date purchased (just month/year). I like these jars because they happen to fit the lazy Susan perfectly...height and width. This is kind of nitpicky...but I like that each section is 4 jars wide, and nothing is hidden by the vertical bars on the bottom row. I have about 50 spices. Every January I go through and toss/replace any that are 2 years old. I’m thankful to have a grocery store with very inexpensive bulk spices. If you get a chance, would you post a picture of your setup?

Since the spices are all alphabetical, I know where they all are, and it is easy to slide something to the side to get at the bottle I need. If I had a bigger kitchen with more storage, I wouldn't opt to put things in the open space, but every inch is at a premium in my tiny kitchen.

I have two spice racks in the back of two shelves in the upper cubbard. They are all labeled so I can read them when I open the door, I have some other items like pepper and salt grinders and olive oil in front of them.

I have a small cabinet over my sink where I store herbs and spices. I have a few in the original containers and most used and my own mixes are in the quilted jelly jar type mason jars. I labeled them with a chalkboard label and white paint pen. The only one I can think of that is in the mason jars and in the original container for the shaker top is paprika. There is no organization as all of the family cooks. I like to keep similar with similar.

I generally am anti buying more things to organize the things you already own, but spices are an exception. I LOVE the SpiceStack. It comes in both a 30-bottle size and an 18-bottle size. The back row is slightly larger than the front row and can fit decently sized bottles. It won't fit the really large bottles (like we buy Lowry's Seasoning Salt in a large container), but it fits 90% of my spice bottles and then it's really easy to keep the other 10% tidy because there are so few of them. I also pair it with the Erasable labels from Container Store (write on with permanent marker, they don't rub off - but erase easily with water), so it's easy to find the spice you're looking for but also to reorganize if you change spices. www.amazon.com/YouCopia-SpiceStack-30-Bottle-Organizer-Universal/dp/B01ALT7JQWSystems I HATE and have never seen work: Transferring your spices to all matching bottles, whether those bottled end up stored in a drawer or a spinning pretty rack or whatever. Inevitably, you end up with excess, and you just end up having the "pretty" bottle and the "refill" bottle, making the problem worse. (Edit: I didn't read the thread before posting, but I see a lot of people use this method. If you can buy spices in bulk and truly only buy what will fit in your jar, then it will work. But if you're limited to "standard size" bottles for some of your spices, it gets a lot harder because it seems like there's always just a little bit of excess. Penzey's and another spice shop near me don't sell in bulk, you have to pick from their pre-packaged sizes.)

I have magnetic spice jars which I have put on the side of the refrigerator. The jars came from CostCo, and are like these : Spice Jars
I believe I have 2 sets to hold all my spices! Then used a label maker to label them on their side. Used to work in a library, all the spices are in alphabetic order. LOL Also, we have discovered the bulk section for spices and buy them that way. They cost a fraction of those little spice jars in the baking section. Another thing I love about that bulk section, if you need 1 tablespoon of a spice for a recipe you are making, and won't make again any time soon, you can measure out 1 tablespoon and only pay for that amount. Love it. This was a chore to set up originally, but now love it. They look very pretty on the refrigerator, all those colors. Happy organizing! Sharon

Here are my Spicestacks. I mis-spoke, I think they have the 30, 18, and also the 12-jar models. I have 1 18 and 1 12. You can see the spice bottle on the right where it is pulled out is larger - that's as big as will fit in them. I've been using this system for the last 5 years and LOVE it. It's about 45 spices/blends I have stored in this space. The stuff stashed to the right is extras/refill (salt, an extra thing of Basil because mine is low, etc.). Then right behind the pillar, I have a few blends that don't fit into the stack, and then to the left I have the large bottles that don't fit in the stack.

I have about 40 spices - I cook a lot - mostly middle eastern, Indian and French cooking.
I keep my most used 25 on a rack on my counter - the ones I don’t use very often are on a lazy Susan in the cupboard.
Not a fan of transferring your spices into matching cute jars....

We have way too many spices. I use the Select-a-Spice carousels. I have four of them, and they’re all filled.

Loved them, but the plastic didn't age well and the pieces that held the drawers in ended up breaking. I don't think ours lasted 5 years so maybe they're making them better now. I also love the look of the matching bottles but don't want the upkeep.

Organization of spice bottles was threatening to make my head blow off so last year, I bought two rustic-looking wire racks and hung them on the inside of my pantry door and I love it! Rather than grouping alphabetically, I group them by type, so baking types of spices—cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice etc. are together, leafy green spices are together, chili peppers are together, etc.
