It’s been a whirlwind weekend, that all started with a text and has ended with a my husband and I adding a new addition to our home. (It is normally just the two of us with our two Great Dane girls).
My boss approached my husband Friday about his cousin who needed to get rid of their 4 month old Great Dane puppy ASAP. They were going through some rough medical issues with one of their children, and had gotten a puppy in December but no longer had time for him. They moved him outside into a tiny pen and he was getting little interaction with them. (At least they did give him a heat lamp, because it has been down in the 20s and 30s most night the last two months.) He has also never been to the vet and hasn’t had a single set of vaccines.
So, of course after a few texts and a couple of phone calls between the two of us, we arranged to meet the pup Friday night.
When I saw him, I knew within minutes we would be leaving their house with him. He was so desperate for attention. He loved and jumped all over my husband and I. We sat outside and talked with his owners about an hour and they said he was ours if we wanted him....and that was that. He rode home with his baby head in my lap.
He is such a good boy. He absolutely loves us. He’s made himself right at home, and he has not had the first potty accident in the house. He’s also doing quite well in his crate at night...he cries to potty, but once I bring him back inside and put him back in his crate, he settles down and is asleep within 5 minutes usually.
He has some puppy behavior issues we are working with him on (obsessive puppy mouthing/biting and minor humping). He also has some health issues that we are working with our vet on, due to his owners feeding him Dog Chow, which isn’t appropriate for a Great Dane puppy. He has developed some joint issues that are causing him some pain, but we can hopefully correct it with a better quality food and supplements.
I’m absolutely smitten with this little guy. So everyone, meet out boy Niklaus.
He got to play with his two big sisters last night for the first time (we are easing them into this as they haven’t been around a puppy in a long time). I took this last night after they had their first supervised play session with him. They were completely exhausted. . This is Roxxane (fawn) and Willow (black and white).
If anyone had any puppy advice to help with him chewing on us, I’d love suggestions. Willow is 3 years old and I remember working with her but she wasn’t nearly as persistent and obsessive as he is. I don’t remember having nearly as bad a time...but of course, she wasn’t a neglected 4 month old when we got her, so we may just need time and patience.
ETA: 2/17/2018: Two weeks later.
He is a DOLL. The sweetest little baby boy. He has toned down the biting, mostly thanks to the girls. They are totally teaching him all their tricks. He and Willow are the best of friends. They play together, cuddle together...they are quite a pair. Roxxane is adjusting to puppy life a little slower, but she’s stubborn and sassy, so we expected it. She’s great with him but she doesn’t like when Willow and Niklaus play, but we’re managing that.
He’s so smart and has adjusted to being a house puppy almost too well, lol. We’ve gotten a lot of rain and he does NOT like going outside in the rain. After living outside in a small pen, I can’t blame him there.
Being puppy parents again is exhausting us, but in a good way. I’m so over the moon in love with this little dog.
