the most sickening part of this ordeal was for the mothers of the girls who were in the room with their daughters when they were being abused by him. he would just position himself so the mom couldn't see what he was doing.
Can you imagine being the mom of those girls?? I would be losing my shit.

I am waiting to see the police report from 2014. Someone filed a FOIA, but they stated they couldn't release until after sentencing. Who exactly vouched for this doctor? I'm trying to actually imagine a scenario where my daughter has a hamstring injury and the doctor's treatment makes her so uncomfortable that she goes to the POLICE and their investigation determination is that it's a medically appropriate procedure and she's just not as comfortable with her body as gymnasts?!?!?!?!?! And people actually thought why yes - it's completely normal that this doctor regularly digitally penetrates gymnasts who don't complain and this woman who thought it odd just doesn't understand doctors. Who exactly did the police interview? And who exactly at MSU who after the police investigation thought - you know we might want to have someone else present when the good doctor does his treatments and called for that policy - but never thought to see that it was enforced. I mean there is some seriously screwed up behavior here and people should be going to JAIL!

My own mother believed my step "father" over my sister and I, it does not surprise me in the least that people dismissed these young women and chose the word of "the good doctor" over them. This is institutionalized misogyny. Just consider the different public outcry over Penn State vs here. I do hope investigations are continuing.
Can you even imagine being the girl who was sat down by her parents, with her abuser, dismissed, and then lectured by the dr and the parents about what real inappropriate behavior was and how she should report that? And she contributes her father's subsequent suicide to his realization that she was telling the truth and he didn't believe her.

her remark that she "just signed (his) death warrant" was unprofessional and if she is lucky, inaccurate. He is in his 50s. The minimum sentence is 40 years. She was stating that he would die in prison, not that he would be killed in prison. I thank you, but I respectfully disagree. I get that he will never get out. Good. I trust that his sorry a$$ will be protected while he is incarcerated. Authorities will probably even protect him against himself, if he was inclined to self harm. The statement was unnecessarily dramatic and inaccurate.

He isn't going to live anywhere else. His sentence is 175 years plus 60 for the child porn charges. He will die in prison. Even if he is killed in prison, he will die there.

I hope that her words don't influence an appeal if there is any! They deserve justice and more!! I'm also happy to see the University taking action as well as the team to look into the coaching an why something wasn't done sooner. I hope he never ever sees the light of day!! It's just maddening and sad. Those girls worked so hard and are so amazing!!

If he had not been incarcerated, he would die outside prison, some way, some day. Excuse my overly invested, legalistic mind and obsession with legal processes and officials, their powers and styles. She did not pass a death sentence or sign a death warrant. She is a respected judge, I respect her and think she did a great job. Then she went a little dramatic, a little reality TV just at the end there and evoked in me the whole Oscar Pistorius nonsense of the last couple of years. ETA: I was typing at the same time as azredhead . I had not even thought about possible ammunition for an appeal!

He pleaded guilty and the sentence was not extraordinary. It’s not going to be ammunition for an appeal.

If I understand it right they won't appeal the conviction but rather the sentence or the amount of time? Don't get me wrong though as I send he deserves to die there.

The judge’s minimum sentence was within the minimum range agreeed to in his plea deal, so I really don’t think there’s much basis for appeal.

An appeal won't change that he will be in prison for the rest of his life.

Entire USA gymnastics board to quit over Nassar scandal. BBCGood, they were not fit for purpose. Shame it had to be an order from the Olympic Committee rather than a decision they came to themselves.

There is so much more to this story than one man molesting countless young athletes. The whole environment of competitive gymnastics (and many other elite sports) is ripe for this kind of abuse. I so completely agree with this. I'm glad they caught this one offender, but the sad thing is that's all he is...just ONE offender. My son is the gymnast, and he's there for 4 hours at a time, at just 9 years old. (Yes, this is his choice, lol.) Can I tell you how happy I am that there is basically nowhere in this gym where you can be behind closed doors? The bathrooms are set off enough for privacy for necessary business, but not super private. The boys' locker room is just lockers in an alcove, no doors (and no changing). The boys practice with shirts on as long as there are girls there training. A student may not text or email a coach unless the parent is copied.
You can never guarantee a safe situation, but you can take lots of measures to help with it. But evil people like this will still find a way. I figure it's like locking the door to your house - you try to take the basic precautions and stay aware, but a bad person can still break in. How sad that people cannot respect the humanity of another person enough to respect them and their bodies. That's how it was with my daughters at dance. Their studio owner corresponds through the parents. Some of her teachers are young women, not much older than some of the girls they teach, but they correspond with the parents. I hope this makes sense they way I am explaining. Your son's gym sounds very well run!

Unfortunately this is a very local story for me (I don’t know him personally or have any knowledge other than what’s been on the news) and some of the local sports talk radio hosts have really been coming up with some interesting punishment options for him. Playing the statements on a loop has been mentioned. Judge Aquilina sure has her plate full with this one. I think she is absolutely the right judge for this case. I am probably in the minority, but I would love this option for many other criminals as well regardless of the crime (from violent criminals to white collar criminals! (hearing victim/victims statements often)
