go by before someone lets you in? Do you think it's regional-- how quickly people show that courtesy 'making a space' for someone?
In the town where I usually drive, it's just one or 2 cars before someone waves me into the stream on the street. Today, it was pretty backed up due to road construction, and everyone was stopped at a light. I figured I'd have to wait for that backjam of cars to go by after the light turned, but the first car let me in.
I'm in Kansas.

I just wait for traffic to clear. We never have a bottleneck really when I'm pulling out.

Exiting a parking lot I don't expect anyone to stop and let me out. I wait for traffic to clear or the light to hold them back.

People should not be stopping to let people in, unless there is a red light directly ahead.
It's not courtesy to stop and let someone who doesn't have the right of way go - it's dangerous and impeding the flow of traffic.
The person needing to pull out just waits until there sufficient space to do so.

I usually let one or two cars out when I can. There is a parking lot that I frequently have trouble getting out of and NO one will let you out, if I waited for the traffic to clear It would take hours to get out. ( I'm usually there at rush hour)
Luckily people sometimes will let you out.
When I lived in Cayman the rule was you stopped and let people out even when it made NO sense to do it... like you are driving down the main road and someone wants to enter from a side street. The fact that you are the ONLY car on the main road doesn't matter. You stop and let them out. Which is important information to have, just incase you happen to be the ONLY other car on the road and are not expecting the car in front of you to stop.

No idea, I have never thought to count cars. I don't really like being let in when it's crowded because it makes for other issues in the traffic stream. I prefer to wait until the backlog passes.

It seems like Katie disappeared from the pea board shortly after I met her in Grand Cayman. If I am stopping at a red light and there is a car waiting to get out of a parking lot, I will usually let them into the stopped traffic. I don't stop while driving down the road though. That's way too dangerous.

Everyone thinks they're being "nice" by stopping to let a car pull out, but give zero thought to the inconvenience you are causing the cars behind you. A car pulling out of a parking lot doesn't have the right of way and should not *expect* anyone to "let" then out.

I'm talking about the red light turns green, and you let someone in front of you before proceeding. Or the light turns RED, and you stop BEFORE the exit from a parking lot, to let the person leave the parking lot and wait for the RED in front of you. It would be odd indeed to stop or slow down severely to let someone in from a parking lot. Guess I didn't make myself clear.

The car in front of me lets someone in, that someone makes the green light, the car in front of my doesn't and stops. I of course am right behind them unable to make my free right turn and have to wait for the entire cycle to go again <sigh> This is the light right up the road on my way home from work every day

No idea. Usually I have to wait until traffic clears. Have to say that drivers on Auckland are not very good about letting people in!

I'm in NJ. I have a street perpendicular to mine that backs up. Usually the first person will let me out to make a turn onto that street.

With rare exceptions where traffic is impossible to enter, I would really prefer the other car to just get out of the way. I have seen more times lately where people create a dangerous situation trying to be courteous.

People here will get very pissy if you don't let them into traffic. I had a situation the other day where a driver wanted to exit a corner gas station on the right side of the road. The light was red and traffic was backed up very far. Not only did he nose in and honk when the light turned green, he then proceeded to cross 4 lanes of traffic in 50 feet so he could turn left. He would have been safer (although more inconvenienced) if he had exited onto the perpendicular street and turned around and came back. It would have probably been just as fast considering how long the lights are.
Traffic is bad here and it can be hard to enter traffic from a parking lot, especially if it's on a frontage road where you have regular lighted traffic and cars exiting from the freeway. It can be a constant flow of traffic.

I have seen more times lately where people create a dangerous situation trying to be courteous. The store I go to most often is like this. I usually just need to come out into the first right lane. But every once in a while I need to get into the left turn lane which is the third lane over and right there. It starts at the same place we come out of the parking lot. So if the right hand car lets me in, instead of letting me come out when all lanes are clear I can't make my turn I've learned to not pull all the way up and only pull up when it looks close to being clear so people don't stop and wave me in. But many people pull out when waved in and then try to cross the lanes leaving their rear blocking the other lanes because they can't get all the way over.

I would never get out of my driveway in the morning if people didn't let me out! I live on a busy main road, with 3 primary schools and 2 high schools leading off it, and between 8.30 and 9 it's nose to tail. I like to return the favour when I can. In our town we don't have many sets of traffic lights, and if you're waiting to join the main road then you can sit for a long time if no-one lets you in. To be honest, I don't give the car behind me a whole lot of thought. It tends to be the custom here to let people join the flow of traffic so no-one gets upset at those who do. (We're more likely to shake our head at those who don't!)

Traffic in some parts of the island is insane and no one wants to let anyone in. I spent 10 minutes trying to leave the parking lot of the craft store. Not one person even attempted to let me in. At one point I was trying to inch my way in to the lane and I was honked at and given the finger. I can tell you, not many people here drive with aloha!

I won't block an intersection or entrance, which my firefighter dad taught me, so if a car wants to risk their life in that space, go for it.

People are pretty good about letting others out of parking lots around here. Rush hour lasts for a couple of hours. The traffic is stopped bumper to bumper throughout that time. No one would ever be able to leave a lot without the courtesy of those already on the road.

I drive from home to work and back across a main thoroughfare running east-west through the county. It's stoplights and intersections the whole way and can be extremely slow at rush hour. I try to leave a little hole if I can see that a car is trying to turn into or across that really heavy traffic - if nobody did that it would be very hard in rush hour traffic to make certain turns. Mostly traffic isn't moving very fast anyway and you probably weren't going to make it through that light before it turned red because there are 18 cars in front of you and they are all stopped, so you might as well cool your jets for an extra second or two and let another person turn safely. If traffic were moving at speed and the light ahead were green, of course you wouldn't stop just to let someone turn. But mostly I just try not to block people if I can help it, either the people behind me or the people trying to turn. I've been driving this same route for a lot of years now and I've just tried to cultivate patience between here and there.
Except if you are sitting there waiting to turn and staring at your cell phone instead of looking at the other cars around you. Then I might not leave you a hole at all because you are not paying any attention and probably would block the whole universe and then I would have to re-cultivate all that ruined patience.

Ha, this is the land of "any lane is a left turn lane". And if that doesn't work, heck, drive on the sidewalk if needed. If you don't push your way out, you will be stuck for hours and others will go around you and cut you off again.

It rained a lot today in Vegas and the city comes to a crawl when that happens. I was backing out of a space (or trying to) in my work parking lot today. It was so backed up and nobody would let me back out. (It was the only way out). About 6-7 cars went by and I just started coming back. I have a back up camera so I can see if someone zips up to try and deny me but I thought if I didn't do that, I would have never gotten out of that spot. Then, there was no way in Haites that I was going to be able to get in the right turn lane to get on the freeway so I had to go straight and go the loooonnnngggg way. People here suck sometimes.
