This is almost a PSA One week ago today, I had a massive heart attack, and as with most women, dismissed my minor symptoms. I was quietly hand quilting, midafternoon, felt a chest pain, and hot flash. It was not debillitating in any way. I ignored it for 6 hours, and called a friend, ( a retired cardiac nurse) and she was over in five minutes, and immediately called an ambulence at 10 pm. After a Heart catherization, I was told that I was within 30 minutes of death, and that I needed a quadruple bypass. I tell this story because I am a no risk patient. Perfect blood pressure, perfect blood sugar, cholesterol is perfect. No maintenance medications. I walk 5 miles daily, and do yoga six days a week, my weight and height are proportionate. I am 64 years old, but have not needed any medical intervention except for a case of shingles within the past 10 years. BUT i skipped a physical last year, and had i had the physical last year, might have found the blockages. So I have spent this past week hospitalized, letting my heart rest and having every test imaginable, and chafing at my limits. Tuesday I will have a quad bypass, which my surgeon just told me could take 6 hours. So no matter how healthy you think you are, and appear to be, don't delay any medical check. That is really scarey! So glad you called your friend and that she knew just what to do. Positive vibes going your way this week for a successful surgery and a full recovery!

Glad you are doing ok-very scary stuff!!
Most women don’t have “typical “ symptoms. My MIL would get an ache in her shoulder when she was having problems. Don’t ignore out of the ordinary things! And please, please call 911. As an EMS and fire dispatcher, we’d rather send an ambulance for a heart problem than for a motor vehicle accident caused by a heart problem.
In October I had to call my own agency 4 times for cardiac problems. They were able to give me meds on the way that saved my life.
Wishing you a speedy recovery.

How frightening for you. I am so glad that your friend was able to respond so quickly and that you had the presence of mind to call her in the first place. You were very lucky. I trust that it all goes as expected with your bypass surgery and hope that you are back to your old routines before you know it.
Your experience is pretty much what happened to my ex fiance. He was in very good shape. He was a cyclist and would ride almost every evening and both days of the weekend. He used to race, but broke his neck in a fall during a race and decided to stop racing. We also did a lot of hiking. He ended up needing a quadruple bypass as well. They said he had a 99.9% blockage in the artery that they call "the widow maker" because you don't usually survive when that is blocked to that degree. They surmised that the only reason he didn't die is because the years of cycling had forced new arterial growth around the blockage and was enough to supply just a bit of oxygenated blood to his heart muscle.

artgirl1 I join everyone in gratefulness that you are recovering from a completely scary ordeal. I am in some high risk categories - I'm 60, overweight, high BP, high cholesterol... One week ago tonight I was reading in bed and started to feel a pain in my abdominal cage that I assumed was either gas, reflux, lactose reaction, whatever. But I could get no relief. As the hours wore on I could not lay down, sit, find any comfortable position. It wasn't terrible pain, it was radiating from mid breast bone to navel. I had to go to work in the morning as did everyone else in my family. About 3 am I called into work saying I was in too much pain to come in. At 4 am I showered quickly, dressed, and drove myself to the ER. There was ice on the roads in my neighborhood but the rest were clear. By the time I was admitted to the ER I was starting to cry because the pain was radiating so much more intensely. At about 5:30 am I got seen in a room, and got some pain and nausea meds by 6:30 at which time I was crying that I had been forgotten. The morphine helped all the pain except my heart pain. They came and brought me nitroglycerin because they determined it may be my heart and nitro helped. Why I do not know because my heart was not the problem. OK so speed ahead a few hours after xray, EKG and ultrasound. I got prepped for gallbladder removal immediately. They had also found a large kidney stone and consulted the urologist who determined to leave that for now. My gall bladder was necrotic. It had died and become bloated and toxic. I called my husband while being prepped for surgery when he happened to message me to check on me. He thought I had gone to work but had heard me the night before. I wasn't thinking about anything but pain relief. I felt everyone else was fine. I never had any symptoms until I had that radiating pain. Nothing sharp, acute, throbbing, stabbing, just radiating from my heart down the center. I knew that women have heart attacks with varied hidden symptoms. My pain turned out not to be my heart, but it just as well could have been. It has kind of depressed me to think how things like this happen without warning and that's it. What comes next is quickly beyond our control. Your post is an excellent warning to us to pay attention to our bodies. We are the only ones who can. Thankfully you are well enough this evening to share your story. I will be watching for happy updates to your story.

So if all your labs are good how would they have found the blockage in a physical? My mom had a heart attack in her 50’s and had no idea. She found out years later as she was getting ready for bypass surgery.

I'm glad you got the help you needed and I hope your surgery goes very smoothly.
I knew three women personally who had unexpected heart attacks with no risks or warning factors. One was my husband's mother who died when we were 19 years old. I have often wondered if today's medical science might have offered some way to identify that she was at risk.
