That was awesome. Thanks for sharing.
It makes me crazy when people who clearly have bigoted views start quoting King and pretending they “don’t see race” or that his legacy supports their misguided notions of color blindness.

I think there is a certain amount of historical amnesia as well as misinformation. The MLK people get at school and via national celebration is generally scrubbed of both the economic justice aspect of his leadership and the crtitiques if white power—you get this cuddly “I dream of a race-blind society” figure, definitely. But the other aspect is that people look back to that period and assume that it was just Big Bad Cartoon Southern Racists, and just a few of them, against a nation united in a quest for civil rights. Instead of realizing that the majority of Americans disapproved of him in his time and thought that he was too demanding and confrontational. Nice people. Most people.
People project back and assume they’d be marching with him. They wouldn’t be. And I too get tired of hearing those very people talk about how MLK is the standard and of course the modern civil rights movement is a bunch of babies or too demanding or whiny or whatever.

Those are amazing, thank you for sharing. This quote really struck me as relevant right now, “We will have to repent in this generation not merely for the hateful words and actions of the bad people but for the appalling silence of the good people.”
I am glad there are so many good people who do speak out, but I wish they outnumbered the ones who don’t.

I love it when people say we should protest like MLK Jr and not do anything like blocking a road because that inconveniences people. Anyhoodle.

These memes touched a place in my soul and make me sad that our world seems to be going backwards in regards to fulfilling Dr. King’s legacy. They also make me personally feel like a failure as I don’t know what I can do to right the wrongs that persist in our society. I am a 60 year old white retired middle class woman living in a very small, mostly white northern community. Other than speak up when I hear racist or bigoted comments I have no idea how I can stop the injustices perpetuated by others. I read Olan ‘s comments and try to understand her perspective. It’s not that I don’t want to change and/or do something. I just don’t know what to do and it makes me feel inadequate. Does this make any sense at all? Does anyone else ever feel this way?

Somehow many have gotten the incorrect idea that non-violent protest = not doing anything illegal. I’m glad to see some reminders that’s not true.

Judy26 I am sorry you feel inadequate and I appreciate you trying to understand my perspective*. Black people are fed up and when I look around me (especially here at 2peas) I don't see many people who are committed to seeing an end to the mistreatment of black bodies. Darcy Collins is in my thread titled "Should America Say Sorry" arguing that the wealth gap has very little to do with slavery. casii You liked this comment as if you did not flake on the tickets I offered you. You inquired and I went out of my way to save them for your family. I even followed up with you via peamail. I had decided to never bring this up but please don't pretend you want to understand my perspective yet when I offer you very hard to come by tickets you can't even be bothered. That isn't fair at all. *My perspective: Racism is pervasive. Enough is enough. Be better people. Start somewhere.

A good practice would be to decide if you're comfortable having your text quoted in a news publication even just using First Name Last Intial...if you and Lucy stand by what you say there isn't another word I need to utter to either of you. This really is a time to be alive so I am careful where I toss my energy. In your liberal washing, please do not forget that MLK was a Southern Baptist minister.
-He was pro-life
-He did not support gay marriage
-He would've marched against DACA. (Illegal immigrants took jobs away from African-Americans.)

And because we may not agree with him 100% on everything we can't point out and agree with some of his thoughts and ideas?

This is so me-today in particular. I am a few years shy of you but today it has been bothering me. What have I done? (to help) Maybe it's these memes I saw and pondered earlier. Maybe because it MLK day. Maybe because 45 has gotten under my skin again. Maybe because I started watching "13th" on Netflix and it's made me aware already that although I lived through some of those times discussed in it, I was never FULLY aware. I feel like I need to wake the f@@k up and do something more. Maybe it's a combination of things but I am feeling inadequate in many ways, too. Sad that I am in my 50s and the same sh!t keeps happening. Sad that there is no end in (immediate) sight. Sad that 45 put us back year, I think. I think I will go finish watching "13th". For what it is worth, I recommend (so far). My DD20 told me it's a "must watch" and I think she may be right.

Not an individual whose mind is likely to change some opinions over the years. I know mine have. You (general) get more information, facts, exposure etc and your mind can ignore and keep same opinion or change and evolve. I certainly can not speak for MLK but considering what he was all about...
