Why do prospective employers say "I will call you in XXX time to let you know", and then never call. Ugh!! It is so frustrating!!! A simple call, say "Hey, we changed our mind and won't be hiring you", or an email or even a text to let you know. It drives me nuts to be strung along like that. I would much rather know that you are NOT going to hire me so I can apply some where else. Okay, vent over. Now I feel just a bit better.

I definitely agree with you. If you have gone through an interview with a company, then they should have the courtesy of letting you know they made their decision and you were not chosen. I don't care what method they use to tell people........phone call, email, snail mail.......whatever method they choose but they should let a person know. This only applies to people that have actually been interviewed. I would not expect a company to contact me if I send in a resume but they never call me for an interview.

My SiL was told in Feb that he'd been "hired" and he'd be told when his start date was. They fiddle faddled around, losing paperwork he had to re-submit, and drug it out till September when they told him he'd be starting in mid October. If he had quit his old job when told he was hired they'd have starved by now!

I get your vent, but I can see both sides too. Our HR department is totally short staffed (on purpose) and we hiring managers cannot tell candidates about their status.
Out of curiosity though, why wouldn't you continue to apply elsewhere (multiple places even) just because you had an interview? Not being snarky, just wondering since when I job hunt I probably have 100 potential job postings in some stage.

And, if you haven't heard from them by that time, by all means, make contact. A simple "check in" email lets them know you are still interested, on the off chance that a decision hasn't in fact been made.

If not then they haven't changed their minds so why would they say so ? I don't really see it as stringing you along, it's probably just something to say to end the interview. Many companies don't call or send letters simply because so many people apply for the same position and they don't have the resources to let everyone know.

If they say they will call, they should call. I think this is exactly what the OP was getting at. Why bother to say you'll call if you know your short staffed or whatever and you will only call the one person you need. It's like a bad dating game.

Many companies don't call or send letters simply because so many people apply for the same position and they don't have the resources to let everyone know. That's BS. If they have the resources to spend the time interviewing you, then they have the resources to fire off an email to each person that was interviewed and not hired to let them know they did not get the job. It could be a generic email that is duplicated for each person they interviewed. This has nothing to do with how many people apply for a position. They didn't interview everyone who applied.

I get your vent, but I can see both sides too. Our HR department is totally short staffed (on purpose) and we hiring managers cannot tell candidates about their status. Purposely short staffed seems completely irresponsible and to me indicates a company that is not interested in their employees, not a place I would want to work.

When I was teaching, I went on so many interviews where I was told, "We'll call you" and I never got a call except for one principal who told me he was interviewing 4 people for 2 positions. I was interviewed on Wednesday, he said he was making his decision by Friday and he'd call me either way. And he actually did. I was a little shocked to receive that call, actually, because I'd heard that line so many times. I realize that after a certain length of time, it is no longer realistic to think you are being considered, but at least send an e-mail or something to say the position has been filled. Surely most places have a generic e-mail address this could be done from. Although I have to say, I don't think my boss really lets people know unless she decides to hire them.

I have job hunted A LOT in the last five years, and am so incredibly frustrated by this process. I was given a lead on a job by a friend. Sent my resume, interviewed, thought it went well. Interviewer said he'd call by the end of that week. Two weeks later, I get a call for a second interview, which, again, I thought went well. I wasn't convinced I was "It" for the job, but would have taken it. Interviewer assured me he'd call by that Friday. By 6 pm there was no call, so I assumed I didn't get the job. Later that night, I saw my friend that had given me the lead in the first place who said she was sorry that they gave the job to the other person who had more experience. While I completely understood their decision, at that point--two interviews in--it was plain rude.

I am still putting in applications. This is the second place that said they would call. The first place I did call back and asked them if I was still being considered for the job. I got the same answer, but said with a rude tone, "We will call and let you know." If they don't want to hire me, that is fine. I understand that others may be more qualified for the job. It just irritates me when they tell you they will call and don't follow through. I just think it is rude.

It's thoughtless behavior. I have to interview and hire people in my job, and I try to be as thoughtful as I can about letting people know they aren't hired. I usually try to give a reason, like 'they went with someone with a little more relevant experience,' when I can and if it's true. I didn't realize that people often don't hear back after job interviews. It used to be that people sent out letters to all the interviewees after a candidate was hired, but like a lot of common courtesies these days (like rsvp-ing on time or ever) that seems to have fallen away.

I interviewed for a job the beginning of July. I was sure I nailed the interview. Never heard from them. At the beginning of august they asked for my references. I haven't heard from them since. I checked online and the position hasn't been filled. I emailed HR and haven't heard anything back...that was over a week ago. It is soon very frustrating!
