I'm so sorry. I hope you have an uneventful surgery and a quick recovery.
My DH didn't have classic symptoms either. He called his oncology team for intermittent shortness of breath. The nurse had me take him to ER. He had a heart attack there.

I will add to your PSA. My husband is a cath lab tech and tells this story often. He always advises people to call an ambulance just as you did. So many people try to drive themselves or have a family member drive them. Do NOT do this. The point of taking the ambulance is that they can assess your medical needs and call the cath lab team and have them on the way to the hospital. You are delaying precious time when you do not take an ambulance. He has also seen people drive themselves and then have a massive cardiac event and die while either driving or in the parking lot of the hospital. So...I am very thankful that you took the ambulance. February is almost upon us and is the official month for heart health education for women. A woman's heart attack symptoms are very different from a man's. I took a CPR class several years ago. It was the fire dept EMTs teaching it. One thing they mentioned about calling 911 is that they could get to you in 6 minutes and start working on you. Fortunately when my mom needed medical care, that info was fresh in my mind and we called. artgirl1, thank you so much for taking the time to post this PSA. I have an appt to make that I put off making last week. Hope your surgery goes well, and your recovery even better!

Best wishes for your surgery and speedy recovery. The PSA here is to always take chest pain seriously...in some ways specific symptoms don't really matter because no calling a friend, googling etc will be able to tell you if it is a heart attack or not, the ONLY way to work out the difference between a serious cause of chest pain and a minor one is by a doctor & with the equipment available in a hospital. Most women don’t have “typical “ symptoms. This isn't really true. Some women may not have typical symptoms, but not "most". The problem is inadequate knowledge about the symptoms. Many women do have typical symptoms, the problem is that what a lot women think a heart attack feels like is not accurate. They think that like on TV they will be gripping their chest be in horrible pain and fall to the floor. The reality is much more like the OP, mild chest pain, hot flush/cold sweat, probably feeling "not quite right" but it doesn't go away. So they convince themselves it can't be their heart & they wait 6hrs before telling anyone. Women have the symptoms but they often don't recognise that they are significant. Pain (or discomfort) in the chest/jaw/back/neck/arms (any combination) that lasts more than 5 minutes or comes and goes, coupled with (any of) nausea, light-headedness, vomiting cold sweats, extreme tiredness (or a few days of fatigue) these are all common warning signs and they need to be assessed further....ASAP, preferably by calling an ambulance. At the very least get someone to drive you to hospital (and never drive yourself, if you get rapidly worse or pass out while driving then you risk killing a few other people as well) It's the "waiting a few hours" to see if it goes away, calling people to discuss it (and who will potentially talk you out of it), not wanting to be embarrassed by calling an ambulance if it turns out not to be a heart attack. These are all the things that delay treatment and that women often do more than men. Chest pain is one of the 'big ones' where you really need to get to hospital ASAP for further assessment. If it turns out to be indigestion, gall bladder pain etc, then that's fine. The point is there is NO way to safely distinguish between 'heart' pain and any of the other causes without going to a hospital...so you just have to go, that's exactly what emergency departments are meant to be used for.

This is why it drove me nuts when my doctor AND a cardiologist told me "Oh, you'll know." Apparently even they think all heart attacks are like the ones in the movies. One of them even told me that you can't have a heart attack just sitting around, you have to be active. With misinformation like that from professionals, it's no wonder people don't get things checked.
If I get shoulder, arm, or chest pain, it's usually followed by a hot flash as anxiety kicks in wondering if it's something more. Last weekend I had terrible shoulder, chest, and neck pain, but luckily I knew what I'd done to cause it or I'd have had to consider going in. If I went in every time I had symptoms, I'd be broke.
I'm glad you told your friend and got the help you need. I'm surprised they are waiting so long to operate though. SMH Living with that hanging over your head seems stressfull. Good luck with the surgery and recovery!

Thank you.
I'm calling my doc in the morning to get in. I've had collar bone pain off and on for a week. Googled it.... any pain in shoulder, particularly left, points to heart attack. Of course that sets off the anxiety. Anxiety mimics heart crap. So annoyed. Anyway, I’ve been feeling off the past 2 days. Guess I need to suck it up and go in.
