I bought our tickets to get to our cruise port city and while I make a game out of SW’s system for reserving your place in line, I refuse to pay for internet on the ship. I am thinking the Early Bird check in is perfect for this, but was wondering what kind of placement it usually gets you?
Have you used it? What kind of place to end up?

When I travel with my husband only one of us pays for early bird check in for group A, whoever is the early bird saves the seat for the other person.

Normally you will get an "A" group boarding pass. Sometimes and early bird check-in may land you in the teens and sometimes it may land you in the 50's. It really all depends on the number of business select and rapid reward flyers above you. I've only heard of one work colleague who purchased early bird and got a B group boarding pass.

You will typically get an A boarding pass but the placement within the A group is dependent on how many other people have paid for the same service and how many business class select persons are on the plane.

I always pay the early bird / automatic check in. We're always in the A group. The extra money is worth not having to check in exactly 24 hours ahead. I just factor that fee into the cost of my ticket.

Always group A, usually a low number.
People who only pay for one person in their party and then try to save seats are assholes and I hope if backfires on them. Saving seats is against southwest rules

You get A group for sure! We’ve used it in situations like yours, where we won’t have access to our phones or internet.

Saving seats is against southwest rules And if someone tries to sit in that seat, there is absolutely nothing you can do about it - which someone learned the hard way on our last flight. She was trying to save a seat and someone insisted she move her jacket - it got ugly fast and the flight attendant reminded them about the no save seat rule.

I love it when the cheaters get put in their place.

We save a middle seat, no one wants a middle seat.

We save a middle seat, no one wants a middle seat. You can't save seats. You hope no one sits there. But you can't save it.

I always do the early bird check in. If I'm flying with one or both of my kids I want us to sit together, and if I'm flying alone I want a window seat. I always get a spot in A group, usually in the teens or twenties. It's worth the extra cost to not have to search for a seat, and definitely worth it to not get stuck between strangers in a middle seat.
