Do you have an area rug in the room? DH and I are debating this issue.

My whole first floor is hardwood, and I have area rugs in every room. I love them! They add color and warmth, and aren't so expensive that you can't change them out every few years.

Yes in the dining room and no in the family room although I would have one if I had my choice. Right now, it's more convenient to not have a rug in our family room - think crushed goldfish everywhere. Much easier to keep clean without.

We usually put one down in family room in the Fall/Winter and leave it bare in the Spring/Summer. We do have a rug down in the foyer and in the dining area year round.

We have hardwoods throughout our first floor and have area rugs in the formal dining room, master bedroom, entry and living room. One thing is that the floors darken over time except under the rugs.

We have hardwood through all but the kitchen. Each room has an area rug. It helps cut down on the noise in the house.

I have an area rug in my family room, but not in my living room. I like the cleaner look of no rug, but I like the warmth of having the area rug underfoot in the winter.
ETA: If I had room to store it, I would do like lovetodigi and take my rug up in the spring/summer.

We don't have an area rug in the LR. With a golden retriever and a long haired cat, it would be full of hair all the time. I love the look of the wood and wouldn't really want to cover it up, anyway.

I do but if I had my way there would not be one. Then I could just swiffer and not have to haul out the vacuum.
You can call me lazy.

We have one in the parlor. My kids like it with it. I prefer it without. We had an expensive, wool rug from Africa a few years ago and where the fringe was attached to the rug left wear marks on the floor.

We have hard wood floors in our kitchen and dining room. No rug in the dining room.
I would love to have hard wood through out the whole house. I really don't like it in the kitchen but it is what it is. I would do 2 things if I ever get the whole house done. 1. heated floors. 2. area rugs in the living room and around the beds. I don't like rugs under my dining room table because of the chairs. It is hard to scoot out the chairs when you are on them with a rug under you. and the food mess if something is spilled.

We actually have an indoor/outdoor rug in our living room because we have two little kids. I can lay it out in the driveway a couple of times a year and hose it off to clean it. Then I just let it dry and throw it back down. It doesn't look like an indoor/outdoor rug though. It's nice.

No rugs. DH has foot drop (can't lift his foot up so he drags his toes) and area rugs are a tripping hazard for him.

We're military, have always had a lab or lab mix, and have had numerous houses with hardwood in one room or another. Generally, we like to have area rugs. They ground the room and provide warmth and some noise reduction. The exception to this is in the dining area. If you have young kids and a surface that can't simply be wiped up, it's a bio hazard. The one time I did have a rug under the dining room table, I ended up tossing it in less than 2 years. It was a horrible mess and I can't imagine what was all growing in those fibers. A good vacuum will get up the hair, but not spilled milk. And yes, I even had a spot cleaner. Short of cleaning the carpets after every meal, I would be hard pressed to put in carpet or a run under a table.

Nope; always have hard hardwood (though my LR now is laminate) and never had an area rug.

Yes in the living room. It is a large rug that covers the floor area in the fireplace-sofa-loveseat-2 chairs rectangle.
No in the adjacent dining area. Don't like rugs or carpet under the dining table.

We have an area rug under our dining room table, and I have definitely noticed this is true. I do not currently have any rugs in my hallway or living room. My living room isn't furnished to suit my vision yet (really I only just have a couch/loveseat/tv in there), so I have not considered buying a rug just yet, but the fact that floor would change color around any rug we put down is giving me pause from ever doing so. I do love the look of area rugs, though.

I used to have a rug in my family room. Then I got the puppy. It took me longer than it should have to give up on spot cleaning it and just pull the darned rug up. The pup is two now and I still haven't put the rug back. He no longer has potty accidents, but I've grown to like the ease of not having to drag the vacuum in there just for the rug. I still have it rolled up in the garage, but don't really feel like using it. Maybe this winter when its cold I will put it back. My dining room does not have a rug in it.

My entire condo is hardwood other than the master bath. I do have an 8x10 rug in the living room. Also one in the hall just to help break up the space a little. My office is oddly shaped and small, so I've not opted for one in there. My bedroom is very large and I don't want multiple rugs in there (I think that look it too cluttered for me) so I don't have any, and I don't mind it at all. I do wear either socks or slippers in the house 90% of the time.

Do you have an area rug in the room? DH and I are debating this issue. Yes, we do. It helps to "anchor" the furniture. There is not one in the dinning room or office, but there is in my scrap room and master bedroom...for decoration purposes only.

Thanks everyone for your replies. I would like them for the look and warmth. DH, being a real estate agent, is against them. Every listing he has had with hardwood floors and area rugs turns out to be a nightmare when the seller removes the rug.

Our living room is hardwood with a large square of installed carpet in the middle where the furniture sits. (The living rooms hardwood goes throughout the kitchen, foyer, living room and hall to the bedrooms - open floor plan.)

We have hardwood in the living room, dining room and master bedroom. No area rugs. We have cats and the hair/rug thing is a nightmare. I do have an area rug in the entry with the ceramic tile though and the hallway in from the garage which is also ceramic tile. I actually had planned to get a large area rug for the living room after we put the hardwood down, but I haven't yet and I don't think it needs it so will probably not get one now.
