Have them fix it. We bought a brand spankin' new travel trailer this summer and when we did the walk-through/around, there was a blemish that would have bothered me forever. The lot guy thought I was being ridiculous (He didn't say so, but I could tell!), but the salesperson totally understood. It took less than an hour to switch out the blemish part. A side note: I do feel bad that someone else is going to get that blemished part (it was the kitchen faucet and I'm sure they just switched faucets from another trailer), but maybe they won't be bothered by it like I was.

Thank you all for the validation- My husband will back me up, I just wanted to be sure I was not being unreasonable!
The Lemon car is a 2015 Ford Explorer with all the bells and whistles. It truly is a piece of junk and has been a frustrating experience that is sucking the joy out of this new car purchase because I have trust issues now LOL. We are getting a 2018 Toyota Highlander- IF they can get me me without a flaw! Never again will I buy a Ford product!

A brand new car should not have a blemish. Especially if it's noticeable to you. That thing will drive you crazy, I don't care if it is the size of a pinhole. Tell them to find you a different model!

I would have them fix it or walk away from the car. There are way too many cars on the market to get something that is going to drive you crazy for the years you will spend driving it.

I would expect a huge discount or a perfect car, but no I wouldn't take it "as is." I feel you the lemon car. The dealership just bought back SO's POS Alfa Romeo Guilia. That thing was in the shop 39+ days out of the 6 months he had it. The manufacturer gave him all his money back.

A brand new car is a brand new car. If they want to sell you something with a blemish they had better be prepared to offer you a used car price. I also totally get being gun shy about Fords. We had a lemon Ford many years ago. It was so bad, I will never own another one. My husband is a bit different. He doesn't want another Ford but he's totally fine with another Buick even though his last one burst into flames in a parking lot 30 seconds after he got out of it. Don't worry, he's not getting another Buick either. I refuse to let him purchase any vehicle from a brand that's previously tried to kill him.

I bought a new car two years ago and there was a small chip in the paint, visible from the driver's seat. They "fixed" it, but the paint has already worn off AND now there's another chip. FWIW, we recently walked away from a Ford purchase because the certified pre-owned car we just purchased had a bad transmission. I don't know that I'll ever buy a Ford again--it was a horrible experience.

A new car for $42,000 should have no blemish. I would pick a different car. Or I would consider a repair with a BIG discount.

A brand new car should be delivered in perfect condition. I would see a flaw every time I was in the car. OTOH, a used car I would grumble, but would get over it.

I also had a Ford Explorer lemon. It was in the early 2000’s.
New car should be perfect. A blemish in the dash will expand.

I would except the car to be perfect. Have them order one from another dealership or find a car elsewhere. Once you threaten that they'll work w/you.
ETA: That blemish will affect the resale value.

I would have them fix it. I had Honda replace a door handle that was to the back seat because it sounded cheap when I opened the door. For a brand new one it should not sound that way. It bugged me. Because all the other doors did not sound that way I knew it should not either. I do not use it often but it would always bother me. They replaced it no problem.

Am I the only one who wants to know what type of car was in the shop 23 times in 3 years?? Haven’t read The whole thread but my vote is Volkswagen. ETA: not surprised it’s a Ford.

My eye would go straight to it every time I got in the car.
When I got my Jeep, the metal around the hood was damaged in transport. So, they had to fix that before I'd buy it. The letters JEEP go on across the front. They put them on crooked and I made them take it off and redo. Otherwise, it would have driven me nuts knowing they were crooked.
ETA: if they give you crap saying they can't fix the hole, tell them you want a new dashboard put in.
We will never buy a new Cadillac. We had a great one in the 70s. Traded it for one that leaked around the windshield, so we made them take out and replace the windshield and gasket around it. Still leaked. Traded that one for another. We're driving down the interstate and all the bells and whistles go off and it quits. Nice in the outside lane! Had it repaired. Driving it down the road and ding ding, better get pulled off before it dies again. Three more trips to dealership and it never got fixed. With 2000 miles on it we traded. We felt badly for the next person who bought it.

You're the customer, and you don't have to take that car. They can either fix it or find you a different car.

You are not being OCD. Your DH needs to understand that a product that has a sticker price of $42K needs to be perfect, especially being a Toyota. Toyota normally prides themselves on the quality of their cars.
BTW, you are going to LOVE your Highlander. It drives like a champ! I've been driving Toyota's for the past 20 years after being a country girl who wouldn't drive anything but a Chevy. I did a small stint with a Honda, but the maintenance is not truly "bumper-to-bumper" and the dealership was nickle and diming us for things that should have been covered under warranty. I don't have to worry about that with Toyota.
(Hijack - @ the Grammar police - did I get the "prides themselves" right? Plural possessive? I had a crappy middle school English teacher I never recovered from.)

For 42k, it should be perfect.
When I bought a new car in 2009, I noticed after I got it home that they had sliced through the carpet while removing the plastic. They went out of their way to fix it, had a special carpet person come in to seal it back together, no charge to me. They also offered to give me money if I didn't want them to take care of it. That car only cost 15k. For 3x that much, it had better be pristine.

The Highlander is an awesome car. It was on my very short list when hubby worked at the dealer. Now with him still not working, it's just a dream. I told him he needs to go back to work because I will need a new car (I commute 90 miles a day). I am now looking at a RAV4 - seriously I need my Highlander! LOL
