Does anyone do their own at home? Do you have a brand of polish you prefer? I have the gelish system but have been using Sally Hansen gel color and I don't dig it. It seems to run to the edge of my nails and pool there. It seems too thin without full coverage. Didn't know if that was normal for gel polish or if it was just because it was Sally Hansen. Need to buy some other brands. Any suggestions? I have a UV light. Stacy

I don't, but I am intrigued by the new ones that say 'no UV light required'. I think it is a Sally brand.

I do and I have tried both Sally Hansen and Sensationail. I'm too impatient to get the Gelish online and it's more expensive than the Sally Hansen and Sensationail, so I buy what's at Target or Rite Aid. Both seem thinner, but then so does the Essie regular polish. It's definitely been a learning curve, but I'm finding I get tired of the color before the manicure starts to really wear, so for me that's a success. With regular polish it's all chipped off and ugly before I'm ready to change it. I go really thin on the coats, build them up and try to be patient and careful (not my strongest suits).
I have the same issue with pooling and I also don't dig it. I do think it may be a function of the gel formula, but I'm not a chemist or an expert so I really am just guessing.
What are your thoughts on the Gelish polish? Is it thicker? I'm about to bite the bullet and make a purchase, but I haven't actually talked to someone doing their own and I'm wondering if it's worth the higher ticket price.

We tried that brand too and weren't happy with it. Just didn't look that great on the nail. Maybe it was the color (peach). I probably won't try it again, I will just stick to the regular polish. But gel nails look beautiful on others!

I have the Gelish system but my nail polish ends up peeling and I can't figure it out, so it sits in my closet

I have the red carpet manicure system you can buy at Ulta. I love it! I pretty much only use their gel polishes and they work great on me. Make sure you don't get close to the cuticle and use thin coats. I've also seen it on groupon.

I always have great results, but I only use the Gelish polish. carblover, I've had a few manicures that have peeled pretty quickly. It has always been times that I have forgotten to "rough up" my nail beds before applying the pHbond and base coat. Every time I remember, my manicure always lasts for at least two weeks.

Try the Gelous nail polish. I purchase it from Sally's. No light needed. I use it as a base, OPI polish (2 coats), another Gelous coat, and a quick drying coat. My polish will last a week solid, sometimes 2, depending on how hard I am on my nails. It is different than the Gelish. I love I can use my regular polish with no light and get a good week, even more. Hope that helps....

Ann I haven't tried the actual Gelish polish but I am happy with their overall system. Think I am going to have to bite the bullet and try one of their colors. I just hate spending the money when I have so many beautiful Zoya regular colors. I need to play more with figuring out how to work the gel and regular together. Stacy

I've been using Gelish now for 3+ years - since Gelish and Shellac were the only brands of gel polish available and you had to use a UV light. I upgraded to a LED light when they became available. I love Gelish, but also like Red Carpet Manicure from Ulta.

I love the SentsationNails. I really don't like color so I only use the clear coat. I do two coats and it last 2 weeks very nicely. It would probably go longer, but I am really hard on my nails and I start picking at it after a while.
I am much better at it than I was at first. Your nails need to be really clean and free of any kind of oils and be sure to use the cleaner that comes with it and do all the steps.
I tried the french manicure - and the white part peeled almost immediately.

Do not like the Sally Hanson system at all. To me, does not work. Probably not gel in traditional sense, but I LOVE perfect formula products from QVC. Only thing that stays on my home mani for two weeks without issue.

I'd like to use a gel, but I've had two gel manicures and they destroyed my nails. In fact I'm still not back to healthy nails after about 2 months. So I'm back to just regular polish.

I use the CND shellac. The gel polishes are a little different texture than the regular polishes. I've found that VERY thin layers work best -- add more color layers to get better coverage. As for the peeling, make sure the nail is clean and dry first. It's better if you don't soak the nail before putting on the polish. Use a base coat and very thin layers of color. Don't try to get complete coverage in one coat. Don't let the polish touch the cuticles. Leave a little space. If you get it on your finger of cuticle, clean it off with remover before you cure it. Get it exactly right before you cure it -- that's one of the nice things about these polishes, you can remove it easily before it's cured. If there's any cured polish on your skin, it will tend to lift up and cause the whole nail to peel. It helps if you "cap" the end of the nail. That means adding polish to the cut edge of the nail. It only takes a little touch, but it helps seal the gel onto the nail better. It's kind of hard to do if the nails are short, but it does help make the manicure last. Also DO NOT peel off the polish to remove it. It will remove the top layer of the nail and cause damage. Follow the instructions with the polish. Some of them you have to rough up the top coat to break the seal before you soak them. I've been doing the at-home gel polishes for several years now. I've got it down pretty well now
